May 4 - 9 Region Week!

It is best to view this info in the "web version". If you are on your phone, scroll to the bottom and click "view web version" to see all info.

We know it's not over, but we want to give a huge thanks for such a great season. It has been a lot of fun, and we are excited to see where we grow from here.

As Region coaches, we have been working on trying to increase the number of entries we have at the Region meet this week. We know this isn't ideal, but we haven't received any official word yet on if this will happen. We are hoping for 8 spots / event. We might get 6. It may stay at 4. And we might not know this until Tuesday night. Yikes... If you might possibly fill into this expanded roster of spots for Region, please keep coming to practice. Although it is hard to plan since we don't know, the one thing we do know for sure is - if you don't come to practice, you won't be participating at Region. So let's see you there Monday and Tuesday. Plus, we want everyone (whether you are competing or not) to come support the team on Wednesday and Thursday at the Region meet at SC.

Quote of the Week -
"The world's best performers feel exactly what you feel before a big moment. The same racing heart, jittery hands, and head full of doubts. Research shows they've trained a different relationship. One founded not on eliminating them or calming down... but on shifting the interpretation."
- Steve Magness
This season (or many seasons for some of you) has been a great journey. And we are excited to see what you can make of it as we head into Region and State! But for many of us that excitement is met with a lot of anxiety about performance. This quote by Steve Magness carries a lot of weight. Most of us probably think that the greats don't feel those same nerves and scaredness that we do before we step onto the line or into the ring. But the reality is they do, research proves it. Research also shows that elites see nerves as a way for the body to get ready for the demands about to put on it. However, non-elites more often interpret nerves as a threat that ends up wrecking their performance (they saw it as a sign that they weren't ready). Even tell yourself (or having someone tell you) to calm down isn't effective - in fact it often backfires. Saying 'calm down" makes us believe that were are doing something wrong and need to get rid of the nervous signals. Instead of calming down, what we should do is check in with the signals, recognize that they are there and that you body is providing those because it is excited for a big moment. So acknowledge you are excited (in fact saying "I'm excited" has been shown to be the #1 approach to helping your body actually get ready to perform well). So, again, acknowledge that you are excited. Next, stand upright and tall, these changes in body posture physically help you prepare and send signals to the mind that you are in control not the nerves. Then smile, joke, and laugh with friends and competitors instead of isolating and shrinking away. Next, acknowledge that it will be hard but you have put in the hard work and are prepared. All these steps help you label the feelings and tame them as you say what you are feeling and experiencing the emotions for what they are there to prepare you for. And finally, go preform to the best of your abilities for the day.
Use these steps to help your perform better in stressful and nervous settings like these last couple meets. Let's have a fun championship season and go take what we (each of us individually and as a TEAM) have earned!

Race Reports -
JV Region: Our JV season finished up with the JV championships on Tuesday. Our team did great and put up a lot of great marks: the boys took 2nd and the girls placed 6, we hit 42 new PRs, 7 Season's Bests, and 1 new State Qualifiers. Our JV medalists included: Porter R 3rd in both hurdles and 5th in the high jump; Ben B 1st 1600; Bender 1st 800; Ali'i 5th 110h and 6th javelin; Carter R 2nd 1600; Carson 2nd 800; Taite 3rd jav; Kyle 3rd 1600; Bennett 4th 300h; Buns 3rd 800; Brennan 4th 1600; Mckay 5th 300h; Nate 4th 800; Colby 5th long jump; Nathan 5th 1600; Joseph 6th 800; Cooper 6th hj; Canyon 7th jav; Natalie 4th jav; Andi 2nd 800; Lyndie 7th in the 1600 and 8th in the 800; and Claire 5th in the 800. Some of our top marks were PRs from Hunter in the 1600; Bender in the 200; Carter B in the 100 and 200; Mckay in both hurdles; Kyler in the shot and discus; Porter G and Tyler's big jav throws that move them into potential qualifying position; Travion's 100 and 200; Colby 200; Porter R discus; Ali'i both hurdles; Josiah 200; Nely's excellent disc throw; Mia in the 100, 200, and steeple (!); Payton H 100, 200, Naomi 100; Ole 100; Sydney's steeple, and Karissa in the 100.

