Weeks of Dec. 17 - Jan. 6

Things are starting to come together for another great Panther track season!


  • Distance Runners -  On December 17 the distance runners will begin winter training.  Practice starts at 3:00p down at the track.  The focus of these few days before the Christmas break is to get you moving again and committed to running daily during the break.  It is very important that the distance runners show up to practice before the break and then run during the break.  Your workouts have been uploaded on to your Final Surge accounts (workouts can also be found here on the blog).  Use your Final Surge to keep track of your running over the break.  Those who don't record your workouts (either because you didn't run or just don't update your Final Surge) will begin workouts back at Week 1 in January when we come back from the break.
  • Sprints and Field events - Your workouts will begin when we get back from the break.
An info packet with winter track info, spring schedule, fundraiser info, etc. will be available to pic up in Coach Holt's room at the HS or in Coach Decker's room at the MS.

Over the break, we encourage everyone to use this HIIT workout twice a week to work on strength and fitness as we start working into the season.

A great thought to get us going and moving into the break.  In April and May everyone is going to want to travel to Varsity meets in Salt Lake, everyone is going to be trying to hit Herriman and State Qualifiers, everyone is going to want to run Varsity at Region.  But its a pretty safe bet, that the thing that separates those who accomplish these goals from those who don't will be the habits and the skills developed over the next few weeks when it seems like their is no urgency and it doesn't matter if I get my run in and my other workouts done or not...

State Week and Region Recap

Well... we've finally made it to the end.  It has been an amazing season and we look forward to great things from our State Qualifiers this week up at BYU.  We'll have one more post next week to finalize our season, but for now let's recap Region.
Region 9 Championships - A huge thanks to all those athletes and parents who came out to help run the meet.  It was a little hectic trying to host over at another school (and maybe a bit more disorganized than we would have normally been), but things went smoothly and it was a good Region meet.  The girls team had their best meet of the season and really pulled together to place a strong third.  The boys team started very strong, but then missed a few opportunities with injuries and missing finals and slipped down to fifth in a very tightly packed finish from 2nd to 5th.  Nonetheless, it was a solid Region finish to a very good season.  Here's a list of all our top 8 finishers from Region: In the girls 3200 - Jessica 3rd, Rylee 6th, Ellie 7th; Boys 3200 - Nathan 5th, Scottie 6th, Mikey 8th; Girls 800 - Alli Region Champion!, Jacey 3rd and a State Qualifier, Caroline 8th; Boys 800 - Logan 3rd and a State Qualifier; Evan 5th; Girls Medley 6th; Boys Medley 7th; Girls 1600 - Jessica 6th, Jada 7th; Boys 1600 - Alex 2nd and a State Qualifier; Boys 110h - Jake 4th, James 7th; Boys 100 - Samson 7th; Boys 4x100 5th; Girls 400 - Alli 4th; Boys 400 - Samson 3rd, Macen 7th; Boys 300h - Jake 2nd, James 7th; Boys 200 - Samson 6th; Girls 4x400 4th and a State Qualifier; Boys 4x400 6th; Girls Long Jump -Teulia 5th; Girls Shot - Gina 6th; Girls Jav - Celeste 1st, Brynlee 6th, Demri 8th; Boys High Jump - Jakobe 8th; Boys Long Jump - Colin 3rd and a State Qualifier; Boys Shot - Raymond 7th; Boys Jav - Dylan 5th; and Girls High Jump - Claire 5th.

This Week's Schedule:
Monday - regular practice schedule.  Those participating at State, alternates, and just anyone who wants to still work out with the team, just meet out at the track at 3:00 (no team meeting).  Also, all 8th-11th graders: physicals for next year at the HS starting at 5:30.  Pay at the HS Finance Office and bring pre-physical and consent for filled out and signed by parent!
Tuesday - regular practice schedule.
Wednesday - Bus will leave the HS after lunch for State - an itinerary will be sent home to those traveling with the team.
Thursday and Friday - Utah 4A State Championships at BYU.  Schedule

XC Runners - Please get physical and registermyathlete done for next season now!  Also please get a captain recommendation form from Coach Roberts and have it filled out and returned by Wednesday morning!

Thought of the Week: "The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more." - Jonas Salk.  This quote makes us think of our track season in many ways: 1) those who have the opportunity to compete at State this week - you have done amazing things this year; let's go do a bit more! 2) everyone who has completed this season with our team - hopefully you have done everything within your power to have improved yourself as much as possible, and because of this, you have opened more doors for yourself and others around you to continue to do great things in all aspects of your life.
And as we get toward the end, just a cheesy sentimental thought from some old people to you young people... Thanks for all you have done.  You truly are an inspiration to us and all those around you.  I for one, leave each season very confident that this world is going to be a good place because I get to see our future leaders developing strengths and passions that are going push us all in the right direction.  So remember... stand up for that which is right; be kind to everyone around you; and true joy comes not from material things, rather from the moments that you get to share with those whom you love.  Our Seniors... please keep in contact with us and go do great things!

