May 17-22 Region Recap and STATE this week

Well now's the time... it has been a long year since Covid interupted and shut down everything. We've been very lucky/blessed (however you want to say it) to be back and have a full school year and a full season. It has been great getting to know so many new faces. Our team's future is in great hands, and we are going to do amazing things for many years to come. This week, however, the focus is on the now. After a tremendous Region meet where we accomplished nearly every one of our goals, this is the week of State.

We'd like to invite everone who can to come up at watch us. We will only have a very few limited spots on the bus to travel and stay with the team (priorities of those will be decided upon by the coaches and people informed Monday at practice). So, we know it may be tough for everyone to get up to Davis HS on Friday and Saturday on your own, but if you can... WE WANT YOU THERE; WE NEED YOU THERE; AND WE HOPE YOU CAN COME CELEBRATE A GREAT SEASON WITH THE WHOLE TEAM.

Info for tickets to State for family and non-competing athletes can be found on the post below. Tickets go on sale Tuesday and MUST be prepurchased.

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week. I'm writing this from home and left the list at school, so sorry (again) for not getting you're names on here - but we all know you're awesome. Keep nominating teammates from each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance. Nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. This recognition will come solely from your nominations, so we need them. Athlete of the Week form. Or text coach on our Remind with your nominees.

PV Track & Field communications: If you aren't receiving our track text messages, text the code @trackprs2 to 81010 to be added to our list.

Race Recaps:
Region - One of our most successful Region meets in years. We set a goal of getting qualifications; and we did! In the 1-4A divisions, we have the 3rd most participants at State (with 30 - DH 32, Santsbury 31; and only 2 teams in 5-6A have more), and we also have the 2nd most events (again just behind DH). We had some holes left in our team as athletes graduated last year, and many of you have stepped up big time to fill those spots. The Region meet started with Katie earning a spot at state in the 3200 by taking 7th and Jenna scored a point by taking 8th. In the boys' race, we had our lone Region individual champ as Scottie pulled away from the field on a very hot day to take the win. Bryan ran a huge PR (21 secs) to claim fourth and qualify for State as he broke our Freshman 3200 record. In the 110h, Heinrich made the finals (but was a late scratch due to illness). The girls' 100 heats, saw Rachel run a blazing fast time of 12.81 to hit a SQ and take 4th (scratch in finals). The boys' 100 also went very well: Kemp qualified 3rd with a SQ time of 11.25, so we scratched him in finals to guarantee our other three finalists - Nic, Maxx, and Doug - a spot at State, which they did with 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishes. In the girls' 400, Mackenzie qualified 3rd with a new PR (in teh 4x200 a huge blister opened up on her foot, but she really toughed out the 400 finals the next day to earn 7th and a SQ). Jason and Turner went into the 400 finals ranked 3rd and 7th and finished up 4th and 6th to earn SQs. Braxton ran the surprise race of the meet, taking 5th in the 300h prelims with a big PR. He carried the momentum into the finals and took 7th to earn a SQ. In the 200, Arden, Brynlee, and Rachel all made finals where Arden (3rd) and Brynlee (5th) finished in the top 7 to earn SQ marks. For the guys, Tyson and Maxx qualified for finals. Maxx earned his SQ by finishing 6th, but unfortuantely Tyson was hampered by a sprained ankle from the 4x200 and just missed his SQ placement. The girls 4x800 of Kyanne, Pyper, Adri, and Alli ran a stellar time of 9:41.33 (4th overall in the state this year) to take the Region title while setting a new school and 4A State Record. The boys ran their best time of the year to take 3rd. Both 4x200 teams earned Region titles! The girls' team of Arden, Brynlee, Mackenzie, and Rachel ran a new School Record time of 1:45.32 (2nd in 4A this year). The boys' team consisted of Nic, Dom, Tyson, and Kemp. In the girls' 1600 Adri took 3rd to earn a spot on the podium and a SQ and Kate used a killer kick to run a nice PR and take 7th to earn a SQ. In the 4x100, the girls' team of Maddy, Brynlee, Arden, and Rachel ran their best time of the year to take 2nd. For the boys, the team of Nic, Kemp, Maxx, and Doug took home a Region title with a 1st place finish. In the 800, Kyanne ran a PR to take 5th. Joining her with a SQ (her 3rd individual of the season) was Adri with a 6th place finish. In the boys' 800, Boston used a strong finishing move to slide through the pack to take 4th and earn a SQ. Our final race of the meet was the 4x400 where the girls finished a strong 3rd and the boys' team consisting of Dom, Eli, Turner, and Kemp just missed a school and region record in taking the win. For the field events, we saw many more top finishes and State Qualifiers. In the long jump, Lucca took 2nd to earn a SQ by place and mark. Kemp took 7th earning his SQ (his 3rd individual). In the disc, TJ finished off a great freshman season by making finals, but just missing out on a SQ. The boys' high jump saw some excitement as Lucca and Carter both cleared PR and SQ heights at 6-00 while taking 2nd and 6th. Maddy placed 7th in the long jump. Emma made finals in the disc and was inches from a SQ place. In the jav, Bice and Doug punched a ticket to State with 5th and 6th place throws. Peter also made it to State as he hit the SQ in the shot and took 3rd.
Overall a very succesful Region meet. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported - JV teammates, parents, family, and friends. And thanks to the athletes who set the team and teammates above themselves to sit out a meet or event to help other get qualified.
In the point totals, the girls ended up 6th in another close battle between all the region teams. The boys moved into 2nd on the final event and proved they have a very real shot at a State Title next week.