Boys took 18th with a 2nd place finish and SCHOOL RECORD from the 4x800 of Trevor, Elliot, Benji, and Mason; Ethan's very solid weekend of 6th in the disc and 7th in the shot; and Mason's 7th place finish in the 800. The girls took 5th with Tevye's 4th in the 800; Mailey's 3rd in the discus; and Kiera's huge weekend of 1st - 1st in the javelin, 1st in the shot put, and 1st in the discus where she first broke her own 4A STATE RECORD, then broke the ALL-TIME STATE RECORD, then ended the meet by demolishing her own new record with another ALL-TIME STATE RECORD. These feats earned her the Field Athlete of the Meet!

Quote of the Week -
"Every breakthrough is a mixture of belief and progress."
- Steve Magness
Maybe only us distance nerds know this, but... one of the greatest human achievements of all-time took place Sunday morning in London - Sebastian Sawe became the first human to run a record-eligible (meaning not aided) sub two-hour marathon (and another guy was only a few seconds behind him and also broke 2:00!). Guys, this really is an unbelievable achievement. But it isn't something that came out of nowhere. And that's what we can learn from this. The great marathoner Eluid Kipchoge said, "No human is limited." And this is so true. Each of us (even here on the Pine View High School Track and Field team) have unlimited potential. Each of us can accomplish so very much... And then together - Wow! Together, we can do it all. Magness continues, "It takes folks daring to see what's possible, surrounding themselves with a quality team and doing the work to give themselves a shot. You've got to bet on yourself in a big way. When asked whether he believed he could run a sub 2-hour marathon before the race, Sawe answered with one word: 'Yes'." Over the last few years, we have been able to witness and be a part of many of the greatest athletic achievements in the history of our school (and even the State). We have surrounded ourselves with an unbelievable team of athletes, coaches, parents, and support; many of you are working day-in and day-out to give yourself the opportunity to do amazing things. The final step is a question: Do you dare to see what is possible? Are you willing to bet on yourself and your teammates in a "big way"? When the answer is "YES!" let's all go do it TOGETHER! Pine View is the BEST IN THE WORLD!

Race Reports -
JV @ Crimson: JV crew continues to show great growth. A lot of PRs and Season's Bests as we head into our last couple meets: Joseph in the 1600, Bender 100, AB 110h and 300h, Carter B. 300h, Mckay 400, Porter G jav, Travion 400, Walker 110h, Matt disc, Cooper 110h and LJ, Ian 800, Raine 200, Porter R. disc, Finn 1600, Carson 800, Ali'i 110h, Josiah 200 and 400, Buns 800, Jeric 800, Charles 200, Addilyn 1600, Mia shot, Lyndie 1600, Julia 100h, Samantha 1600, Kloie 1600, Ella disc, Mia 300h, Katie 800, Rylee 1600, Sydney 1600, Claire 1600, Jada 1600, Jenevieve 100, and Ember 1600. Great job everyone!

Crimson Invite: Very good week for the Varsity as well. The guys won for the third time this season and the girls ended up just one point off first (scoring had a flaw in Sporttrax that makes the scores that are showing off a little). We hit 34 PRs, 12 Season's Bests and a few new qualifiers. A big 800 crew hit their SQ: Avery and Emmalee for the girls, and Benji, Elliot, Kyle, and Ben for the boys. Naomi earned her SQ in the 200. She also helped the girls 4x100 (along with Mia, Payton, and Ashley) get their SQ. And we also had two new School Records: congrats to Tevye on being the first PV girl to go sub 5:00 in the 1600 with her 4:58 victory, and to Kiera on breaking a long-standing javelin record formerly held by Olympian Tiffany Lott.

Utah High School Decathlon: Congrats to Porter R who went up to Viewmont and competed in the Decathlon. This is a huge test of athleticism. And even though he had never competed in a Decathlon (in fact, he had never competed in some of the events like the pole vault and 1500), Porter went up and did awesome and represented PV very well.