Week of May 7 - 12 and JV Region & Herriman Recaps

It is truly unbelievable that we are at this point in the season.  It has been a great journey and has gone so quickly.  We hope that you have found something amazing and a lot of joy as well.  This week we have Region and we wish the best of luck to all our athletes who are participating.  Before we get into all that, here's a recap of the last week:
JV Region at Canyon View:  It wasn't a great day weather-wise, but we still had many of our athletes go out and do their best this past week at JV Region.  Through the sleet and rain, Allison Brown set a PR in the 1600.  Harrison and Cody both PR'ed in the LJ.  Tanner PR'ed in the 3200.  Carter PR'ed in the 1600.  Jaron PR'ed in the 300h while placing 2nd and took 4th in the 110h. Madeline PR'ed in the 1600.  And Sarah S. PR'ed and won the 3200.  Carson, Tavin, and Jose all scored points in the 1600.  Kathy medaled in the 400.  Tavin, Boston, and Grant all placed top 8 in the 800.  Sarah L. finished 6th in the 300h.  And James and Tanner placed in the top 8 in the 3200.

Herriman Twilight Invite: We also had many great marks at Herriman on Friday evening.  Jake improved on his State Q in the 110h.  Jacey earned her State Qualifier while placing 5th in the 1600 and Jessica placed 7th.  Alli improved on her 400 State Q and placed 2nd in the 400.  Samson also placed 2nd in the 400 (where was also saw great races from Macen and Colin).  Jake also improved his SQ in the 300h while placing 4th and is now one of only 8 guys in Utah to break 40 in the event.  Jada ran a very strong 800 and took 4th and earned her State Qualifier.  Caroline placed 8th in the event.  Alex (1st), Logan (6th), and Evan (8th) all hit a SB or PR in the 800 and Alex's raced earned him a State Qualifier.  Samson came out of the 2nd heat to PR, improve his SQ, and place 6th in the 200.  And finally, Gracie had a nice PR in the 3200 to earn 4th and she was followed in by Ellie who placed 5th.

Schedule for the Week:
Monday - regular practice schedule with a team meeting in the PVHS lecture hall.  We need everyone at the team meeting (even if you are done racing for the season - we will discuss help at Region as well as finalize events for Region... we will have open spots in some events that JV athletes can fill in!). There is also the party Monday evening to discuss.  (Distance runners check your schedule, it is a little different)
Tuesday - regular practice schedule.
Wednesday & Thursday - Region at Dixie.  Because of our track condition (especially our LJ runway) Region has been moved to Dixie.  We will still have a lot to do and we want everyone there to support our team, so please plan on coming.  MS'ers will need to catch the first bus over to the HS after school and quickly get out front where the HS'ers will be waiting to get on the bus over to Dixie.  We really, really want everyone to be there and staying throughout the meet to help support and cheer on our teammates!  Schedule for Region can be found at the top of this link - Parents and athletes please note... this schedule will have more spacing than a usual meet, that is to help our athletes have time to recover in between events as best as possible.
Friday - regular practice schedule (and dungeon clean up - we need everyone there to help with this, please)
Saturday - distance crew will have a team workout for those advancing to State

NOTE TO ALL ATHLETES AND PARENTS: Thanks so much for an amazing year.  This is going to be a watershed year for our program.  In years to come, we will look back at this season and remember all the great things that took place as a time our program really moved in an important direction.  There have been so many wonderful memories made.  We appreciate our Seniors so much for all they have done and will miss them so much!  Thanks again.

As we come to the end of the season, we hope that you will look back fondly on much of what has happened - even realizing that the difficult times were part of a greater journey.  And as you move on to the next part of your journey, whatever it may be, strive to find pleasure and joy in all that you do.

Week of April 30 - May 5 and Cedar Invite & Tiger Trials

We want to thank all of you (athletes and parents) for all that you have each done to make this such a great year.  It really has been one of the most memorable we have ever had.  Great kids, great attitudes, great effort, great performances, and on and on.  Thanks again.  This week will see the end of our JV season (except those competing at Varsity Region), our final Youth meet, as well as our trip to Herriman.

Here's a little recap of the last week:
Cedar Invite: About 1/2 the team headed to Cedar this weekend for the Cedar Invite.  PR's were tough to come by in the very windy conditions.  Some highlights were Brizbin's PR in the Shot and SB in the disc; Cooper and Tanner PR'ing in the 3200; Josh H., Preston, Teuila and Maddy PR'ing and Kobe's SB in the LJ; Boston's PR in the 400; Doug's and Makana's PR's in the jav;  Carter's PR in the 1600; and Sarah's PR in the 100.  Also, Gracie, Jenna, Pyper and Jenessa all placed in the top 8 in the 3200.

Orem Invite: The other 1/2 of the team went up north to Orem for the Tiger Trials.  For a smaller squad, we had a great showing.  Alli started us off with a 5th place finish in the 1600.  Jake State Qualified breaking 16 for the first time in his 110's and took 2nd in the 300's.  Dylan set a new PR for a 2nd place finish in the jav.  Celeste also set a big new PR in the jav for the win.  The girls medley relay of NeNe, Kathya, Alli, and Jacey won and got the State Qualifier.  Raymond put a great shot and took 5th.  Nick had a tremendous PR in the disc to take 2nd and State Qualify. And the boys 4x400 fought the wind to get a State Qualifier.

Monday - regular practice schedule with a team meeting in the PVHS lecture hall.  (Distance runners check your schedule, it is a little different)
Tuesday - JV Region at CVHS.  HS out at 1:00 and MS out at 1:10.  Everyone needs to see the important info below, but for those not competing at Varsity Region or Herriman, this is your final meet of the season.  Let's get out there and end the season on a fantastic note! Schedule of events.
Wednesday - regular practice and our final Youth Meet (please plan on staying and helping). 
Thursday  - regular practice schedule.
Friday & Saturday - Herriman Invite at HHS.  Here is a link to the schedule.  (Note the entry for for spectators.)  This is a Varsity meet where we will only take invited qualifiers.  Bus/Release Schedule: Everyone traveling with the team will be excused all Friday.  We will leave from the HS at 8:15a.  The meet is on Friday and then we will stay overnight and head home Saturday morning.  A full itinerary will be sent home with the athletes who are invited to make the trip early in the week.

