Week of Mar. 23-28

*AN IMPORTANT NOTE...*
ALTHOUGH WE ARE ENCOURAGING EACH ATHLETE TO CONTINUE HIS/HER SCHEDULED WORKOUT PLAN AS BEST AS POSSIBLE, PLEASE DO SO SAFELY AND IN A SOCIAL RESPONSIBLE WAY. WE ARE NOT ENCOURAGING ATHLETES TO MEET IN GROUPS AND DO THEIR OWN GROUP PRACTICES.
It's PV Invite Week... but not really. That was probably the weirdest Spring Break most of us have ever been a part of. Hope this finds all of you and your families doing well physically and mentally. Not having been back to school yet, I haven't really heard any answers to all the questions we inevitably are wondering. We obviously won't have organized practice this week again. So a huge thumbs up to those who are doing their best every day and getting workouts in. Keep on keeping on. I've heard/read a lot of different takes about what route athletes and coaches should be taking during this time and to me it keeps coming back to the idea (that we've mentioned before) of controlling what you can and not stressing about what you can't. Can you control if you get a good workout in today? Yes, so be in charge of that. Can you control if a meet is cancelled? No, so don't worry about that. Can you control if you are going to create a good schedule for yourself as school gets going again (we'll talk more about that in a minute)? Yes, so create a schedule and stick to it. Can you control when/if school will be back in session? No, so no need to stress about that.

So speaking on schedules... I think it would be very sound advice for all of us to identify the demands on our time with school and workouts and whatever else, and then make a schedule that works for you. Try to make your schedule as close to your normal routine as possible (if you normally get up and go for a run, do it). It might not be exactly the same, but going to bed at a good time and waking up at a good time is something that will help you thrive right now. Those that are going to struggle are those who are treating this whole thing like some big extended vacation and are up all night and sleeping all day with eating habits all over the place and no "normalcy" in their lives. So control those things you can and make a "normal" schedule for yourself.

All of us coaches miss you guys like crazy. You are the reason we coach - not the big fat pay checks or the loss of every weekend and family time. And not being around each of you is tough. And we're sure its the same for you with your teammates. So reach out to them. Send a teammate a text or DM or whatever and just say hi and chat for a second. Maybe even do that to a teammate that isn't in your normal circle of friends. We've also tried to do a few other things to help us keep connected: keep nominating teammates for Athlete of the Week (send me a text with the name and a short reason why you're nominating someone), send a text about why you love track and we'll add it to our social media (like we did with about 10 comments yesterday on Instagram), write up a favorite memory of a teammate doing something awesome and I'll add it to our blog (or just shoot me an idea and I'll write it up). Each of these things helps us connected in a time that we need it most.

Thought of the Week: "It's times like these, I try to focus on the opportunities as opposed to the negatives. How can I adapt and adjust to put myself in the best position to succeed."
-Christian Taylor
I had the opportunity to watch this guy participate in the triple jump at the Prefontaine Invite in Oregon a few years ago. It was awesome... he and Will Claye put on one of the most amazing performances I'd ever seen. Taylor put up a big first jump to take the lead. Then Claye passed him on his second jump. They went back and forth until the final jump. Claye had taken the lead on his final jump and Taylor came in and got the crowd of over 10,000 totally rocking and then unleashed a huge jump of over 58' to take the win! I'll say it again... It was awesome! Anyway, what a great quote by an Olympic and World Champion. You might think that someone who may not get a final Olympics because of this would be more down. But instead, he is looking at this hiatus as an opportunity to better himself. I can pretty much guarantee he is thinking what are the little things I can to take myself from the 2nd best all-time performer in my event to become the world record holder? That's the kind of attitude that makes a person great. We may not have competitions right now, but now I can use this time to work on something that I might label a weakness and turn it into a strength in the long term. Maybe I can take time to watch more technique videos of my event on the internet. Maybe I can build a little stronger base mileage here. Maybe I can work on some form and core stuff that I often rush through because I don't feel like I usually have the time. Maybe I can work on better sleep habits. I don't know what it is for you, but if you look at this time as an opportunity instead of a negative and use it to improve yourself, you'll be a better person and athlete when this inevitably all ends.

