Quote of the Week -
"Raise the floor. Don't focus on the ceiling. When it comes to performance, our average days matter more than our best." - Steve Magness
This was our message to a lot of you at the meet. Whether it was because you are seeing your performance improve or you feel like you are kind of stuck in a place, understanding the idea that your floor is much more important than your ceiling will really help your performance. Here's an example: An athlete hits a great mark (a PR, a SQ, or even a State Record). The next meet, what does he/she expect? Probably that they will go out and break that mark. But the reality is that that rarely happens. Instead maybe the mark is a bit below the new best (but still good). And the next week maybe they hit a similar "good" mark, but we feel like we are failing. Sometimes we get in our head and get down that we aren't hitting PRs all the time and aren't having great meets. The truth, however, is the exact opposite. You are having good meets; you've just raised the floor on your performance. Now you keep hitting marks that are solid with consistency. And with hard work, confidence, bravery, consistency, good positive thoughts and belief, and the support of teammates and coaches, you are going to hit another breakthrough when the time is right. And when you do that, you'll hit something big... and then raise the floor again for your next breakthrough. Important things to remember when you feel stuck: You are raising the floor and that is setting you up for great things; it is important to keep positive (your thinking affects everything); keep being consistent (use the new floor as a platform for your next big breakthrough); no one expects you to PR every single time (if it was that easy then it wouldn't be a big deal when you do it); surround yourself with teammates, coaches, and family members that support you no matter what you achieve on the track/field (we all love you no matter what you do/don't achieve, because everyone of you is more that just a track time or field mark - you are amazing people who are learning, growing, supporting each other, and working toward becoming your best self).
Race Reports:
JV @ Desert Hills - A very good JV showing this week. We had 66 PRs and an additional 10 Season's Bests. The boys won the meet and the girls took 4th. Some of our notable scorers: Porter G. won the LJ and Jav, Will won the 1600, Carson won the 800, and Mia won the 300h. Something we want to bring up... We have solid turnout to practice by the JV crew in the days before the meet, but the rest of the week is often pretty scarce. We want you at practice. The team needs you at practice. Everything we accomplish as a team is because we are all a team together. Whether you are a state record holder or just trying track for the first time, you are a member of the Pine View Track and Field Team, and we need you around. Please make it your expectation to be at practice every day.
Desert Hills Invite - Panther Track and Field is starting to roll. Both the boys and girls teams won the meet and set some more great marks. We had 42 PRs, 26 Season's Best, and new State Qs: the girls 4x200, Trevor and Mason in the 800, Tevye and Sariah in the 1600, Tevye and Emm in the 400, Ashley in the 100, and Ole in the High Jump. And another huge congrats is in order for Kiera. This week she broke the nearly 35 year State Record in the discus! We are really proud of the progress that everyone is making and the team is making together. When we support each other, when we sacrifice for each other, we accomplish great things together.
Alumni Report - Trey and Bridger ran for UVU up at their home meet. Bridger had a solid 800 and Trey a good 1500. And Colton (competing at the same meet) had a good disc and shot for SUU.
Athletes of the Week - We had a big group to catch up from the last few weeks: Benji, Tev, Elin, Payton W., Liam W., Paul, Jeric, Colby, and Kiera were all recognized for their hard work, great leadership, and being awesome teammates!
Youth Track - This Track and Field Skills Camp for 6th-8th graders is designed to help our young athletes learn the skills and basics of a variety of track and field events in a fun and well-coached atmosphere. Skills camp will participate in their own workouts any days of the week from 3:00-4:30p. Spread the word to those who might want to participate.
