Race Recaps:
PV Invite - A very successful meet for the team. We had more State Qualifiers and a ton of PRs. This team is really starting to come together. When looking at the 4A results so far this year, both the boys and the girls are sitting in 2nd place right now! So let's keep pushing and improving. A lot of good things can happen in the next 2 months.
In the girls 1600 Alli took 7th and set a season's best (SB); we also had great times from Brooklyn, Kate, Katie and Brinley which are contributing to our girls 1600 squad being the 3rd fastest team in the entire state. In the boys race Bryan got a new PR. Josh Heinrich placed a solid 15th in the 110 hurdles. Brynlee placed 8th in a loaded 100. And in the boys 100 Marcus set a new wind legal PR and took home 1st with Dom hundreths of a second behind him. Nic and Kemp had great races and placed in the top 20 overall with Nic taking 3rd in the PV Invite Session. Brynlee State Qualified in the 400 with a 4th place finish and Alli finished 6th. Jason ran an big PR in the boys 400 to take 9th. Brynlee earned another State Q in the 200 with the #1 4A of the year and a 5th place finish. Rachel ran an excellent time to take 12th overall. In the boys 200, Dom and Marcus once again went 1-2. This time Dom took the victory by .02 secs and set a new 4A STATE RECORD in the process, while Marcus' time tied the old state record. And again, Kemp and Nic earned top 20 finishes. The girls 4x800 was a very tight battle and ended with our girls just .01 off the win, but running the top 4A time this year. The boys ran to a solid 4th place finish. In the 4x200, the girls came out of the slower heat to take 2nd with another top time in 4A while the boys took 8th. In the 3200, Adri continues to chip toward a State time, just missing but setting a PR in the process with an 8th place finish. On the boys side, Boston and Scottie both ran a State Qualifying mark and were separated by a half a second. Our boys 4x100 crew took a 6th place. In the field events, our top performers were Carter who took 4th in the PV Invite high jump, Madi who took 3rd overall in the long jump and just missed a State Q while going over 16 feet for the first time, and Josh B. who earned a top 10 finish in the jav. We also had nice improvements from Nalu and Payton in the disc. Overall the girls took 6th out of 27 scoring teams, and the boys took 5th (and 2nd 4A) out of 29 scoring teams.

Thought of the Week: "You only find your limits by risking it all."
-unknown
This has been a great start to a season. It has been so rewarding to watch the team come together and each of you overcome the disappointments and struggles of the last year. It's hard not to think of all that has happened in a year, since this is when it all shut down and the bitter disappointments of what could have been set in. But you have all been so resilent - working hard to overcome struggles, setting aside things you can't control, and just giving it your best on things you can control. So as we head into the heart of our season for the next 6 weeks, think about this quote. Each of you are working very hard (some of you are really, really working). And we know you want the results to show all that hard work. So over the next little while think about how much you are willing to risk. Are you willing to possibly struggle in a race to teach your body to push to new limits? Are you willing to sacrifice a few more minutes with friends to stay and throw for just a little longer? Are you willing to dig in deep in practice and get the most out of every workout? You will only know what you can truly be when you are willing to risk all of it to get the absolute best out of yourself.

So take advantage and order any gear you want. Nothing in the spirit pack is required. Order at pvtrack21.itemorder.com
  • Drinks for PV Invite - guys and Senior and Junior girls we are asking that you get some gatorade/powerade for the meet. Race Recaps:
Panther Relays - We had a great turnout on a cold opening meet. Some great races, throws, and jumps were recorded by our Panthers. And it was excellent to get the season going.