Athletes of the Week: We got many nominees for last week and this week. And since this is a strange time with no rules, I am going to put everyone up here that was nominated! Remember, you nominate someone... if you feel a teammate is deserving of recognition for hard work, great performances, leadership, being a great teammate, whatever, nominate him/her.
Jacob Nobili (Sr. / Jumps and Sprints) - "Been to practice everyday this week. Coming and working hard."
James McArthur (Sr. / Hurdles) - "He ran finals in the 110, ran the 300, and after that still not feeling too well ran our 4x4 and pulled a 52 carrying the team to get 8th."
Hunter Edwards (Jr. / Sprints) - "He went to both meets and did his best with a positive attitude despite conditions."
Pyper Holt (Jr. / Distance) - "She has been super good about getting the girls together for practice and reminding us to do everything we're supposed to." and "Throughout it all she's stayed positive and has been easy to communicate with and still has a desire to do great things. You can tell she cares about the team and is working hard to get everyone at practice. The girls attendance this week has been phenomenal and I think she's played a big role in that."
Marcus Mckenzie (So. / Sprints) & Dom Mckenzie (So. / Sprints) - "They have worked a lot to organize practice for short sprints."
Luke Huddleston (Sr. / Distance) - "He noticed I was slacking and got me to run with him. We even planned a run together and invited a few others to join us. It's obvious he cares about the team and is trying to keep up together."
Josh Heinrich (So. / Sprints) & Jasmine Larson (Jr. / Sprints) - "They both have worked very hard at practice, especially this last week. They have been there every day even when most people aren't."
Alli Baker (Jr. / Distance) - "She comes to every single practice and does her best. She hasn't missed a day. It inspires me to come to practice too!"

I owe all of you a gatorade or a shirt! You read the comments about 10 of our teammates and you see the same thing... teammates who care. They care about the team, each person on the team, and they care about the sport. These are all great examples for all of us. Thanks to those who nominated them.

Youngsters: Youngsters will be postponed until further notice. Get out and run a bit. A great workout is to find a short hill and run hard up it and jog/walk down it real easy. Do a bunch of them. Or run around your block a few times. Maybe run hard on one street and then easy on another. Get outside and have some fun!

PV Invite: Obviously our invite has been postponed as well. We are hoping that we'll be moving our meet to April 17th and 18th. This will be in place of the Dixie Invite that was scheduled for that weekend. But for now, like with so much else, we are just kind of on hold.

PV Track and Field Great Feats

Maybe this is just a way for me to pass the time - I'm injured, it's raining, we are in some sort of quarantine and not supposed to really be out doing a lot; but one thing we can do is read and write - so I'm going to start writing some of my favorite memories about PV Track and Field. If you want to write up the story of one of your favorite memories, put it in a google doc and share it with me and I'll post it. Or if you have one that you want me to write about, send me a message and I'll write it up and add it to the list.

  • Coach Holt (I really don't want to put this one up, but Coach Beattie wrote it and it's kind of interesting to see a different perspective on it than mine).

Week of Mar. 16-21 and DH JV & SC Invite Recap

What a week... a lot of confusion and uncertainty, but a lot of awesomeness as well. First a big thanks to all of you who were able to help with the Youngsters meet. Those kids love having meets and they really look up to all of you - you really are their heroes. Below you'll see some race recaps (we'll get the pics from these meets posted on Monday). But first let's talk about practice. Practice and races have all been postponed for two weeks (and then the state will reevaluate everything). This means coaches cannot be at practice or plan practice. We will post ideas for you and you do what you want with it.
With that idea, I want to post the quote for the week up here instead of at the end.

