***UPDATES***

Performance Chart / State Itinerary

Double Region Champs! Pine View is the Best in the World... not just because we won, but because how our TEAM did it - stepping up and filling in for injuries, competing in a load of events and not complaining, getting out and supporting teammates, and showing up and cheering even if you weren't competing. Very proud of all of you.

Heading into State: there is a lot more uncertainty than ever before about competing at State. If you hit your auto-SQ you are in! Others of you are going to make it by being in the top of non-qualifier marks (that 24, 27, 28, 32 number of qualifiers). And some of you are going to be alternates and may get bumped into the meet up there at state (those who are close should be ready to run; for example, if we have a runner who is number 34 in the 800, which takes 32, they should warm with the team and be ready to roll, then report to the bullpen and see if anyone scratches, and you may get bumped in - we know that isn't super ideal, but it does give you a possibility to compete). We'll know a bit more on Monday after everything is set on Sunday night, then as the week goes on and scratches are made as well. We will be leaving on Thursday at lunch, SO EVERYONE MUST HAVE ALL THEIR SCHOOL STUFF DONE: TESTS TAKEN, ASSIGNMENTS IN, ALL GOOD.

2026 Schedule

General Schedule for the Week:

  •  Distance Crew: PM - Mon-Weds pm - 3:00p (everyone) / AM - on own / this week's workouts
  • Sprint Crews and Jumpers: Mon-Weds - 3:00p  (everyone)
  • Throwers: Mon-Weds - 3:00p (everyone)
Upcoming Events:
Fri-Sat 5/15-16 - State Championships @ BYU (Qualifiers). 7:00a'ish (Fri/Sat). Bus times and itinerary TBA (we will be leaving Thursday after school and returning Saturday after the meet).

Quote of the Week -
"Steph Curry intentionally smiled before shooting clutch free throws. Eliud Kipchoge smiled in the final miles of the marathon. They're sending signals to their brain. They may be nervous or hurting. But it's okay. They enjoy this. It's a challenge. Embrace it."
- Steve Magness
We want to continue the theme we were talking about last week with being able to help your perform your best, especially when you get nervous and the stage gets big. Magness' stories of Curry and Kipchoge (two of the greatest big-game performers of all-time) is backed by science. He says, "researchers found that smiling while running gave a 2.8% boost in efficiency. While other work found that smiling during a stressful task drops heart rate recovery... laughter reduces stress hormones, regulates emotions, and increases blood flow to the prefrontal cortex." When you smile, your brain reads the smile and thinks, "I guess we're not dying." As you prep this week for State, in your visualization, and your workouts, take a little time to smile. Smile about your growth; smile about your opportunities; smile about your teammates; smile about what is to come. And when we compete this weekend, smile some more and enjoy all that you and your TEAM have and will accomplish!

Race Reports -
Region: Congrats again on winning the TEAM double! Second time in 3 years for PV, but it doesn't happen that often. We got a new State Q from Travion in the long jump, and Kiera hit her second All-Time Utah Record this year - this time in the Shot Put, the first girl over 50 feet in Utah history! Overall we hit 23 PRs and 9 Season's Bests. The boys 181 points was a nearly 100 point victory over 2nd place and showed a total team effort: We were led by 1st in the 4x800 and 4x400 and 3rds in the 4x100 and 4x200. Individually, Ethan took 2nd in the disc, 3rd in the jav, and was Region Champ in the shot; Trevor was a 2 time Region Champ winning the 3200 and the 1600; Benji earned a Region Champ in the 800 and took 2nd in the 3200; Mason took 3rd in the 3200 and 2nd in the 1600; Travion was 2nd with his lj; Brock was 2nd in the jav; Brennan took 5th in the 1600 and 6th in the 3200; Paul earned 3rd in the lj and 8th in the hj; Elliot was 4th in the 1600 and 7th in the 800; Ben took 3rd in the 1600; Carter B. was 3rd in the 400; Nate took 7th in both the 3200 and 1600; Porter G. was 5th in the jav; Kyle 5th in the 800; Colby 6th in the lj; Bender 6th in the 400; Carter R. 6th in the 800; Buns 8th in the 3200; Josiah 8th in the 400; and Tyler 8th in the jav. The girls won their 4th straight Region Title by stepping up and supporting each other: Our 4x400 put the icing on the title with a first place finish, and we also got solid points from the 3rd place 4x800 and 4th place 4x200; Kiera was Region Champ in all three throws; Tev took 2nd in the 3200 and 800, and was Region Champ in the 1600; Mailey took 3rd in the shot and 2nd in the disc, Sariah placed 7th in the 800, 5th in the 3200, and 4th in the 1600; Naomi was 5th in the 100 and 3rd in the 200 (setting a PV Freshman record in the process); Elin took 7th in the 3200 and 3rd in the 1600; Nely earned 7th in the javelin and 6th in both the shot and discus; Piper took 6th in the jav; and Mia took 7th in the 300h.
Our combined score of 313 dominated the meet as the 2nd best combined score was 197. Truly a testament to how far our TEAM has come this year and how much you are all willing to come together for each other.