Thought of the Week: "I was in tears before the Olympic final. But when I got in to the blocks, I had to switch my mind back into the race... I decided to give it my all."
-Wayde Van Niekerk (Olympic champ and 400m world record holder)
I've used this quote before (I think), but I thought this week would be a very appropriate time to use it again. So often, when we are preparing for a big event, we are nervous, distracted, scared, pressured and on and on. And all these feelings take away from our ability to perform like we have trained, to preform like we deserve. In Van Niekerk's situation, he was saddened by the death of his coach and overwhelemed by the pressure to perform for her on the Olympic stage. For us, this week, it is probably anxiety about performing on one of our biggest stages - the State meet - where we want to perform our best, and help our team (or not let them down), and do our very best after years of hard work. It's important to recognize that these are real feelings and that everyone has them (this recognition alone can help you be resilient and cope with the feelings). These anxious and nervous feelings can make you feel inadequate, like you don't deserve to be at State, thus causing you to underperform. Two things on this: first, like I just mentioned, everyone feels this way. Do you really think that you are the only one nervous and unsure about yourself? I promis you, everyone in that event is feeling the same way, even the top seed! Second, you do deserve to be there. You earned your spot. They don't just randomly pick people to participate at State... you earned it, so be proud of it and act like it.
Once we start to get a little handle on the nerves, the next thing to do is refocus on what we are there to do. Van Niekerk says he switched his "mind back into the race... (and) decided to give it my all". This refocusing is very important. Refocus on what you're there to do. Refocus on how you want to do it. Remember that you can't control your competitors, but you can control yourself. So what do you decided to do?... hopefully, give it your all.
When Van Niekerk pulled himself back together, he was able to not only win an Olympic title, but he also set the 400m World Record... all out of lane 8! You don't have to go win or set a State Record, but you'll be amazed at what you can do when you come to peace with your nerves and refocus on the effort that you want to give.
Let's go give it our best Panthers! We are all so proud of you!

May 10 - 15 COVID TESTING and JV Region, Sentinel & BYU Invite Recaps

It's been a great journey this year. As some of you have finished up your racing this year, we want to thank you for all the hard work you've put in and for playing an imporant role on the team as teammates and examples. And for those of you who still have a little to go with Region and (hopefully) State, let's keep pushing hard and not rest on the great things we've done so far. Let's go finish it off in a way that brings us joy.

Region plans (and State plans) are coming together, but aren't finalized yet. As coaches, we still have a few things we want to move around. So feel free to check on runnercard about who is participating in what, but know that some of that may/will change. Monday at practice, we will finalize it all in our team meeting after Covid testing; so please be there. Those JV runners who won't be competing, we invite you to keep comeing out for the next two weeks, and we really invite you to come out to watch and cheer at Region!

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week. I'm sure you are all awesome, I just forgot to write it down (sorry!) . Race Recaps:
JV Region - Very solid meet for JV Region. We took the approach that pretty much anyone competing in events at Region wouldn't be competing at JV Region. Not all teams took that same approach; as such that bumped us down a little compared to where our JV crew has placed all year. Nonetheless, we had many great performances. Jenna and Kennis took 3rd and 7th in the 1600. Camden took 6th in the 110s. Benson took 7th in the 100. Our girls 4x800 took 1st and the boys took 2nd. The boys 4x100 took 4th. Brianna took 2nd in the 400. Eli also took 2nd in the 400 and was followed by Zack in 4th. In the 800, Macy took 7th and Laney 9th. And Porter went 9th and Elijah 10th for the boys. The girls 4x200 team took 3rd and the boys took 4th. In the 200, Benson took 4th and Payton 10th. The 4x400 had the girls take 1st and the boys take 2nd. Dominic took 3rd in the long jump and Lauren took 8th for the girls. Payton took 9th in the disc. Parker was 6th in the high jump. Hyrum took 4th in the javelin with Seedar 8th and Shan 10th. Braedon took 4th and Payton 10th in the shot. Overall, this placed the girls 6th and the boys 4th in the standings. We just want to say thanks, again, to our amazing JV athletes. Some of you are graduating and moving on - you've meant a lot to this team; thanks for you example - some of you will be coming back next year - keep working hard, and let's build on the great things from this year to have an even better one next year!