NOTE TO ALL ATHLETES AND PARENTS: As your season comes to an end (either with JV Region or Herriman) we still need all of your help.  First, we need your help at the Youth Meet on Wednesday.  Secondly, AND SO IMPORTANT, we need your help at Region on May 9th and 10th.  All PV Track and Field athletes are expected to attend and help at the Region Championships.  We would love you to continue to practice with the team until then if you would like, or not.  But we need you to attend Region and help staff the meet (The staffing assignments will be made at next week's Monday afternoon team meeting - everyone please plan on attending).  Thirdly, we will have a team ice cream party and awards night after Region and want everyone to attend.  More info will be coming out about that.

You know... everyone can start something.  It takes a very special person to actually finish it.  Let's finish this season well, and let's all take the lessons we have learned from this season and put them into our lives and keep striving to be the very best person each of us can be.

A little XC Info - For those interested in XC next fall, we will have a MANDATORY PARENT/ATHLETE MEETING Thursday, May 3rd, at 7:00pm in the Lecture Hall at PVHS.  It is very important that a parent and the athlete attend.  We will discuss many important things for the upcoming season.  This is for all incoming 9th-12th graders.  Please spread the word. (We will also be looking for XC athletes who can go down to the middle school to help recruit on Tuesday? morning, so check your schedule).

Week of April 23 - 28 and Hurricane JV & Dixie Invite Recap

We are getting near the end... can you believe it?  The progress we have seen from most of you has been a lot of fun to be a part of.  Let's make these last few weeks great.  This week we will split our squad between the Cedar Invite on Fri-Sat and the Orem Invite on Sat. (info below).

Hurricane JV: We had a very strong showing at the JV meet in Hurricane this past week.  Both the boys and girls teams placed 2nd with many scoring finishers and new PR's (in fact we had over 70 new PR's set at Hurricane!).  We had so many, it would take pages to mention them all... so take a look at the full results here and find a teammate to congratulate on a great meet.

Dixie Invite: Great job to all those who participated at the Dixie Invite.  Full results are here.  We had many great performances.  Celeste won the jav with a new PR and the #2 mark in Utah this year at 124'.  Samson made finals in 3 events culminating in a new PR in the 400.  Jessica hit a State Qualifier in the 3200.  We had 3 guys in the finals of the LJ (Michael, Colin, and Dallin).  And we got to watch Alli set two new school records with a 5:06 in the 1600 and 2:15 in the 800!  And mixed in there were many other PR's and finals performances.  It was a great weekend of track and field for PV.

     (CEDAR INVITE ATHLETES): Cedar Invite at CHS.  Here is a link to the schedule.  This is a Varsity meet with 6 athletes allowed per event.  We will get as many athletes in as possible.  Bus/Release Schedule: On Friday, HS'ers will be out at 1:00 and MS'ers will be out at 1:10.  The meet starts at 3:00.  On Saturday, the bus will leave from the HS at 7:15.  All athletes must ride the bus to the meet to compete.
     (OREM INVITE ATHLETES):  Friday we will be leaving the HS after lunch (MS students will be released at 11:45).  We will then travel to Orem where will practice and stay overnight.  The meet is all on Saturday.  Here is the meet schedule.  A full itinerary will be sent home with the athletes who are selected to make the trip to Orem early in the week.

What an awesome thought.  We see so many of you progressing and doing great things; yet, sometimes there isn't as much joy as there should be.  The biggest reason... you've compared yourself to someone else, yourself at a different time, who you think you should be, etc.  It is important to let all that go and just do your best... and HAVE FUN DOING IT!

And a little side thought: Get your grades up... There are a lot grades that need to be improved out there... get yours taken care of.

A little XC Info - High Altitude Camp will be held our usual dates during the last week of July-first week of August (July 30-Aug 2) and we will be going to Pine Lake (up near Bryce Canyon).  We will also have a preseason parent and athlete meeting during the first part of May - an announcement will be made for everyone interested to be in attendance.