Snow Canyon Invite - A very solid start to the invite season. The boys placed 3rd overall and were the top 4A and Region 9 team. The girls placed a solid 7th. Scorers for the meet were Alli 3rd in the 1600 (and a State Q) and Adri in 5th. Boston hit a State Q in the 1600. Dom and Marcus hit a State Q in the 100 and went 1st and 2nd while Dom broke the school record and Marcus ran a would-be State record of 10.55w. Alli qualified for finals in the 400 - but was pulled to run her 800 which she won with another State Qualifying effort. Dom and Marcus also went 1st and 2nd in the 200 with State Qs. The girls 4x800 team of Kennis, Laney, Kate and Katie took 6th. The boys 4x800 of Ben, Gary, Grant and Allen took 5th. Brooklyn took 3rd in the 3200 and State Qed. Adri took 6th in the 3200. The boys 4x100 of Kemp, Marcus, Nick and Dom took 1st and earned a State Qualifier. The girls 4x200 took 7th. Boston took 3rd in the 800. Brylee placed 5th in the 200. And the girls and boys 4x400s took 5th. Maddie D. took 4th in the Long Jump. And finally, Josh took 3rd in the Javelin. Great job everyone... some great Personal Records (PRs), and some excellent efforts for the first meet of the season (or ever for many of you). It is fun to see where we stand at the beginning of the season and now set goals and a team and individually about where we want to get to.

Thought of the Week: This one is more of a meme that I saw. There was a picture with a sharpened pencil and a dull pencil next to each other and the caption said something like, "It's easy to look sharp when you don't do much."
That may be a little bit how we feel after our first race week. Despite having some great performances, I don't think we are anywhere near where we are going to be in a couple months. And some other competitors/teams may have looked very sharp. Well good for them. We don't know what they are doing. Maybe they have been doing a ton of work and are just awesome (we can't control that) or maybe they are feeling fresh and sharp because they have chilled a little (again, good for them... we can't control that). But one thing I know for sure is that we are working very hard and may be a bit like that dull pencil. We've been pushing in practice, working hard, maybe ran a full schedule of races, or whatever that has kind of worn us down. But we are getting the work done. And when the time comes later in the season, we'll be able to do great things because we have been putting in the work right now.

Alumni Update: We had one Panther compete this past week. Jessica Hill ran her first collegiate race, and her first race at all in a year, and she took 10th place in the 5000 for Weber State down at UNLV.

Thought of the Week: "Opportunities don't happen, you create them."
-Chris Grosser
After a long year filled with all sorts of stuff, we finally get to compete again. We hope you are as excited as we are. Competition is a great opportunity to show your growth and overcome challenges. People usually meet competition with a variety of feelings: nerves, timidness, being scared, sometimes with confidence, or a variety of other emotions. First off, know these emotions are all common. So many athletes think they are the only ones that are scared before a competition. If we could all only read the thoughts going through everyone's heads, we would all see that everyone is having the same feelings. So try and use this thought to help you calm yourself and find a good place in your mind. One of the reasons we have so many emotions is we want to do well, and we're worried about how to do that and what if we don't do that. There is no simple answer to help you through this, but one idea is to remember is that we all have a journey of ups and downs; nevertheless, we can make those ups happen a little more often by making opportunities happen. You aren't going to see many people PR (set a Personal Record) who just stay in the back. Each of us in our own ways need to learn to create opportunites to do our very best. So as we head into our first competions, think of them as opportunities to grow, to learn, to shine, to improve. And go out and make those opportunities happen.

Thought of the Week: "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team."
-Phil Jackson
Legendary coach of, most noteably, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls and winner of 6 NBA championships with that team. When I imagine a great team, I think of all the parts coming together to make the whole: the solid role players who you can count on to get their job done everyday, the rookies who are learning from the veterans, the leaders who contribute through example, the superstars who get a lot of the glory, and even the coaches and the relationships they have with the team and the team with them. A true team includes each of these parts and everyone is just as important as the others. Looking at our team, we have so many of these similar pieces and everyone is valuable to making us a great Panther Track and Field TEAM. As you read this, take some time to think about your current role on the team and in what ways your contribute to the team (are you contributing to your very best ability in this role?). Then take some time and think about where you would like to see yourself in the next month, throughout the season, and in to years in the future (and what do you need to do to take yourself along this path?).
And finally, I'd just like to say this... as coaches we are very proud of you. It isn't easy to be committed to a tough sport like track and field where maybe the results aren't as immediate and many don't see the point or give credit to the hard work you do. It's not easy to push yourself to come out to practice in the spring of a long school year when there are so many other things you could be doing. I guess that's why so many people don't come out to do it. But, nonetheless, it's inspiring to see young athletes who want to better themselves and be part of something bigger than themselves. This is going to be a great season because of you!