Sentinel Twilight Invite - Despite the poor weather, we had a strong meet on both the boys and girls side up at Mt. Ridge. We used this meet as a reward for our top qualifiers - thus leaving home some athletes that could have filled in to spots to round out relays and other places that could have helped our score even more. Despite this, the girls took 7th (just 9 points behind DH) and the boys took 3rd (just 1 point behind DH). Amber made finals in the jav and took 8th. On the boys' side, Bice, Doug, and Sawyer all made finals. They finished 8th, 6th, and 2nd respectively, with Saywer's big throw setting a PR and earning a State Qualifier. In the high jump, Lucca took 7th. Marcus and Dom went 1, 2 in the long jump and Dom earned his State Qualifier. Brynlee and Rachel went 3rd and 5th in the 200. Boston ran a strong 800 to take 2nd. And Adri took 8th in the girls' 800. In the 400 Jason took 6th and Alli took 2nd in their respective races. The boys' 4x100 took 5th and the girls took 2nd. Brooklyn and Kate placed 6th and 7th in the 1600. In the 4x200, the boys ran a new all divisions State Record with a time of 1:26.80. Marcus and Dom went 1, 2 in the 100 into the big wind that was blowing all day. And Arden and Brynlee battled that same wind to take 7th and 8th. In the 110s, Josh placed 6th.  And in the 4x400, the boys ran well (place and results not upload yet?), and the girls ran to a strong 2nd place finish.

BYU Invite - A few members of the team stayed up to race at BYU on Saturday. Kate and Adri ran well in the 1600. Brooklyn and Pyper ran PRs in the 800, and Katie ran well also. Alli ran her best 800 of the year and the number 2 time in Utah this year to take 2nd. And Dom had two very good 200s. In the prelims, he became the first Utah HSer to ever break 21 seconds - with a 20.96 - breaking his own State Record. Then in the finals, Dom ran a spectacular 20.73w (with a +3.6 wind) to take the win over some great competition.

Thought of the Week: "Team culture is built on faith, love and trust. But the foundation must always be gratitude. Gratitude should always be the entry point to all we do in life."
-Diljeet Taylor (BYU coach)
We've talked a lot about building a team this year... and we've done a pretty good job of it. It has been a very fun experience seeing so many of you buy into the program and buy into helping each other (and us) do great things. As coaches, we really are grateful for all of your hard work, your time commitment, you desire to improve and achieve. We're grateful that you care - so the days that aren't so great, you get upset about; and the days that are great, you are so happy about. We're grateful that you are part of this experience and that we are part of it as well. Whatever the next couple weeks bring, nothing will change the wonderful experiences we've all had. So as we approach this championship time of the season, set aside your worries and fears, and remember that none of us - coaches, teammates, parents - will love you any more or any less because of good or bumma results. We all love you because we are grateful that we've experienced part of this journey with you.

May 3 - 8 and JV @ Crimson & Dixie Invite Recaps

Another great week. We put a challenge out on Monday to go find some points and many of you stepped up and had great performances this past week. Watching a team come together is an amazing thing from a coaching perspective - it's not anything that can be forced; it's something that comes from shared experiences (the good and the bad), caring about each other, and wanting to help those around you do your best. In the past few weeks, we've really been watching this happen.

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week: Dom, Marcus, Porter, Galu, Eli, Maddy, Laney, and Lauren . Race Recaps:
JV @ Crimson - Another stellar meet for our JV crew! It all started with Jenna's win in the 1600 and ended with a full heat of Panthers in the 200. In between, a ton of great stuff happened. In that same 1600, Kennis took 6th and we had PRs from Sadie, Allison, and Laney. In the boys' race, Allen took 6th while breaking 5:00 for the first time. And PRs for Talmage and Porter. Camden placed 2nd in the 110h. And our girls sprint crew continues to improve with strong races from Paris, Brynlee S., Crystal, and Robin in the 100 as well as a 6th place finish in the 4x100. In the boys' 100 Maxx matched his PR to take 2nd. He was followed by Tyson in 3rd, then Dayton, Payton M., Benson, and Braxton went 9-12. In the 400 Macy took 7th. Eli and Hardman went 1-2 in the boys' 400 with very strong times. In the 300 hurdles, Robin and Makenna recorded two of our best times this year. And on the guys side, Dominic took 2nd, Camden 8th, and Parker 10th. Jenna followed up her 1600 with a 4th in the 800 and Macy and Laney took 7th and 8th. For the guys, Allen took 6th and Elijah 7th. Our boys 4x200 took the win. And Grant and Carson went 1-2 in the 3200. In the boys' 200 Tyson ended up 2nd overall; he was followed by Maxx in 3rd, Hardman 4th, Payton M. 5th, Braxton 6th, Dominic 9th, Eli 10th, Lucca 11th, and Benson 12th. Caden also had his best race of the season finishing 16th. In the girls' high jump Brynlee S. hit a PR at 4-06, and Parker took 4th with a 5-00 jump and Talmage 8th. Hannah hit a PR in the LJ and Braxton, Hardman, and Eli went 6-8th on the boys' side. In the disc, TJ took 4th followed by Nomee in 5th; Brayden hit a PR to take 11th. For the girls' Emma took 2nd with a strong throw. In the jav, Scottie's big debut was overshadowed by Shan and Isaac's 4th and 5th place finish. Solid shot throws from Nomee, Payton C. and TJ placed them 3-5th. In the overall standing, the girls took 7th but only a few points off 5th. The boys ended up winning by 48 points. Great job JV crew... the future is very bright for PV Track & Field.