Week of April 16 - 20 & Panther Relays and Desert Hills Recap

Another week, another huge leap for PV Track and Field!  To say we are excited about all that is happening is an understatement.  This past week, we had dozens of PR's and SB's, we grabbed more Herriman Qualifiers and State Qualifiers and even saw two school records fall!  And we even hosted a viral video...
A great time was had by all at the Panther Relays.  We were able to relax a little and have some fun, while getting a great workout in.  We did push for two school records at meet.  The boys 4x800 came up just a little short; however the girls of Alli Baker, Jada Chepkwurui, Rylee Holt, and Jacey Finch posted a 9:51 setting the record by 5 seconds.
At the DH Invite, we fought through windy conditions on Friday to get many people to finals and finished well enough on Saturday to have the boys place 3rd and the girls place 4th.  We'll list out some top finishers and marks, but we must say, our favorite part of the meet was seeing the team rally around teammates - especially as we cheered on Claire in the HJ and all gathered to watch Dylan and Jakobe in the jar finals!  The meet started with Alex posting a SB in the 1600 and placing 3rd.  The girls medley team just missed on a SQ, but hit a top 10 time in the state to take 2nd.  The girls 3200 was a very strong event for us as Ellie PR'ed and placed 8th, Jessica took 6th, Rylee got a State Qualifier (5th), and so did Alli as she placed 3rd and set a new SCHOOL RECORD with an 11:07.36!  (We want to take a second and interrupt to just mention the unique awesomeness we are seeing right now - Alli is ranked in the top 3 for Utah Freshman in the 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 - she is the only girl ranked that high in three events let alone four... she is the best Freshman track athlete in the state of Utah without a doubt!).  In the boys 3200, we had numerous PR's including Mikey's 8th place and Logan's 6th place finishes.  The 110 hurdles had Jake placing 4th.  Samson placed 6th in the 100.  The boys 4x100 took 8th.  Jada made finals in the 400, however she was pulled to focus on her 800.  In the guys 400, Macen placed 6th and Samson took home the win.  Brianna took 7th in the 300h.  And on the boys side, Jake placed another excellent time in placing 2nd.  In a very competitive 800, Jada took 5th and Jacey narrowly missed her SQ in taking 3rd.  Alex was also just off the SQ in his 2nd place finish in the boys 800; Evan had a PR race and placed 7th.  We had two girls 4x400 teams battling it out, one sneaked in the 8th position.  While the boys 4x4 pushed to a 2nd place finish.  In a thrilling boys Jav final, Jakobe place 5th with a nice PR and Dylan hit his SQ and took 3rd with a PR.  Colin was able to take 7th in the LJ on a very busy weekend for him.  And Gina placed 8th in the Shot.  And finally, in her first High Jump ever, Claire not only took 2nd, but State Qualified!  Great job everyone.  Full results here.

Hey, guess what?... we have a busy week coming up!  We will have the Hurricane JV Meet on Tuesday, host a Youth meet on Wednesday, and go to the Dixie Invite on Friday and Saturday.  Here's the schedule for the week:
Monday - regular practice schedule (including most distance runners with an early morning long run).  Team meeting at 3:10 (after warm ups!) in the lecture hall.
Tuesday - JV Meet at Hurricane: start time has switched to 3:00.  MS'ers will be out at 1:30, and HS'ers will be out at 1:35.  Be thinking about what events you would like to compete in at this meet; entries are due Monday.  Meet Schedule (remember, start time has been moved to 3:00)
Wednesday - Youth Meet (K-8th) 3:50 - 6:00.  Please plan on being there to help with the meet after a short practice.  (Some distance runners will have an earlier practice to get their workout in - look at distance schedule.)
Thursday - regular practice schedule.
Friday and Saturday - Dixie Invite at DHS.  Unless there are changes (watch for texts for adjustments), HS will be out at 1:35 and MS out at 1:45 on Friday (the bus will come to both schools).  And on Saturday, we will leave from the HS at 7:45. As usual, athletes must ride the bus to participate and we highly encourage you to stay around and support the team even if you are being signed out by a parent.  Like we already said, one of the best things this past week, was having a big group out supporting our teammates as the meet was coming to an end.  No matter what some people say, TRACK IS A TEAM SPORT!  And those that understand that are feeling the energy of their teammates and understand that this is a special year we are having... let's keep that energy growing.

A quick thought on this... Brooks has put together some formula to measure the "Best Team" in the nation.  By this they mean top athletes, JV athletes, the improvement athletes are having throughout the season, etc... It is a true measure of a full TRACK TEAM... Everyone on a team.  And right now, the boys are ranked #3 in Utah and the girls are ranked #2!  This is exactly what it is all about.  We are a team where everyone can contribute and be a part of something much bigger than self.  Thank you, all of you, for everything you do for each other.  Let's recognize some of these great contributors/supporters by getting your Athlete of the Week nominees in.  You can look at these rankings on our athletic.net page.

Week of April 9 - 14 & Hurricane Invite Recap

Another great week for the Panthers! We encourage all of you to take a minute and think about the progress you've made this season so far... think about how far you have come and how far the team has come.  We hope you are as excited as us to see this growth!  Those that are putting effort in are seeing great improvements and the team is really starting to come together.

Hurricane Invite: One of our best meets in years.  Many of you really stepped up and were hitting SB's (season bests), PR's, scoring points, and even State Qualifying.  We saw some big strides from the distance crew as they grabbed points in every event, including some big sweeps.  The girls 1600 went 1-3 with Jacey, Jessica, and Rylee.  Logan (3rd), Alex (5th), and Julien (7th) picked up points in the boys 1600.  Alli State Qualified in the prelims of the 400 and went in as the 2nd seed (although she was pulled from the final to focus on her 800). The boys and girls 3200's swept the top 4 spots (Jessica 1st, Jacey 2nd, Alli 3rd, Elli 4th and Alex 1st, Logan 2nd, Julien 3rd, Mikey 4th and also Nathan 7th).  Jake's PR took 3rd in the 110h's. He also State Qualified (really!) with the win in the 300h's.  Samson PR'ed to take 2nd in the 400, and his wind legal final in the 200 State Qualified and placed 3rd.  Jada hit a SB to take 5th in the 800.  And Alli State Qualified and won her first 800 of the year.  And on the boys' side of the 800, Evan PR'ed and took 6th.  And many of our relay teams came together to place well and score points.  In the field events, Dylan placed 5th in the jav coming off of injury... and we also saw a big PR from Freshman Josh Bice.  Raymond placed 5th in the shot.  Celeste took 4th in first disc final of the season.  She also threw well in the jav and took 1st.  Also in the jav, Brynlee took 6th with a big PR.  Claire made finals in the shot for the first time this year and placed 7th.  Nick's 20 foot PR in the first throw of the disc final moved him all the way up to 5th.  Both Colin and Michael jumped just shy of the 20' mark to place 4th and 7th.  And in the team standings, the boys pulled out a 10 point victory over CV for our 2nd team win of the season, and the girls finished a very strong 2nd, 11.5 points off of Hurricane.
Overall, this was not one of our best meets of the year, it was one of our best in years.  Great things are happening at PV.  Check out the full Hurricane Invite results here.