May 4 - 9 Region Week!

It is best to view this info in the "web version". If you are on your phone, scroll to the bottom and click "view web version" to see all info.

We know it's not over, but we want to give a huge thanks for such a great season. It has been a lot of fun, and we are excited to see where we grow from here.

As Region coaches, we have been working on trying to increase the number of entries we have at the Region meet this week. We know this isn't ideal, but we haven't received any official word yet on if this will happen. We are hoping for 8 spots / event. We might get 6. It may stay at 4. And we might not know this until Tuesday night. Yikes... If you might possibly fill into this expanded roster of spots for Region, please keep coming to practice. Although it is hard to plan since we don't know, the one thing we do know for sure is - if you don't come to practice, you won't be participating at Region. So let's see you there Monday and Tuesday. Plus, we want everyone (whether you are competing or not) to come support the team on Wednesday and Thursday at the Region meet at SC.

Quote of the Week -
"The world's best performers feel exactly what you feel before a big moment. The same racing heart, jittery hands, and head full of doubts. Research shows they've trained a different relationship. One founded not on eliminating them or calming down... but on shifting the interpretation."
- Steve Magness
This season (or many seasons for some of you) has been a great journey. And we are excited to see what you can make of it as we head into Region and State! But for many of us that excitement is met with a lot of anxiety about performance. This quote by Steve Magness carries a lot of weight. Most of us probably think that the greats don't feel those same nerves and scaredness that we do before we step onto the line or into the ring. But the reality is they do, research proves it. Research also shows that elites see nerves as a way for the body to get ready for the demands about to put on it. However, non-elites more often interpret nerves as a threat that ends up wrecking their performance (they saw it as a sign that they weren't ready). Even tell yourself (or having someone tell you) to calm down isn't effective - in fact it often backfires. Saying 'calm down" makes us believe that were are doing something wrong and need to get rid of the nervous signals. Instead of calming down, what we should do is check in with the signals, recognize that they are there and that you body is providing those because it is excited for a big moment. So acknowledge you are excited (in fact saying "I'm excited" has been shown to be the #1 approach to helping your body actually get ready to perform well). So, again, acknowledge that you are excited. Next, stand upright and tall, these changes in body posture physically help you prepare and send signals to the mind that you are in control not the nerves. Then smile, joke, and laugh with friends and competitors instead of isolating and shrinking away. Next, acknowledge that it will be hard but you have put in the hard work and are prepared. All these steps help you label the feelings and tame them as you say what you are feeling and experiencing the emotions for what they are there to prepare you for. And finally, go preform to the best of your abilities for the day.
Use these steps to help your perform better in stressful and nervous settings like these last couple meets. Let's have a fun championship season and go take what we (each of us individually and as a TEAM) have earned!