Thought of the Week: "Welcome to real personal accountability. The coming weeks are a test of how badly you want it. You have to make the choice to work, train, study; there's no coach, no teacher, no trainer, no boss, no one but you. How far will you push yourself to be great when no one is watching?"
-Coach Page
I had actually planned on using a similar quote about personal accountability for this Spring Break week anyway; however, with recent events, the idea of personal accountability is even more important. We have talk a lot about this the last couple of days: working hard, holding yourself to a high standard, pushing yourself when no one is watching, and so on. This is big. We have already started to see great results from the early months of hard work. Now is an opportunity to keep working hard. Sometimes we get caught up in all this craziness and it brings out a lot of emotions. Just remember that you can't control a school closing or a season postponed or whatever else, but you can control how hard you are going to work in these coming weeks. So, have a talk with you parents. Discuss your goals and what it is going to take to reach them. Share with them your importance to the team and the targets we want to reach together. And then go work toward it all. Help your teammates be accountable. Text them, talk to them, help encourage them to keep working toward our goals as well. Especially those that you think might need a little push and positive support.
And stay healthy and happy. Get a lot of rest. Eat and drink healthy. Prepare a schedule for yourself that you can stick to... and then stick to it. You can still reach out to us coaches; so please do. We love all of you and great confidence in all of you.

Meet Recaps -
Desert Hills JV: Our first meet of the season started very well as we place 4 girls in the top 7 of the 1600: Jenessa, Kennis, Emma and Kylee. Really that whole girls crew ran very well, but we want to give an extra shout out to Madeline and Hannah who ran very well for the first meet of the season. The boys also had a strong start in the 1600 with Jason taking 3rd and good races from our young distance crew led by Keaton, Bentley and Nathan. Our girls 4x100 took first! The boys placed fifth. In the 100 Rachel M. took 4th and broke 14 in her first race. And in the boys, Nic Q. also took 4th in his first race. In the 400 Macy took 5th with a good time to start the season and Megan had a strong race. The boys 400 saw Elijah, Hunter and Chris all place in the top 8 with some other good races from Eli, Dalton, Wesley, Benson, Colby, Kameron and Alex. The 300 hurdles had Lauren placing in 5th and Aiden having a good run for his first try at the hurdles. The boys 4x200 team won! Jenessa, Emma, Kennis, Macy, Emily Madeline and Hannah all turned in good 800s after a their earlier efforts. Jason placed 3rd again in the 800 with Elijah, Eli and Allen having strong races as well. In the 200 Rachel and MacKenzie placed in the top 8. And Chris and Nic went 1, 2 in the boys race! The crew of Kylee, Sadie and Allison swept the 3200! And Keaton and Bentley went 2, 4 in the boys 3200. The girls 4x400 team won! And the boys took 2nd. In the Long Jump Lauren took 8th. Amberly, Maier and Ciarra all placed top 10 in the disc in their first meet. Taylor, Peter and Payton also all placed top 10 in the disc. Karissa had a very strong first jav meet and took 6th. Ciarra and Amberly were strong in the shot taking 3rd and 7th. And Payton did well coming off his injury to place 8th in the shot. All this led to the boys finishing 4th, just 1 point back of Hurricane, and the girls placing 3rd (which includes nearly a full varsity squad for both Crimson teams). So not a bad showing at all to start off the season!)
Snow Canyon Invite: SC Invite started off rainy and a bit ugly (leading to no prelims in the 200 and 300h), but we really had a strong meet and ended up with the girls taking 3rd and the boys as champs! In the 1600 Jess took 4th and hit a SQ (State Qualifier) and Alli place 8th. In the boys race, Luke hit a PR (Personal Record) and placed 12th against some of the very best in the state (well the all-time state record was set in this race, so...). James had a great race in the finals of the 110h and took 4th hitting a PR and a SQ. The girls 4x800 took 4th and teh boys took 7th. In the 3200, Jessica once again hit a SQ while placing 3rd. Luke also hit a SQ in his 3200 while taking 14th (again against the best in the country; this time the all-time state record was just narrowly missed, but the 5A and 4A records were both broken). In the 100 finals, Katelyn had a strong race and placed 5th. And in the guys races Dom (2nd), Marcus (3rd) and Sherm (6th) all hit the SQ mark. We followed that up with a girls 7th place in the 4x100 and a boys win and a SQ with adding Mitch to the crew from the 100! In the girls 400 final, Brylee moved way above her 8th seed to take 3rd and narrowly missed her first state qualifying mark. In the boys 300h timed finals James took 7th and barely missed his state mark. The girls 4x200 ran a strong time to take 3rd (a mark that will probably qualify them for state). Then the boys - Dom, Marcus, Sherm and Izaiah - went out and won the 4x200 (with a mark that will definitely qualify them for state) with a new State Record time! Alli took 2nd in the 800 and got her first SQ of the season. Brynlee and Katelyn both had good 200s and placed 5th and 7th out of the 2nd fastest heat in the timed finals. While Marcus took 3rd in the 200 and got another SQ (4 on the day... not too shabby!). The 4x400 girls took 8th and so did the boys. The field events also saw a ton of great performances. Some of the highlights: Filipo placed 5th in the shot in his first meet, Peter made finals and placed 9th, while Costa just missed finals with a 10th place finish; In the jav Filipo again made finals and placed 8th while Douglas had a strong showing in finals and moved up to 6th. Nick F. had a strong disc throw in prelims that carried over to a 2nd place and a SQ. And Gina also get her SQ with a 4th place in the shot. And Jacob had a strong 12th place in the LJ. Overall a great team effort led to the combined boys and girls championship!