Tuesday - PANTHER RELAYS: starts at 4:00, but come out at usual practice time to get set up (and throwers to get regular practice in).  All runners need to start considering which races you will be running (some will be suggested by the coaches, others you may choose; this meet is intended to be a hard practice, so everyone will run multiple events).
Wednesday & Thursday - regular practice schedule
Friday & Saturday -  Desert Hills Invite at DHHS.  Here is a link to the schedule (click "schedule" at the top of the page).  This is a Varsity meet with 6 athletes allowed per event.  We will get as many athletes in as possible.  Bus/Release Schedule: On Friday, HS'ers will be out at 1:35 and MS'ers will be out at 1:45.  The meet starts at 3:00.  On Saturday, the bus will leave from the HS at 7:45.  All athletes must ride the bus over to the meet to compete. 
As a team, we really appreciate the effort that was put in to having athletes stay at the meet and cheer/support each other.  Let's continue to grow this commitment to each other.  So, we'll keep this announcement here for a little longer:
This next announcement is for the parents... please read... To leave the meet with a parent, athletes MUST be signed out with his/her parent.  Also, we are really trying to build our team atmosphere by having athletes stay until the end of the meet and cheer on their teammates.  If parents want to leave before the end of the meet, athletes should stay and ride the bus home with the team.  Also, athletes missing practice (unexcused, before the missed practice) will not be competing at the meet.

Week of April 2 - 7 and Cedar JV Recap

We hope you have all had a great weekend and are ready for a big push to the end of the year.  Thanks for making last week such a great one.  The JV meet was good and the Youth Meet went very well thanks to all your help. 
Let's give a quick recap of a cold and windy Cedar JV Meet from last Tuesday.  Although the meet was shortened due to the cold and the length, we still had many great performances.  The distance crew started us well with Pyper and Addi going 1, 2 in the 1600.  We also a big PR from Kylee in her 1600 to take 7th!  Jose, Tavin, and Tyler all scored in the top 8 for the boys.  James looked good taking the win in the boys 110h.  In the girls 100, Brynlee recorded our fastest time of the season. The girls 400 saw Jada, Kathya, and Caroline all in the top 8.  And in the boys 400, Jaron and Josh both took top 8 honors.  Claire took 5th in her first 300h ever, and James placed 2nd in the guys race. In the 800 Pyper placed 2nd leading 5 Panthers in the top 8 including Sylvia, Gracie, Caroline, and Jenessa. Tavin, Tyler, Scottie placed in the top 8 for the boys.  In the field events, Brianna placed 7th in the LJ, Brynlee 5th in the Jav, Gina 2nd in the Shot, Dallin 3rd in the HJ, Mitch 2nd in the LJ (with a very solid PV debut of 17-10), followed by Kobe and Dallin in 5th and 6th, Colben placed 2nd and Jaron 6th in the Jav, and finally Nick set a new PR of 107 in the Disc to place 2nd.  Both teams placed solid 3rd's. 

Athletes of the Week: Get your nominations in (via text or email).  We will present them before practice on Tuesday.  For those of you who weren't at the meet, maybe take a look through the results on runnercard or at athletic.net and nominate a teammate who is notable.

Monday - practice at 8:00a at PVHS unless noted otherwise by your event coach.  PLEASE BE THERE! Now is the time of the season when each of us can really start to see big improvements if we are putting the work in.

Week of March 26 - 31 and PV Invite Recap

We will say this a million times over... Thanks so much for all of your help at the Invite.  It went so well.  So much parent help to cover everything we needed.  All of you athletes that helped out in the sun all day (both days).  Everyone who stood on blocks for hours.  Everybody who jumped up and helped with hurdles and finish shoot and got water over and over.  All trash picker uppers.  And everything else!  You couldn't count the number of positive remarks we had on the meet.  Thank you, thank you.
Since we were so busy, you may have missed some of the great performance we had at the meet, so here's a little recap.  Overall our teams did great.  Some of our best team results in many years.  The boys finished 5th in a very tight pack.  And the ladies placed a strong 9th.  Leading to a 6th in the combined standings.  Some of our top results: Alli Baker setting a new PVHS Freshman record in the 1600 and State Qualifying in her first race of the year with a 5:13; Jacob Mpungi win a 3rd in the 100 and a State Qualifying 11.30 and a 1st in an injury shortened LJ; Samson Doyle making finals in both the 200 and 400; Jake McArthur with a 6th in the 110h and State Qualified in 300h with a 41.81 while taking 4th; the boys 4x100 of Michael Moten, Jacob Mpungi, Jacobe Turlington, and Samson Doyle came out of the middle heat to take 2nd at State Qualify; the girls Medley Relay of Yrene Heinze, Autumn Bishop, Alli Baker, and Jacey Finch placed 2nd; the boys Medley Relay of Micheal Moten, Sherm Jensen, Samson Doyle, and Alex Hill took 3rd and State Qualified with a time of 3:41; in addition to Jacob's 1st in the LJ, we had two other finalists with Michael Moten placing 3rd and Colin Tudor placing 8th; Celeste Fiame had a huge win in the javelin with a State Qualifying throw of 117"; and finally, Gina Wright had a huge improvement in the shot to take 2nd.  And the list of PR's (Personal Records) and SB's (Season's Bests) is much too long to list... so great job to all of you!