Race Reports -
JV Region: Our JV season finished up with the JV championships on Tuesday. Our team did great and put up a lot of great marks: the boys took 2nd and the girls placed 6, we hit 42 new PRs, 7 Season's Bests, and 1 new State Qualifiers. Our JV medalists included: Porter R 3rd in both hurdles and 5th in the high jump; Ben B 1st 1600; Bender 1st 800; Ali'i 5th 110h and 6th javelin; Carter R 2nd 1600; Carson 2nd 800; Taite 3rd jav; Kyle 3rd 1600; Bennett 4th 300h; Buns 3rd 800; Brennan 4th 1600; Mckay 5th 300h; Nate 4th 800; Colby 5th long jump; Nathan 5th 1600; Joseph 6th 800; Cooper 6th hj; Canyon 7th jav; Natalie 4th jav; Andi 2nd 800; Lyndie 7th in the 1600 and 8th in the 800; and Claire 5th in the 800. Boys took 18th with a 2nd place finish and SCHOOL RECORD from the 4x800 of Trevor, Elliot, Benji, and Mason; Ethan's very solid weekend of 6th in the disc and 7th in the shot; and Mason's 7th place finish in the 800. The girls took 5th with Tevye's 4th in the 800; Mailey's 3rd in the discus; and Kiera's huge weekend of 1st - 1st in the javelin, 1st in the shot put, and 1st in the discus where she first broke her own 4A STATE RECORD, then broke the ALL-TIME STATE RECORD, then ended the meet by demolishing her own new record with another ALL-TIME STATE RECORD. These feats earned her the Field Athlete of the Meet!

Quote of the Week -
"Every breakthrough is a mixture of belief and progress."
- Steve Magness
Maybe only us distance nerds know this, but... one of the greatest human achievements of all-time took place Sunday morning in London - Sebastian Sawe became the first human to run a record-eligible (meaning not aided) sub two-hour marathon (and another guy was only a few seconds behind him and also broke 2:00!). Guys, this really is an unbelievable achievement. But it isn't something that came out of nowhere. And that's what we can learn from this. The great marathoner Eluid Kipchoge said, "No human is limited." And this is so true. Each of us (even here on the Pine View High School Track and Field team) have unlimited potential. Each of us can accomplish so very much... And then together - Wow! Together, we can do it all. Magness continues, "It takes folks daring to see what's possible, surrounding themselves with a quality team and doing the work to give themselves a shot. You've got to bet on yourself in a big way. When asked whether he believed he could run a sub 2-hour marathon before the race, Sawe answered with one word: 'Yes'." Over the last few years, we have been able to witness and be a part of many of the greatest athletic achievements in the history of our school (and even the State). We have surrounded ourselves with an unbelievable team of athletes, coaches, parents, and support; many of you are working day-in and day-out to give yourself the opportunity to do amazing things. The final step is a question: Do you dare to see what is possible? Are you willing to bet on yourself and your teammates in a "big way"? When the answer is "YES!" let's all go do it TOGETHER! Pine View is the BEST IN THE WORLD!

Race Reports -
JV @ Crimson: JV crew continues to show great growth. A lot of PRs and Season's Bests as we head into our last couple meets: Joseph in the 1600, Bender 100, AB 110h and 300h, Carter B. 300h, Mckay 400, Porter G jav, Travion 400, Walker 110h, Matt disc, Cooper 110h and LJ, Ian 800, Raine 200, Porter R. disc, Finn 1600, Carson 800, Ali'i 110h, Josiah 200 and 400, Buns 800, Jeric 800, Charles 200, Addilyn 1600, Mia shot, Lyndie 1600, Julia 100h, Samantha 1600, Kloie 1600, Ella disc, Mia 300h, Katie 800, Rylee 1600, Sydney 1600, Claire 1600, Jada 1600, Jenevieve 100, and Ember 1600. Great job everyone!

Crimson Invite: Very good week for the Varsity as well. The guys won for the third time this season and the girls ended up just one point off first (scoring had a flaw in Sporttrax that makes the scores that are showing off a little). We hit 34 PRs, 12 Season's Bests and a few new qualifiers. A big 800 crew hit their SQ: Avery and Emmalee for the girls, and Benji, Elliot, Kyle, and Ben for the boys. Naomi earned her SQ in the 200. She also helped the girls 4x100 (along with Mia, Payton, and Ashley) get their SQ. And we also had two new School Records: congrats to Tevye on being the first PV girl to go sub 5:00 in the 1600 with her 4:58 victory, and to Kiera on breaking a long-standing javelin record formerly held by Olympian Tiffany Lott.

Utah High School Decathlon: Congrats to Porter R who went up to Viewmont and competed in the Decathlon. This is a huge test of athleticism. And even though he had never competed in a Decathlon (in fact, he had never competed in some of the events like the pole vault and 1500), Porter went up and did awesome and represented PV very well.

Athletes of the Week - Teammates chose Mason, Mailey, and Cooper as Athletes of the Week this past week. Three great examples of hard work and being awesome teammates.