Athletes of the Week - Teammates chose Mason, Mailey, and Cooper as Athletes of the Week this past week. Three great examples of hard work and being awesome teammates.

Youth Track - Thanks for everyone's help at the Youth Meet. Many, many comments were made about how ours' is the best of all the kids meets... of course it is. We are Pine View and Pine View is the BEST IN THE WORLD!

Quote of the Week -
"I have so much more respect for the person that will push it. Even if they blow up trying. It's so much more meaningful to push your limits and find where that line is. You don't find that by just sitting around and waiting for someone to take things. You got to go to the front front and make something happen. Most people wait for evidence before they believe in themselves. I just decided to believe in myself first, believe that I would be the best and kind of let the proof come after."
- Tayvon Kitchen
Some of you don't know this guy. He was a high school superstar and this past XC season was the top freshman in the NCAA XC Championships after taking the lead for a time. I love his attitude. How are you going to accomplish amazing things if you don't ever go for it? At this point in the season, each of you have put in the work and are ready to break through. So go take it!

Race Reports -

2026 Schedule

We continue to build on our great season. We talked a little last week about where we are sitting as far as Region and State. Our team is really doing well and are in position to accomplish some great things. We did give that challenge to get out a couple more athletes who might make a difference. And we also challenge you to really step up your own commitment and see what you can do to help your team. So stay on top of those grades (or let's get them up right now, so we aren't stressing later); commit to healthy habits in eating, sleep, and mental care (including limiting our phone time); and work on bringing in a positive attitude.

Quote of the Week -
"It's not what happened to you that matters most. It's how you explain it to yourself." - Steve Magness
Obviously, we focus all our quotes and stuff on track and field, but we hope you find ways to implement all this to every aspect of your life. A few of you may go on to be State Champs, compete collegiately, and maybe even do something at the professional level of this sport, but everyone of you will be going through a lot of things in life - and hopefully, something we learn here can resonate with us. So with that in mind, back to the quote... Magness says that the stories we tell ourselves shape how we see the world, how we perform in it, and and we think we are capable of next. This means that when we look at our stories as events of growth and redemption we are more resilient, less depressed, and find more meaning in life. Our brains then use these stories to respond to the next event. So if we see ourselves as competitors, resilient, learning through struggles, and we are optimistic toward the future, we can set ourselves up for more of these thoughts in the future. Think about this as you face pressure (a race, a test) with calm and a positive attitude. Think about this when you are reacting to a disappointing result (a bad race or workout, an injury, a break-up, a bad grade). The experience of stress can be seen as a challenge that can be worked through in a positive way instead of a threat. "Change the story, and you change what you are capable of."

Race Reports -
JV @ Hurr: The JV crew continues to impress. At Hurricane, we had 48 new Personal Records (hey we found the PR Candy Bucket, so PR Candy Bars are coming for a bunch of you!). We also had 3 new Season Records. The boys 2nd and the girls 6th. Some notable achievements: Porter G. with a 1st (jav), 2nd (110 h), 3rd (LJ), and 4th (discus); Ali'i with 3 top 5 finishes; Bennett a 3rd and 4th between the two hurdles; Carson with a sub 5:00 1600 win; 2nd places from Cooper, Jeric, and Liam O. in their events; 3rd places from Will, Zach, and Taite in their events; Ashley ran her first 400 of the year; Katie won the 800; Mia B. 4th in the shot; and Ella 7th in the jav.

Hurricane Invite: With a split squad for the varsity, we hit 18 PRs and 6 SRs at Hurricane. Brennan took 3rd in the 1600; Buns was 6th in the 800; Carson won the Open heat of the 800; Paul 5th in the LJ; Colebin 5th in the 200; Trae 8th in the LJ; Ella took 2nd in the shot with a nice PR putting her in the mix for a State Q; Nely had a nice meet to take 4th in jav and 7th in shot; Mia H. was 4th in the 300h; Julia 5th in the 100h; and Ole took 8th in the HJ.