Athletes of the Week: With a great start to the season, we are opening up the floor to nominees for athlete of the week. If you would like to nominate any of your teammates for the great performance, leadership and example, positive attitude or whatever else you think represent PV Track and Field in a positive way, send a text to coach (since we won't be seeing you) with your nominee(s) and a short reason why. We will pick a guy and girl from each discipline (Sprint, Distance, Field) for our athletes of the week.

Youngsters: Youngsters will be postponed for the time being (at least the next two weeks).

We are very likely moving our meet to April 17th and 18th. This will be in place of the Dixie Invite that was scheduled for that weekend. But for now, like with so much else, we are just kind of on hold.

If you have yet to check out the Parent-Athlete Meeting info, please hit the link and look through the slides (both parents and athletes); we do need record of who has looked through the info, so fill out the form at the end. And parents, also sign up to help at the PV Invite if you can.

Week of Mar. 9-14

Time for our first meets! We've had a great preseason and now its time to see what we're ready to do. Some athletes will be competing at Desert Hills on Tuesday and others at Snow Canyon on Fri/Sat. We will also be hosting our first youth meet (K-8th grade) on Thursday. We will host two youth meets and all PV track athletes will be required to stay and help at at least 1 of them. The meets will run from 4:00p-6:00p. So look at your schedule and plan on whether you can help at this first meet on Thursday (3/12) or April 16. (We will sign up at the team meeting on Monday.)

Schedule for the Week:
Practice -
   Everyone:
Monday - Friday - regular practice schedule 3:00p-5:00p *We will have a team meeting at 3:00p in the PVHS lecture hall on Monday*

Tuesday & Thursday - weights at 6:15a-7:00a for anyone who isn't lifting (such as distance runners, maybe some sprinters)

Wednesday & Friday - 6:15a for distance runners Levels 2&3 (no Fresh or Soph on Wed, no Fresh on Fri); yoga at 6:45a for everyone on Friday
Saturday - organize your own group run or on your own

Meets -
Tuesday: JV @ DHHS - meet starts at 4:00p, bus leaves PVHS at 2:45 and will then pick up at PVMS (HS out at 2:30 and MS be out by the bus loading zone and we will pick you up)
Friday and Saturday: Snow Canyon Invite (Varsity) - start times: Fri. 3:00p / Sat. 9:00 (click "schedule" link for full schedule; bus times: Fri. bus leaves PVHS at 1:40 and will then pick up at PVMS (HS out at 1:35 and MS out at 1:50) / Sat. bus leaves PVHS at 7:30a (no pick up at the MS)

Transportation to/from Meets: An important note for athletes and parents... All competing athletes must ride the bus to meets. We ask that athletes stay throughout the meet (even after their events) to support our TEAM. Athletes may ride home with their parent/guardian at the end of the meet and upon checking out with a coach (however, you may only ride home with your own parent).

