A great first week of the season. We had many athletes out and many new faces. However, there are a lot of potential track and field athletes around school that aren't coming out. Take a look at your friends, people in your classes, tracksters who were out last year and haven't come out yet this year and talk to them and get them out... I've heard a lot of people saying, "I'll come out when we get into February." That's great, we'd love to have them all out. But remember, if we really want to do great things, we need to be working on it now. You don't learn to shoot a basketball on the first day of tryouts and you don't get in shape to run or learn how to jump and throw on the first day of the season.
What if someone told you that spending 5 minutes a day doing a simple exercise could make you a better track athlete... even a better person? Most of us would be intrigued and want to learn more. Mindfulness is the practice of taking a few minutes a day and allowing yourself to release some stress. This is a very valuable skill for handling anxiety before races (and tests, etc) as well as being in tune with your body and mind. Read the article, watch the video, practice. I promise, you will find improvement in many areas of your life if you be consistent with it. Mindfulness
Schedule for the Week:
Monday - Friday - regular practice schedule 3:00p-5:00p
Tuesday & Thursday - weights at 6:15a-7:00a for anyone who isn't lifting (such as distance runners, maybe some sprinters)
Saturday - talk to event coach for practice schedule
Youngsters: Practice for our 6th-8th grade developmental camp will start in toward the end of February. Until then, our Youngsters can come out with the HS if parents are okay with it.
Alumni Update: Carson Horspool and Rylee Holt ran in indoor meets for Weber and UVU this past weekend. Carson had a strong 3000 up in Idaho and Rylee ran the mile at BYU.
Indoor Schedule: If you are interested in running any indoor races, talk to Coach Holt. He'll get you the information about meets and registration. Indoor is a pretty fun thing to do and a fun way to start off your competition season early in the year.
Thought of the Week: "To win it all, winners have to be obsessive about the fundamentals and doing the little things right."
-Don Meyer
This is a great time of the year to develop good habits on all the little things. The truth of it is, if you don't do the little things well, you won't be able to do the big things. So take a few minutes and list out what are the little things for you and how can you improve on them and set a high standard for yourself and your teammates on these fundamentals.
*Distance runners - make sure you have read the excerpt you were given from "The Passion Paradox" by Thursday and also be working on the first 6 lessons from the other workbook you were given (when you are ready for more lessons, come talk to Coach Holt).