Athletes of the Week: Email or text your nominations for AotW by Monday morning (remember it can be anyone who displays the awesomeness of PV Track and Field.  Tell us who and why in your comments. (Let's get more than 3 of you doing nominations!)

Now even though we get to take a little breath, next week is a pretty busy one as well:
JV Meet on Tuesday: JV Race at Cedar (most everyone who isn't in the top 4 or so on our team in their events is "JV").  The meet starts at 4:00 at Cedar HS.  The bus will leave PVHS at 2:15 and then we'll go get the 9th graders at.  HS out at 2:00 and MS out at 2:15.  Those 9th graders who are going on the Bio field trip need to know by Monday (at the team meeting) if you are going to be able to get to Cedar to compete so we can sign you up for events (PARENTS... if you want to give permission for your child to ride with someone else's parent up to the meet, you MUST send a signed note with your student to practice tomorrow to get approval by the administration).
Youth Meet on Wednesday: Our first (of three) K-8th Meets will be on Wednesday after practice (from 3:45-6:00).  We will need a lot of help with this meet.  This is a great opportunity to give back to the sport that gives a lot to you and help prep our future Panthers.  If you need service hours for something use this to count some time.  This is basically required for everyone to be at and help.  So clear your schedule.  The other meets will be April 18th and May 2nd.  Spread the word to anyone you know who might want to come participate.
Long Weekend: We don't have school Friday and Monday, but we need to have practice.  Please do your best to arrange your schedules to be available for practice at 8:00 each of those mornings.

Week of March 19 - 24

Welcome back everyone... Hope you all had an awesome Spring Break!
Well, it is Pine View Invite week, so we have a lot to do.  Please remember, everyone is expected to be available to help this weekend at the meet.  Although we will try and get as many athletes in to events as possible, we are limited in the number of our entries (just like every other team) and not everyone will compete.  Nonetheless, we expect every PV track and field athlete to be here and ready to help on Friday and Saturday.  (We do have a JV meet on Tuesday the 27th in Cedar, so everyone will get a meet soon.)  
Assignments: Boys have been asked to bring 20 oz gatorades, and girls have been asked to bring 16-17 oz waters.  Please have those to practice or Coach Holt by Wednesday.  
We also still need a few parents to help in concessions for the early shift Friday afternoon (starting around 12:30p until around 3:30) and on Saturday (8:30-11:00 and 11:00-1:30). Email pineviewtrack@gmail.com or text on the remind app.  
A few athletes will be excused throughout the day to help with the setup.  Everyone else will be out at lunch.  Get a quick lunch and get out to the track by noon to help setup.  MS'ers you will need to arrange your own rides over to the HS.

A few other reminders:
  • At our team meeting on Monday (go do drills first and then come to the lecture hall) we will discuss availability to the rest of the meets for the season, so please check your calendars.  
  • All registermyathlete and fees must be completed and cleared for further participation with the team (including practice)
  • Distance runners - remember you practice contract is due (signed by a parent) and that Levels 2, 3, and 4 have an early morning long run at 5:30a (wear white or bright and bring a light if you would like).
  • Athletes of the Week - still looking for nominations for Athletes of the Week from our first meets and the first few weeks of practice.  Send us the name and a short reason why he/she is being nominated.  You can nominated a guy, a girl, a field athlete, a sprinter, a distance runner, whatever... He or she doesn't need to be your gender or your specific event even.  Just think of someone (or many someones) who really showed what PV Track and Field is all about.  Email to pineviewtrack@gmail.com or text on the remind app.  Or even deliver to Coach on Monday morning.
  • We do have a Youth Track Meet (K-8th) scheduled for Wed, March 28th.  This will take place from 3:45p-6:00p.  Everyone needs to plan on sticking around after a short practice to help with that meet.  Also, spread the word around so we get kids out.
And... we have our biggest numbers in over a decade, but now we start to lose people.  Go get everyone that you have ever seen out for track and bring them back.  A nice word about how we miss them and want them with us goes a very long way!

Spring Break and Virgin Valley & Snow Canyon Recap

Thanks to everyone that got all their registermyathlete done (another plea to finish it if you haven't!) and also those who got fees paid.  By now, everything MUST be complete to be out with the team.

The themes for this Spring Break week are PRACTICE and SELF-MOTIVATION!  Since we are out of school and many of you are gone, this is the time where each of you have to prove that you want to be committed to the team and your own self-improvement and get your workouts in.  The meets this past weekend proved one thing, you must practice with consistency to get better.  So if you are in town, come to your event's scheduled practices.  If you're out of town, dig deep and get your workouts in.  Either way... you MUST be PRACTICING if you want to get better and contribute to this team.