Youth Track - Thanks for everyone's help at the Youth Meet. Many, many comments were made about how ours' is the best of all the kids meets... of course it is. We are Pine View and Pine View is the BEST IN THE WORLD!

Quote of the Week -
"I have so much more respect for the person that will push it. Even if they blow up trying. It's so much more meaningful to push your limits and find where that line is. You don't find that by just sitting around and waiting for someone to take things. You got to go to the front front and make something happen. Most people wait for evidence before they believe in themselves. I just decided to believe in myself first, believe that I would be the best and kind of let the proof come after."
- Tayvon Kitchen
Some of you don't know this guy. He was a high school superstar and this past XC season was the top freshman in the NCAA XC Championships after taking the lead for a time. I love his attitude. How are you going to accomplish amazing things if you don't ever go for it? At this point in the season, each of you have put in the work and are ready to break through. So go take it!

2026 Schedule

We continue to build on our great season. We talked a little last week about where we are sitting as far as Region and State. Our team is really doing well and are in position to accomplish some great things. We did give that challenge to get out a couple more athletes who might make a difference. And we also challenge you to really step up your own commitment and see what you can do to help your team. So stay on top of those grades (or let's get them up right now, so we aren't stressing later); commit to healthy habits in eating, sleep, and mental care (including limiting our phone time); and work on bringing in a positive attitude.

Quote of the Week -
"It's not what happened to you that matters most. It's how you explain it to yourself." - Steve Magness
Obviously, we focus all our quotes and stuff on track and field, but we hope you find ways to implement all this to every aspect of your life. A few of you may go on to be State Champs, compete collegiately, and maybe even do something at the professional level of this sport, but everyone of you will be going through a lot of things in life - and hopefully, something we learn here can resonate with us. So with that in mind, back to the quote... Magness says that the stories we tell ourselves shape how we see the world, how we perform in it, and and we think we are capable of next. This means that when we look at our stories as events of growth and redemption we are more resilient, less depressed, and find more meaning in life. Our brains then use these stories to respond to the next event. So if we see ourselves as competitors, resilient, learning through struggles, and we are optimistic toward the future, we can set ourselves up for more of these thoughts in the future. Think about this as you face pressure (a race, a test) with calm and a positive attitude. Think about this when you are reacting to a disappointing result (a bad race or workout, an injury, a break-up, a bad grade). The experience of stress can be seen as a challenge that can be worked through in a positive way instead of a threat. "Change the story, and you change what you are capable of."

Race Reports -
JV @ Hurr: The JV crew continues to impress. At Hurricane, we had 48 new Personal Records (hey we found the PR Candy Bucket, so PR Candy Bars are coming for a bunch of you!). We also had 3 new Season Records. The boys 2nd and the girls 6th. Some notable achievements: Porter G. with a 1st (jav), 2nd (110 h), 3rd (LJ), and 4th (discus); Ali'i with 3 top 5 finishes; Bennett a 3rd and 4th between the two hurdles; Carson with a sub 5:00 1600 win; 2nd places from Cooper, Jeric, and Liam O. in their events; 3rd places from Will, Zach, and Taite in their events; Ashley ran her first 400 of the year; Katie won the 800; Mia B. 4th in the shot; and Ella 7th in the jav.

Hurricane Invite: With a split squad for the varsity, we hit 18 PRs and 6 SRs at Hurricane. Brennan took 3rd in the 1600; Buns was 6th in the 800; Carson won the Open heat of the 800; Paul 5th in the LJ; Colebin 5th in the 200; Trae 8th in the LJ; Ella took 2nd in the shot with a nice PR putting her in the mix for a State Q; Nely had a nice meet to take 4th in jav and 7th in shot; Mia H. was 4th in the 300h; Julia 5th in the 100h; and Ole took 8th in the HJ.