Dixie Invite - A big prep meet for us. Many athletes were in multiple events and carried a heavy load this week. Like we said earlier, Monday we put out a call to go grab a few points, and many of you really stepped up. A few of the great things that happened this week: The field events continue to progress. Galu took 8th in the disc, while TJ hit a nice PR and just missed out on finals. Maddy took 6th in the long jump. Carter took 7th in the high jump with another PR. Peter took 6th in the shot with a PR. The boys jav crew went 6th, 7th and 8th with Doug and Sawyer both PRing and Bice just behind them. In the girls disc, Emma continues to improve and work her way up the region standings. Kemp took 5th in the LJ with a PR. And Brynlee S. continues to make improvements in her high jump. Our relays ran very well this weekend. The boys 4x4 took 1st while the girls took 5th. The boys 4x2 took 1st and the girls took 2nd in a season's best effort. Both the 4x1 teams took 1st with the girls getting a State Qualifying mark and the boys just missing out on the school record. And in the 4x8 the girls took 3rd and the boys took 5th. The 1600 saw PRs from Bryan and Ben. The high hurdles saw great efforts from Lauren (nearly breaking 20) and Heinrich (PRed to advance to finals, where he then State Qualified in taking 5th place). Rachel and Arden both advanced to the finals on the 100 with big PRs (Rachel just .02 off State and Arden earning her SQ, in the finals they took 4th and 8th). The depth of our boys sprint crew was on display again as Kemp took the top seed into the finals with a nice PR and Douglas narrowly beat out Maxx for the 8th spot (by thousandths) where they took 3rd and 6th. Tyson also PRed and Nic got back on the track for the first time in over a month. Alli, Brynlee J., and MacKenzie all made the finals in the 400 where Brynlee PRed taking 3rd and Alli nearly broke a school record while hitting her own PR and taking 1st. Kyanne also had a great run in the prelims and narrowly missed out on finals. In the boys' 400, Dom and Marcus ran their first open 400 of the year and State Qualified and went 1-2. Jason and Turner also ran strong races to advance to finals where they took 4th and 5th. In the 300h both Dominic and Lauren continue to push their times down. In the 200 Rachel, Arden, Brynlee all ran well taking 7-9th in the prelims with Arden and Rachel going 6th and 7th in the finals. Tyson made finals in the 200 (taking 7th), and we had strong times from Heinrich and Turner. In the 3200, Adri and Kate earned a State Qualifier with great runs. Alli won the 800 and Jenna and Laney ran PRs. For the boys Ben ran a nice PR and Zack earned a SB.

Thought of the Week: "Great players are willing to give up their own personal achievement for the achievement of the whole group."
-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
I think this guy knows what he is talking about... 3 NCAA titles (back when you couldn't compete as a Freshman or he probably would have had 4, including a 88-2 record over that time) and 6 NBA titles. He was so good and so dominant, that the NCAA changed the rules (banning the dunk) for over 10 years because no one could stop him. He was also a 19 time All-Star and 6 time MVP. So even though he is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, he fully bought in to TEAM game. He learned at a young age - most likely under legendary coach John Wooden - that putting the TEAM first will always will bring about great results. Why? Probably more than anything else is because it creates a culture of caring. When we care about others, we want to do great things for them. The result? Great TEAM success. A secondary result is usually huge improvements and success for the individual as well (look at how great Kareem was even while putting his TEAM first). So what does this mean for us? Think about how willing you are to put the TEAM first. Are you getting to practice everyday because the TEAM needs you? Are you getting good sleep, eating and hydrating well because the TEAM needs you? Do you set aside some of your own wants, entertainment, and so on because the TEAM needs you? Are you taking care of all your school stuff because the TEAM needs you? If you are struggling in any of these areas, see if there's some way to improve (better yet, see if there is some way that TEAMmates can help you improve as you share with them some of your weakness and look for their strengths to help you out).