A couple reminders: 
Remember, we have the PINE VIEW INVITE the week we get back from Spring Break.  All sponsors should already be turned in to Coach Holt.  Boys are responsible for donating 20 oz. Gatorades and girls are in charge of 16-17 oz. waters.  Those need to be brought to Coach at school or at practice by Wednesday of the Invite week.  Also, we are still looking for some parents who could help in the concession stands.  And, we are looking for anyone who could arrange donations or discounts on pizza and something like Chik-fil-a for the meet.  So if you have the hook-ups, get working on it! 
Also, this year we are going to do Athletes of the Week through nominations.  Think of a teammate who is doing extraordinary things in practice, meets, and in leadership, and either text Coach (through the remind app) or email Coach at pineviewtrack@gmail.com. Send the name of your nominee and a quick reason why.  We need guys and girls from all three track categories: sprints, distance, and field.

Race Recaps
Snow Canyon: This meet was a great start to the season.  We had strong events from many, especially many of our young athletes competing in their first track meet.  Autumn Bishop recorded our top 100 and 200 times on the weekend.  Pyper Holt and Gracie Clements took 6th and 7th in the 800.  And Josh Hardman recorded a 13th place in the LJ. Other top marks were Raymond Tauoa's 37' shot and Addi Baker's 5th place finish in the 3200.
Virgin Valley: Both squads did very well here, especially considering our limited entries.  The boys took first and the girls placed 4th.  Some top marks were: girls 4x800 (1st), Jacob Mpungi 1st in LJ (21-03) and 4th in the 100 (11.51). Boys 4x200 (2nd). Boys and girls 4x400 (2nd). Samson Doyle 1st 400 (51.59) and 5th in the 200 (23.32). Colin Tudor 3rd in LJ (19-0.5). Alex Hill, Carson Horspool, and Scottie Bushar going 1,2,4 in the 1600.  Julien Canales, Nathan Beitler, and Mikey Abbeglen going 1,2,3 in the 3200.  Evan Boyer 2nd (hmmm?) in a thrilling 800.  Jacey Finch with a 5:25 to win the 1600. And Rylee Holt and Sylvia Brown going 2,4 in the 3200.

Snow Canyon and Virgin Valley Info / Spirit Pack / Sponsors

IMPORTANT BUS INFO - Everyone who is competing must ride the bus to the meet.  Each athlete is expected to stay throughout the meet and cheer for the team.  You may leave with your parents (only) after the meet has concluded and they have checked you out with a coach.  Or you may ride home on the bus.

Snow Canyon Invite:
Bus will leave from PVHS at 3:00p on Friday.  MS'ers very quickly get to the HS and go load on the bus (you can change for the meet at SC).  We have to hurry because our first event starts at 4:00 and the girls in the 1600 need time to warm up.
On Saturday, the bus will leave from PVHS at 7:45a.

Week of March 5-10 and Virgin Valley and Snow Canyon Invites

What an awesome first week of practice!  We had a lot of new athletes ready to come out and contribute to our team.  The goal is now to KEEP everyone coming out.  This is going to be a big week.  We need to: get everyone registered and cleared to be on the team, everything lined up for the PV Invite which will be on the week we get back from Spring Break, and we have our first meets this weekend.

     Registration: If you haven't yet finished your registration, please go to registermyathlete.com and get it all taken care of.  This includes getting your Fees paid.  To be cleared for practice and meets, you must also have Physical taken care of. 
     Pine View Invite: Our Invite is coming up on the week we get back from Spring Break.  We are looking for a few parents who would volunteer to help with the concession stand as well as with the weigh-in of implements.  The concession stand will be open from around 12:30p until the end of the meet 8:30p on Friday and from 8:30a until the end of the meet around 2:00 on Saturday.  We try and organize about two shifts each day.  If you are interested, please email Coach Holt at pineviewtrack@gmail.com.  The weigh-in of implements is a pretty easy chore that needs a shift from 12:00p - 1:30p on Friday and another shift from 8:00a - 9:30a on Saturday.  Again, please contact Coach Holt if you are willing to help.  Another thing we need from athletes is water and Gatorade donations.  We are asking the boys to bring 20oz bottles of sports drink (often available as 8 packs from grocery stores) and the girls to bring 16-17oz (usually 16.9oz) bottles of water.  Bring as many as you can.  And we ask that you bring them by Wednesday the 21st, so we can know if we need to buy more. 
     This Week's Races: We have two meets this weekend.  It is not set yet as to what meet everyone will be traveling to.  However, athletes will know by practice on Wednesday.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EACH ATHLETE KNOW WHETHER HE/SHE CAN ATTEND WHICH MEETS (for the entire season, but especially this weekend) FOR OUR TEAM MEETING ON MONDAY.  This will allow the coaches to put each athlete into the correct meets and events.
Virgin Valley Invite - Friday, March 9, Virgin Valley HS, Mesquite, NV.  Throwing events start at 2:30p and running events at 3:00p NV time.  Those attending this meet will be excused from the HS at 1:35 (after 4th period) and the MS at 1:45.  The bus will come to the MS to pick up the MS'ers.
Snow Canyon Invite - Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, Snow Canyon HS.  I just got word this meet will start at 4:00p on Friday (not 3:00 as originally planned), so we may try and move our bus back.  But for now, the schedule will be HS out at 1:35 and MS at 1:45.  On Saturday, the bus will leave from the HS at 7:45a (no pick up at the MS on Saturday). 
     Other Bus Info:  For both meets, you MUST ride the bus to the meet to participate.  If you are leaving with your parent(s), you may after the meet after signing out with the coach.  You may NOT leave with someone else's parents, friends, or anyone other than your guardian.  In more extreme circumstances, you may leave before the completion of the meet, but this must be approved with the coaches before the meet.
     Spring Break Schedule: Each event group will have its own schedule of practice over Spring Break.  Please check with your event coaches for your practice schedule.  If you are out of town, please do you best to keep to the practice schedule.