Uniforms: We are picking up our uniforms MONDAY! You can preview what you want and sizes Monday morning or at lunch. You must pay before you can collect your uniform. Please pay the PVHS finance office ASAP (no checks) - except where noted. See pics below:

Spirit Gear: The first order of spirit gear is in. If you ordered something come pick it up in Coach Holt's room. The order is open again (this will be our only other opportunity to order spirit gear). The order is going to close on Wednesday (although it says Friday, we are moving it up to make sure you get your gear ASAP). Order can be found at pvtrack20.itemorder.com. *IMPORTANT* None of this gear is required, and this IS NOT THE UNIFORM (the uniform is explained above). This gear is for practice and to show off our PV Track and Field pride (for athletes, family, friends...)

Registration: You will not be able to compete without having your registermyathlete complete (including physical) and participation fee paid. Please have these taken care of.

Youngsters: Practice held Monday and Thursdays 3:00p-4:30. Schedule is nearly finished for our Younsters (look at the 2nd page of the document for our Youth schedule). Our first meet is this Thursday at 4:00p at PVHS (so there won't be practice at 3:00 - just the meet at 4:00, registration at 3:50). There is a $1 per event fee - pay (cash only) and register at the meet.

PV Invite: Our track meet is coming up at the end of the month, but it will get here way sooner than we think. We need help with a few things: athletes need to bring drinks to sell at concessions - boys: gatorade 20 oz. size, girls: water: 16.9 oz (bring as many as you can in your situation, you can bring these in anytime this month); Sponsor (see below) - we need everyone to get their sponsors in by Monday (its a great way to get some of your fees paid); Parent help - we always need some help with concessions and running the meet; let us know through the form on the Parent-Athlete Meeting if you can help out.

Fundraising/Sponsors: You can find sponsor papers over on the right column of this blog. If you'd like some help with paying your participation fees, hotel fees, uniform, spirit pack and so on, go get some sponsors to help you out. *IMPORTANT INFO* with each sponsor, we need $25 turned into the finance office to put their name onto the invite t-shirt and website and stuff. The rest of their donation can go to you for TRACK. However, anything that you turn in to the school goes toward the whole team and can't get applied just to your fees. So make sure you keep everything but $25 from each sponsor and then you can take that "extra" money in to the finance office and pay the fee yourself (or use for whatever other TRACK things you need). If you have questions, please talk to Coach Holt first. Sponsors need to be turned in by March 9th to get on PV Invite shirts.

If you have yet to check out the Parent-Athlete Meeting info, please hit the link and look through the slides (both parents and athletes); we do need record of who has looked through the info, so fill out the form at the end. And parents, also sign up to help at the PV Invite if you can.

Thought of the Week: "Only the guy who isn't rowing has time to rock the boat."
-Halee Edwards
As we get ready to head into competition, the most important thing we can be doing to build toward our team's success is to be helping build toward our team's success. If you are fully committed and working your hardest, the only thing you will have time for if be committed and working your hardest. There won't be time for the little and unimportant bickering and complaining that tears teams apart. And not only will you be building up the team, you may be surprised to find the amount of growth you have within yourself.

One last thing... It's getting hot, DRINK MORE WATER
Okay, one more last thing... try and get more sleep (especially with the time change)

Think about it a bit... we are going to talk about it Monday.

We are also looking for a few people who might be interested in helping with our Youngsters (even just once a week). If you know of anyone, please contact Coach Holt. You don't have some great knowledge of track, just want to come have some fun with awesome kids.

XC High Altitude Camp: XC runners, get this put on your calendar - High Altitude Camp will be held the same week as usual July 27th-30th at Deer Haven on Cedar Mountain. (Get this on your calendar, we'll remove this info after this week.)

Thought of the Week: "Pro tip: use the word 'choice' instead of 'sacrifice' and your mindset will change."
-Emma Coburn
Especially because so many of us are so busy... and track may not be our #1 sport or activity. But when we talk about making the "choice" to get out to practice, or the "choice" to join the team, or the "choice" to get homework done and grades caught up so we don't miss practice, we are really teaching ourselves and showing others that we want to be involved and want to do great things. And we are demonstrating that we want to be part of something that will make us a better person. Because each of us is making the conscious "choice" to do it!