Arcadia: Some of our teammates headed down to California for the prestigious Arcadia Invite. Our relays did well: the girls 4x800 dropped our SCHOOL RECORD down to 9:22, and the 4x1600 ran another SCHOOL RECORD; the boys Distance Medley Relay set a new SCHOOL RECORD as well. Ashley has a good 100 and 400; our girls DMR and boys 4x800s also ran very well. The biggest stars of the meet were the PV throws crew: Ethan had a tremendous meet. He threw great in the shot, and his disc was tremendous - he threw a 20' PR to win the Rising Stars division, which put him into the Open division which he also won, then advanced to the Invite division and set another new PR (just a foot shy of our school record). Mailey set a huge PR as well in her Discus to win the Open division and earn herself a spot in the Invite section where she once again threw well. Kiera continued the Disc dominance with another SCHOOL RECORD (which would be an new State Record as well if it was thrown in-state) to take 3rd place in the Invite. Then in her Shot she threw well and took 2nd place in the Invite.

Alumni Report - Both Bridger and Jessica ran the Mile for their respective teams at the Weber State meet this week. It's awesome to see our Panther athletes pushing at the next level. As we heard with Coach Thompson's visit this past week, there are a lot of opportunities for you to move into collegiate athletics for those that want to step it up.

Athletes of the Week - Teammates chose Ole, Ben, and Carter B. as Athletes of the Week this past week for their commitment to team, pushing at practice, and improvement in performance.

Youth Track - This Track and Field Skills Camp for 6th-8th graders is designed to help our young athletes learn the skills and basics of a variety of track and field events in a fun and well-coached atmosphere. Skills camp will participate in their own workouts any days of the week from 3:00-4:30p. Spread the word to those who might want to participate.

Quote of the Week -
"Raise the floor. Don't focus on the ceiling. When it comes to performance, our average days matter more than our best." - Steve Magness
This was our message to a lot of you at the meet. Whether it was because you are seeing your performance improve or you feel like you are kind of stuck in a place, understanding the idea that your floor is much more important than your ceiling will really help your performance. Here's an example: An athlete hits a great mark (a PR, a SQ, or even a State Record). The next meet, what does he/she expect? Probably that they will go out and break that mark. But the reality is that that rarely happens. Instead maybe the mark is a bit below the new best (but still good). And the next week maybe they hit a similar "good" mark, but we feel like we are failing. Sometimes we get in our head and get down that we aren't hitting PRs all the time and aren't having great meets. The truth, however, is the exact opposite. You are having good meets; you've just raised the floor on your performance. Now you keep hitting marks that are solid with consistency. And with hard work, confidence, bravery, consistency, good positive thoughts and belief, and the support of teammates and coaches, you are going to hit another breakthrough when the time is right. And when you do that, you'll hit something big... and then raise the floor again for your next breakthrough. Important things to remember when you feel stuck: You are raising the floor and that is setting you up for great things; it is important to keep positive (your thinking affects everything); keep being consistent (use the new floor as a platform for your next big breakthrough); no one expects you to PR every single time (if it was that easy then it wouldn't be a big deal when you do it); surround yourself with teammates, coaches, and family members that support you no matter what you achieve on the track/field (we all love you no matter what you do/don't achieve, because everyone of you is more that just a track time or field mark - you are amazing people who are learning, growing, supporting each other, and working toward becoming your best self).

Race Reports:
JV @ Desert Hills - A very good JV showing this week. We had 66 PRs and an additional 10 Season's Bests. The boys won the meet and the girls took 4th. Some of our notable scorers: Porter G. won the LJ and Jav, Will won the 1600, Carson won the 800, and Mia won the 300h. Something we want to bring up... We have solid turnout to practice by the JV crew in the days before the meet, but the rest of the week is often pretty scarce. We want you at practice. The team needs you at practice. Everything we accomplish as a team is because we are all a team together. Whether you are a state record holder or just trying track for the first time, you are a member of the Pine View Track and Field Team, and we need you around. Please make it your expectation to be at practice every day.
Desert Hills Invite - Panther Track and Field is starting to roll. Both the boys and girls teams won the meet and set some more great marks. We had 42 PRs, 26 Season's Best, and new State Qs: the girls 4x200, Trevor and Mason in the 800, Tevye and Sariah in the 1600, Tevye and Emm in the 400, Ashley in the 100, and Ole in the High Jump. And another huge congrats is in order for Kiera. This week she broke the nearly 35 year State Record in the discus! We are really proud of the progress that everyone is making and the team is making together. When we support each other, when we sacrifice for each other, we accomplish great things together.