Again, we are very excited to have each of you out with our team.  This is our best turn out in years!  It is very exciting to think what we can accomplish as a team with so many of you coming out and wanting to do great things.

Beginning of the Season Info

We are really excited for the beginning of the season.  We've had a great winter of conditioning, but it is time to get real track and field started!  We will be holding practices M-F at 3:00p each day (including the short day on Monday and ACT day on Tuesday).

Welcome to the 2018 Pine View Track and Field season


Here are a few things we would like all of you (parents and athletes) to know as we head into the season:


Coaches – At PV we have always taken pride in the quality of our coaches. It is no different this year.
Our assistants have great knowledge of their respective disciplines and will coach you to do the best
you can (when YOU put the effort in). As a member of this team, you are fully expected to follow the
coaches’ schedules and workouts and act appropriately toward each one of them.


Practice – practice is what makes you good. If you aren’t there or are late, you are hurting yourself and
this team. As a result, you run the risk of discipline or even being dismissed from the team. There are
also practices on Friday. I know that sometimes we want to get out of here earlier for the weekend, but
it is very important to not miss any day of practice, especially right before the weekend. So be there.
Practice will always be held at 3:00p at PVHS (even on short days), unless specifically told otherwise.  


Youth Development Camp -- We will be holding practice for 6-8 graders on Mondays and Thursdays
at 3:00.), so spread the word on that.  A meet schedule for Youngsters can be found on the same link
as our team schedule.


Meets and rides – your attendance at meets is required! So please plan on being at them. Because
this is a team sport and we are trying to reach team goals, we as coaches ask that you please plan
on staying throughout the whole track meet to support everyone. Those who would like to ride home
with their parents (no one else’s) can do so by signing out with the coaches releasing you at the
END OF THE MEET. You MUST RIDE THE BUS TO MEETS or you will be ineligible for the meet.


Bad Weather – It’s Spring, there will be days with bad weather. If so, we will still have some sort of
practice. Also, plan on bad weather at meets – it always happens!


School – It’s important, so do well. At no time should your education slip because of track or any other
thing. However, a dedicated athlete will make sure that he/she is doing what is necessary to do well in
school before it becomes a problem. If you miss days (and you will with meets) get the work and get it
made up. If you fall behind, arrange to talk with teachers and get things straightened out. Please realize
that you are still expected to be at practice and shouldn’t miss (talk with your teachers, take tests, get
homework, etc… before school or at lunch if at all possible).


Coaches will be doing grade checks throughout the season, and you will be asked to show your grades
every couple weeks. If there are academic problems (as defined by the coach) you may be asked to take
time off from the team to fix the problems.


and finally, YOU – Although this is a team sport, it is comprised of many individuals on whom we all rely.
As you are one of those, it is expected that as a member of this team you give an all-out effort in every
way. That means at practice, at school, and in every other aspect of your life (foods and drink you put into
your body, the amount of sleep you get, your attitude, and more…) – so surround yourself with good friends
who will support you and help you reach your individual goals and our team goals.


Paperwork and Physicals - are at registermyathlete.com.  This must be complete (including physical and
fees paid) by March 5th or you will not be allowed to practice/compete with the team.


Fees- School activity fees are $85. This is set by the District and covers transportation costs. This needs to
be paid by March 5. Take the money to the High School finance office and then show Coach the receipt.
IF YOU ARE PAYING YOUR FEE THROUGH YOUR FUNDRAISER, DO NOT TELL THE FINANCE OFFICE
THIS.  JUST PAY THE FUNDRAISER, BRING THE RECEIPT TO COACH HOLT, LET HIM KNOW THE PLAN
AND IT WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF.  Other fees explained below:


Uniforms - Uniforms will be purchased through the school.  Please wait for more information to be released
about uniform purchases (we are waiting on a few things with these).  Fundraiser money MAY be used to
purchase uniforms.  Again, if that is what you would like to do with your fundraiser money, JUST PAY THE
FUNDRAISER TO THE PVHS FINANCE OFFICE, BRING THE RECEIPT TO HOLT AND LET HIM KNOW
WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THE MONEY.


Hotel Fee - $25 hotel fee x2 (every athlete who travels to Orem and/or Herriman is required to pay this fee –
for each meet - not everyone will travel to these meets). And again, if this is what you would like to do with
your fundraiser money, JUST PAY THE FUNDRAISER TO THE PVHS FINANCE OFFICE, BRING THE
RECEIPT TO HOLT AND LET HIM KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THE MONEY.


Fundraiser- To help cover the cost of all sorts of things, we are asking each athlete to participate in our
fundraisers. Stuff fundraiser $ can go toward: $25 hotel fee x2, uniform (see important note above),
$85 participation fee (see important note above).

There are a lot of businesses out there that are willing to help sponsor, so ask around. The sponsor check
should be taken to the finance office and get a receipt to show to Coach.  Business names must be turned
in to Coach by March 9th to be included on the PV Invite T-Shirt and in the Meet Program.

All gear here is optional and MUST be done through your own order.  Fundraiser money cannot be used to
purchase the optional spirit pack items.