Arcadia: Some of our teammates headed down to California for the prestigious Arcadia Invite. Our relays did well: the girls 4x800 dropped our SCHOOL RECORD down to 9:22, and the 4x1600 ran another SCHOOL RECORD; the boys Distance Medley Relay set a new SCHOOL RECORD as well. Ashley has a good 100 and 400; our girls DMR and boys 4x800s also ran very well. The biggest stars of the meet were the PV throws crew: Ethan had a tremendous meet. He threw great in the shot, and his disc was tremendous - he threw a 20' PR to win the Rising Stars division, which put him into the Open division which he also won, then advanced to the Invite division and set another new PR (just a foot shy of our school record). Mailey set a huge PR as well in her Discus to win the Open division and earn herself a spot in the Invite section where she once again threw well. Kiera continued the Disc dominance with another SCHOOL RECORD (which would be an new State Record as well if it was thrown in-state) to take 3rd place in the Invite. Then in her Shot she threw well and took 2nd place in the Invite.

Alumni Report - Both Bridger and Jessica ran the Mile for their respective teams at the Weber State meet this week. It's awesome to see our Panther athletes pushing at the next level. As we heard with Coach Thompson's visit this past week, there are a lot of opportunities for you to move into collegiate athletics for those that want to step it up.

Athletes of the Week - Teammates chose Ole, Ben, and Carter B. as Athletes of the Week this past week for their commitment to team, pushing at practice, and improvement in performance.

Youth Track - This Track and Field Skills Camp for 6th-8th graders is designed to help our young athletes learn the skills and basics of a variety of track and field events in a fun and well-coached atmosphere. Skills camp will participate in their own workouts any days of the week from 3:00-4:30p. Spread the word to those who might want to participate.

Quote of the Week -
"One the greatest competitive advantages is having fun." - Brad Stulberg
Society often romanticizes the athlete that is ultra-competitive, the athlete that is fueled by anger and resentment. Why? It creates a great story - "Athlete A never sleeps, never goes out, never smiles... he just works out driven by a desire to become the greatest and crush his competition." Now, sometimes you do have to flip the switch and really get after it. Nonetheless, Stulberg tells us, "...the truth is that if you're not having fun, you aren't going to last long at whatever it is you do, and you certainly won't get the best out of yourself. Not every day has to be great, but you've got to learn to find joy in the totality of the journey. There's this foolish misnomer that you either have to be full of intensity or full of joy. But that's nonsense. Joy and intensity, struggle and fun, can coexist, and in the best performers, they ... always do."

Alumni Report - Trey ran the 10,000 on the track for the first time and said he had a great learning experience running the 25 laps in 30:55. Colton took 8th in the Shot for SUU at the UNLV meet throwing 48'

Quote of the Week -
"Raise the floor. Don't focus on the ceiling. When it comes to performance, our average days matter more than our best." - Steve Magness
This was our message to a lot of you at the meet. Whether it was because you are seeing your performance improve or you feel like you are kind of stuck in a place, understanding the idea that your floor is much more important than your ceiling will really help your performance. Here's an example: An athlete hits a great mark (a PR, a SQ, or even a State Record). The next meet, what does he/she expect? Probably that they will go out and break that mark. But the reality is that that rarely happens. Instead maybe the mark is a bit below the new best (but still good). And the next week maybe they hit a similar "good" mark, but we feel like we are failing. Sometimes we get in our head and get down that we aren't hitting PRs all the time and aren't having great meets. The truth, however, is the exact opposite. You are having good meets; you've just raised the floor on your performance. Now you keep hitting marks that are solid with consistency. And with hard work, confidence, bravery, consistency, good positive thoughts and belief, and the support of teammates and coaches, you are going to hit another breakthrough when the time is right. And when you do that, you'll hit something big... and then raise the floor again for your next breakthrough. Important things to remember when you feel stuck: You are raising the floor and that is setting you up for great things; it is important to keep positive (your thinking affects everything); keep being consistent (use the new floor as a platform for your next big breakthrough); no one expects you to PR every single time (if it was that easy then it wouldn't be a big deal when you do it); surround yourself with teammates, coaches, and family members that support you no matter what you achieve on the track/field (we all love you no matter what you do/don't achieve, because everyone of you is more that just a track time or field mark - you are amazing people who are learning, growing, supporting each other, and working toward becoming your best self).