Alumni Report - Trey and Bridger ran for UVU up at their home meet. Bridger had a solid 800 and Trey a good 1500. And Colton (competing at the same meet) had a good disc and shot for SUU.

Athletes of the Week - We had a big group to catch up from the last few weeks: Benji, Tev, Elin, Payton W., Liam W., Paul, Jeric, Colby, and Kiera were all recognized for their hard work, great leadership, and being awesome teammates!

Quote of the Week -
"You don't get results by focusing on results. You get results by focusing on the habits and behaviors that produce results." - Habits That Make a Champion
The last couple weeks, we've talked about working through the mindsets that hold us back by keeping us in a safe place rather than pushing through and being brave. This week's thought is about how we can start making progress in our mental preparation that will help us produce better results. Tomorrow in our team meeting, we are going to use some examples and practice the skills talked about in this quote. So I want each of you to think about what are the habits and behaviors that produce results AND what are the things YOU CAN CONTROL about these habits and behaviors.

Race Reports:
PV Invite - A hugely successful meet for PV. We have to give our biggest shout-out to Kiera - her 49-4.25 Shot Put was the 2nd longest throw ever in Utah, and she broke the 4A State Record by 2 feet! The throw also ranks as the 4th best throw in the country right now. It was amazing to watch and a well-earned reward for the hard work and consistency she puts in every day. Great job Kie, so amazing! We also hit a bunch more State Qualifiers: Paul in the Long Jump, Mason in the 3200, both boys and girls 4x800 teams, Jake and Benji in the 1600, Tevye in the 800, and Avery in the 1600. Mailey won the Championship Discus and took 4th in the Championship Shot, the girls 4x800 were Championship champs, of course Kiera was a Championship winner in the shot, Tevye was the Invite winner in the 800, Ethan took 4th in the Shot and Disc for the Championship, Paul was 7th in the Championship LJ, and the girls 4x400 took 7th in the Championship. In all that mix we had 36 PRs and 31 Season's Bests.

Alumni Report - Trey and Bridger had very solid meets for UVU at the Utah Tech meet. Trey set a PR in the 5000 running a 14:32 to take 5th, and Bridger ran a strong 3:57 for the 1500. Also at Utah Tech, Colton hit a big PR in the Shot, taking 8th with a 50-1.75 throw (remember they use a heavier shot in college).

Athletes of the Week - With Spring Break, we didn't honor anyone last week. So we'll double up this week.

Quote of the Week -
"Under-preparation is a coping strategy. It protects your ego. You didn't really try, so you can't really fail...Self-sabotage is everywhere. We get in our own way to protect ourselves from judgement. 'I didn't really train for this race.' 'This job just pays the bills.' 'I didn't actually want it anyway.' When self-worth is on the line, we give ourselves an out. We'd rather not try than try and come up short." - Steve Magness
Continuing on last week's theme, we wanted to talk about what we can do to try and work through the protective excuses we create for ourselves and allow ourselves to really care and to really do awesome at what we care about. So here's a few strategies from Magness: 1) Separate who you are from what you do - the more intertwined your identity and performance, the more failure feels personal. A bad race doesn't make you a bad person. 2) Define success on your terms - focus on outcomes you can control (not winning, but rather effort). 3) Do things you suck at - try stuff that you might not be great at (and probably don't care a lot about) so you practice being okay with not being great at something. Get comfortably being bad at something. 4) Develop perspective - we self-sabotage when our brains are convinced something is life or death. It's not. No one really cares if you lose. The people who matter will still be there. 5) Use the 24 hour rule. Win or lose, you get 24 hours to wallow or celebrate. Then move on. Getting back to doing the thing you love is what actually grounds you. 6) Name it - when you label what is happing you take back control - recognize when you're starting to make excuses, then step back and acknowledge what is happening. Then you can decide if you want to listen to that or not.
The excuses and self-sabotage might be the weather, lack of preparation, or any other of thousands of excuses. But they are all rooted in the same thing - we are afraid to fail. But once we realize our success and/or failure aren't really who we are, we free ourselves to grow and continue reaching out to become a greater person.

