Last week, at practice, we talked about how we are at that halfway mark in the season. That point where we can choose to either be complacent and just kind of chill or refocus and make some strong growth as individuals and as a team. Here are some areas where you can refocus that will inevitably help you progress: Sleep - everyone should be sleeping more! Shoot for 8 hours. The best way to do this is take your wake-up time and count it back to see when you should be going to sleep. Then set a goal on working toward that. You might only need to adjust a little, or maybe you have a long way to go. But if you try adding 15-20 minutes more sleep this week, you're body and mind will thank you. And there is no doubt you will see progress from this added recovery time. School Work - one of the most stressful things in your life is school, and that stress is a big drain on your recovery and focus (I know, I give many of you a big chunk of that stress!). You can't get out of school work, but we can all manage it better. A few pro-tips from someone who has been around school for a long time: use the free/work time given to you in class (or study skills classes) (even 10 minutes of work done a the end of a class can add up and give you a lot of free time later); don't procrastinate (putting stuff off is human nature, but it always adds up to more work and stress); use teammates/classmates as resources (have them help tutor you, ask specific teammates who do well to give you extra encouragement). We are doing a grade check this week. To compete at the meets, you must have your grades turned in to Coach Decker by Wednesday (printed off). How good do they need to be? Bare minimum only 1 F; from there we will work on a plan to get them to a much better level. Practice - we hope you find joy in coming to practice, being around your teammates, working hard. But even then, sometimes we slack and take an easy road. We've had some great days with a full team and some poor days where we are missing a lot. Let's refocus on the importance of being at practice. Even if you are dealing with an injury, you should go into the trainers and then come out to practice and be around the team and see if there is anything you can help with. Nutrition - eat just a little better, drink just a little more water. A small improvement in putting in better stuff to your body will yield big benefits in what you get out of it.
That's a bunch, and there is way more. Think of a few ideas of things you can do to refocus yourself and make these next few weeks even better for yourself and the team, and we'll discuss a few of those ideas on Monday.
Ironman Volunteer Opportunity - On May 10th, St. George is hosting its final Ironman. Every year, track has been gone and couldn't help out. But this year, we will be around. And the Ironman Foundation has offered us a very nice grant for helping out. We need athletes, parents, family, and friends to help cover our assigned spots as pointers. This is about the easiest job of all time. Basically throughout the day, you will be at an assigned spot and point participants where to go. We challenged all PV track and field athletes the other day to help participate (we had a record low amount of fundraising this year... and we get it, many of us are tired of asking everyone we know for money, but this is a way that we can actually earn our money and get involved in helping our team) and we expect that we fill these spots. Many spots have 2+ people on them. Get in there and claim those with your friends/family. However, some only have 1 person. Hopefully, we have enough people that we can actually assign multiple volunteers to each spot so you have someone to hang out with throughout the day. We really need people to cover this... PLEASE PLAN ON BEING THERE. Go in now to claim your spots; first come, first serve. Volunteer Sign Ups to claim your spot (we will go do the official sign up in the next week)
MEET RECAP:
JV @ Hurricane - Hey it was windy in Hurricane. Nonetheless, our JV crew continues to improve and impress. Although we have a smaller team, as coaches we have noticed that we have a great core group that is going to build into a very good team in the future years. Like we talked about the other day, don't get caught comparing yourself to others. Rather, each day strive to give your best effort and over time you will see great improvement. A few top results: Porter and Braxton took top 5 in the 110h; Carter was 8th in the 200; Jaxon and Cash took top 8 in the 300h; Jesus and Paul were top 8 in the 400; Joseph, Dustin, and Miles went 1-3 in the 1600 with Nathan also in the top 8, Travion, Austin, Ali'i, and Carson all took top 8 in the LJ; and Zach and Kash took top 8 in the HJ. Hurricane Invite - Hey it was windy in Hurricane. But we did get two relays State Qualified: girls 4x400 and boys 4x800 teams. Despite not throwing out full teams and events, both boys and girls took 3rd showing our strength as a program. A few top results: Ashley 2nd and Jade 4th in the 100; Kwade 6th in the 100 and 5th in the 200; Tori 4th in the 100h; Jade 6th and Elsie 8th in the 400; Avery won the 800 with Vanessa 6th and Sariah 7th; Elliot 4th in the 800; Tevye won the 1600; Mason also won the 1600 with Nate 3rd and Bender 4th; Will was 7th in the 3200; Mailey won the disc and so did Ethan and he also took 2nd with a SB (Season's Best) in the shot put; Brock took 7th in the javelin; Claire was 6th in the long jump and she took 3rd in the high jump; Tori won the high jump; and Zach hit an 8th place tying make in the high jump; The 2025 Performance Chart probably won't change much because everything was wind aided (or hurt), but we'll take a look at it and see if there are any changes.