Race Reports:
JV @ Desert Hills - A very good JV showing this week. We had 66 PRs and an additional 10 Season's Bests. The boys won the meet and the girls took 4th. Some of our notable scorers: Porter G. won the LJ and Jav, Will won the 1600, Carson won the 800, and Mia won the 300h. Something we want to bring up... We have solid turnout to practice by the JV crew in the days before the meet, but the rest of the week is often pretty scarce. We want you at practice. The team needs you at practice. Everything we accomplish as a team is because we are all a team together. Whether you are a state record holder or just trying track for the first time, you are a member of the Pine View Track and Field Team, and we need you around. Please make it your expectation to be at practice every day.
Desert Hills Invite - Panther Track and Field is starting to roll. Both the boys and girls teams won the meet and set some more great marks. We had 42 PRs, 26 Season's Best, and new State Qs: the girls 4x200, Trevor and Mason in the 800, Tevye and Sariah in the 1600, Tevye and Emm in the 400, Ashley in the 100, and Ole in the High Jump. And another huge congrats is in order for Kiera. This week she broke the nearly 35 year State Record in the discus! We are really proud of the progress that everyone is making and the team is making together. When we support each other, when we sacrifice for each other, we accomplish great things together.

Alumni Report - Trey and Bridger ran for UVU up at their home meet. Bridger had a solid 800 and Trey a good 1500. And Colton (competing at the same meet) had a good disc and shot for SUU.

Athletes of the Week - We had a big group to catch up from the last few weeks: Benji, Tev, Elin, Payton W., Liam W., Paul, Jeric, Colby, and Kiera were all recognized for their hard work, great leadership, and being awesome teammates!

Quote of the Week -
"You don't get results by focusing on results. You get results by focusing on the habits and behaviors that produce results." - Habits That Make a Champion
The last couple weeks, we've talked about working through the mindsets that hold us back by keeping us in a safe place rather than pushing through and being brave. This week's thought is about how we can start making progress in our mental preparation that will help us produce better results. Tomorrow in our team meeting, we are going to use some examples and practice the skills talked about in this quote. So I want each of you to think about what are the habits and behaviors that produce results AND what are the things YOU CAN CONTROL about these habits and behaviors.

Race Reports:
PV Invite - A hugely successful meet for PV. We have to give our biggest shout-out to Kiera - her 49-4.25 Shot Put was the 2nd longest throw ever in Utah, and she broke the 4A State Record by 2 feet! The throw also ranks as the 4th best throw in the country right now. It was amazing to watch and a well-earned reward for the hard work and consistency she puts in every day. Great job Kie, so amazing! We also hit a bunch more State Qualifiers: Paul in the Long Jump, Mason in the 3200, both boys and girls 4x800 teams, Jake and Benji in the 1600, Tevye in the 800, and Avery in the 1600. Mailey won the Championship Discus and took 4th in the Championship Shot, the girls 4x800 were Championship champs, of course Kiera was a Championship winner in the shot, Tevye was the Invite winner in the 800, Ethan took 4th in the Shot and Disc for the Championship, Paul was 7th in the Championship LJ, and the girls 4x400 took 7th in the Championship. In all that mix we had 36 PRs and 31 Season's Bests.

Alumni Report - Trey and Bridger had very solid meets for UVU at the Utah Tech meet. Trey set a PR in the 5000 running a 14:32 to take 5th, and Bridger ran a strong 3:57 for the 1500. Also at Utah Tech, Colton hit a big PR in the Shot, taking 8th with a 50-1.75 throw (remember they use a heavier shot in college).

Athletes of the Week - With Spring Break, we didn't honor anyone last week. So we'll double up this week.