Race Reports:
Kanab Invite - We took a crew over to Kanab this past Saturday and the team did great. Boys placed a close 2nd, and the girls were team champions. With 35 athletes, we had 27 PRs and 24 new Season's Bests. Some of our notable PRs: Taite in the javelin, Josiah in the 100 and 400, Mia B. in the javelin, Nely in the shot and jav, Mia H. in the 300 hurdles, Ole in the 200 and 400, Sariah in the 800, Rylee in the 1600, Mailey in the shot and jav (and 100!), and Jada in the 1600.

Athletes of the Week - With Spring Break, we didn't honor anyone last week. So we'll double up this week.

Quote of the Week -
"NBA superstar Victor Wembanyama broke into tears after Spurs' 25 point comeback against the Clippers. The 'too cool' mentality is a dead end. Trying hard is cool. Pushing yourself to get getter is cool. Stepping into the arena is cool. Caring deeply is cool." - Brad Stulberg
In an Instagram post, Stulberg talks about the importance of caring. He continued on saying, "Somewhere along the way it became uncool to care. But this is nonsense. The only people who say it's not cool to care are the people who are hiding their own fear of failure and insecurities." Over the next few weeks, our team is going to talk about the obstacles we place in the way of our own success; and saying that you don't care - or acting too cool - is a huge obstacle (I think especially for high schoolers). In HS one of the most important things in the world is the acceptance of our peers. And like Stulberg said, "somewhere along the way it became uncool to care." So an aura of nonchalantness arose. Interesting though, acting like you don't care is actually a defense mechanism created by our brains to try and protect us from failure. Unfortunately, however, the reality is that what it stops us from the most is success. When we say we don't care, or use any other excuse, we are allowing ourselves an out in case we don't accomplish what we want most. This is something that has evolved in humans for thousands of years for protection and safety. And that's the exact reason we see so few people truly become great. Because to become great, you have to break through generations of evolution - and that is tough! So how do we do that? In this case... actually care! Let yourself care. Work hard. Put a full good effort into the things you care about. And don't allow the protective excuses dwell in your mind. Instead respond quickly and decisively when doubts and protective negative thoughts appear by telling yourself that you do care and that it actually is okay to not reach a goal, yet. That is not failure, its a step on the path of growth toward your ultimate goal.

Race Reports:
JV @ SC - Our JV crew did a great job of getting the season going on Tuesday over at Snow Canyon. We also got our first group of State Qualifiers (SQs) with Emmalee, Trevor, and Mason in the 1600; Avery, Trevor, and Benji in the 3200; Kiera, Mailey, and Ethan in the Shot Put and the Discus. First of many more to come! Athletes of the Week - Congrats to our first Athletes of the Week of the season. Each week some our team leaders will be choosing teammates who exemplify hard word, supporting teammates, and positive attitudes. Last week Hudson Smith (distance), Ben Reed (sprints/jumps), and Nelyana Brinagh (throws) were our PV Track & Field Athletes of the Week. Great job!

May 5 - 10 *UPDATED with IRONMAN info for SATURDAY*

*IRONMAN UPDATE*** Parents please help you athlete be here to this... we need everyone's help. Here's the spreadsheet with info about where you should be. (Here is the pdf with a full description of each location and job.) We sent out an email with info about meeting time and stuff for THIS SATURDAY, but in case you didn't get it, here it is...

Hey {first name},

We are excited to get the Ironman here THIS SATURDAY! My name is Dave Holt, and I'm the Run Pointer Captain.

We've been working hard to make sure we fill all our spots. So thank you so much for volunteering.  Most of you are members of the Pine View HS track team, but we'll also be joined by some other members of the community who are also volunteering (excited to have you with us).

For the High School team: we are going to gather at Hurst Ace Hardware (160 N Bluff St) at 8:30 on Saturday to organize everyone, get our shirts, and get assigned to our spots. PLEASE BE THERE and on time! (and remember that certain roads and routes might be closed off, so plan plenty of time to get there.) We will then scatter to our spots for the day. Please bring plenty of WATER, FOOD for lunch and snacks, sunscreen, and anything else you think you'll need (maybe a lawn chair to sit when you get a chance, clothes appropriate for the weather, etc). You're going to be at your spot pretty much all day, so plan on it.

For our Community Volunteers: if you have the first shift, you can also join us at the same gathering location to get organized and get your shirt. Those who have later shifts, you can just report to the location you signed up for at the appropriate time and we will get your shirt to you then - or if you don't have specific spot, shoot me a text anytime and we'll get one set for you.

If you need anything during the shift, my number is 801-834-8524.

This google doc has a spreadsheet for our shifts (and for the HS team, your location and who you are working with). Please feel free to grab another friend or two and bring them along with you to keep life entertaining. I can't guarantee a shirt for them, but I'll try and steal a few extra!

thanks

-dave

There really haven't been too many weeks better in PV Track and Field history than what we just had. Huge congrats to the entire team on just a great week. We are so proud of our JV athletes who finished up their seasons with great races and events up and JV Region and SUU. Thanks for coming out and being part of this team. Non-Seniors, we hope that you keep coming back with even more passion and knowledge and keep our team growing in the future. Seniors, thanks for everything you've done to make PV Track the amazing program that it is.

That all being said, it isn't all goodbyes and see-you-laters... we have more work to do. This week we head into Region and are really gearing up for State. We will have a team meeting at 3:00p in the PV lecture hall tomorrow to go over Region plans and strategy. Everyone competing at Region (or if you think you might be, or if you are still wanting to come out and be part of the team for the next couple weeks but your racing is done) please be there.

*please note - entries in sporttrax for region are not set (or even real!); entries will be updated Sunday and Monday*

MEET RECAP:
JV Region - Congrats to the boys 4x100 for getting their State Qualifier. We also had some really great results from others: Julia was 4th in the 100h; Porter R. 7th and Josiah 8th in the 110h; Mia 6th in the 300h; Josiah 7th in the 300h; Andi 8th in the 400; Sydney 2nd, Vanessa 3rd, and Dagen 8th in the 800; Benji 1st, Mason 3rd, and Carson 5th in the 800; Sydney 2nd in the 1600; Trevor 2nd in the 1600, Joseph 4th, and Dustin 5th; Kyler 8th in the discus; Isi 5th, Julia 7th, and Mia 8th in the Long Jump; and Porter G. and Cooper tying for 4th in the High Jump. We had a lot of other great PRs and Season's Bests as well. Overall the boys took 2nd and the girls took 3rd - very impressive for our team which isn't nearly as big as most of the other Region teams. Results

SUU Invite - We had a very good meet up at SUU with great weather (until the jav debacle). Kwade took 3rd in the 100 and hit his State Qualifier in the 200. Nick took 5th in the 400. In the 800 Tevye was 3rd, Avery 4th, and Andi 6th. Tevye won the 1600, with Avery 2nd, and Sariah 3rd. Trevor took 2nd in the 1600, Nate took 4th, and Ben finished 8th. Avery won the 3200 and earned her State Qualifier. Nate won the 3200 for the boys. Aspen won the discus and took 8th in the javelin. Claire took 5th in the high jump. Sydney took 3rd in the Steeple. And Coach Jason took 4th in the 1600 and Coach Janz pulled off the rare 1600/200 double win! Results

BYU Invite - 2nd Place team for the ladies... very impressive for 7 girls and only 1 relay! The guys did a great job, too, even with some sickness taking away solid points. Ashley set a new School Record in the 100 to take 4th and Jade place a very strong 7th. Elsie also hit a nice PR in the 100. Tori just missed scoring in the 100h with a 9th place finish, but still ran a very strong time. In the 200, Jade put up an enormous PR with a spectacular time to take 2nd and set a new School Record. Ashley was not far off, breaking her own previous school record and taking 3rd. Emmalee ran a nice PR in the 800 to take 7th and put herself as the #1 seed in 4A. In the boys 800, Bridger just missed his PR and ran his third 1:53 of the season. Kyle, Jake, and Bender all hit PRs. Jake and Elliot hit PRs in the 1600. Kiera set another School Record in the discus with a huge throw in the finals to take 1st. Mailey made finals and took 9th (a big accomplishment for a freshman). Mailey also PRd in the shot, and Kiera took 3rd with a strong set of throws. The boys 4x800 of Kyle, Carter, Elliot, and Jake just missed our school record and took 4th overall. Ashley tied the School Record (from 1993) to take 5th in long jump. Tori hit a season's best high jump to take 3rd. And... a huge shout out to the girls 4x100 of Elsie, Ashley, Tori, and Jade for their tremendous 4x100 to take the win and set a NEW STATE RECORD! 2025 Performance Chart (not quite updated yet... but soon). Results
