Week of March 5-10 and Virgin Valley and Snow Canyon Invites

What an awesome first week of practice!  We had a lot of new athletes ready to come out and contribute to our team.  The goal is now to KEEP everyone coming out.  This is going to be a big week.  We need to: get everyone registered and cleared to be on the team, everything lined up for the PV Invite which will be on the week we get back from Spring Break, and we have our first meets this weekend.

Registration: If you haven't yet finished your registration, please go to registermyathlete.com and get it all taken care of.  This includes getting your Fees paid.  To be cleared for practice and meets, you must also have Physical taken care of.
Pine View Invite: Our Invite is coming up on the week we get back from Spring Break.  We are looking for a few parents who would volunteer to help with the concession stand as well as with the weigh-in of implements.  The concession stand will be open from around 12:30p until the end of the meet 8:30p on Friday and from 8:30a until the end of the meet around 2:00 on Saturday.  We try and organize about two shifts each day.  If you are interested, please email Coach Holt at pineviewtrack@gmail.com.  The weigh-in of implements is a pretty easy chore that needs a shift from 12:00p - 1:30p on Friday and another shift from 8:00a - 9:30a on Saturday.  Again, please contact Coach Holt if you are willing to help.  Another thing we need from athletes is water and Gatorade donations.  We are asking the boys to bring 20oz bottles of sports drink (often available as 8 packs from grocery stores) and the girls to bring 16-17oz (usually 16.9oz) bottles of water.  Bring as many as you can.  And we ask that you bring them by Wednesday the 21st, so we can know if we need to buy more.
This Week's Races: We have two meets this weekend.  It is not set yet as to what meet everyone will be traveling to.  However, athletes will know by practice on Wednesday.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EACH ATHLETE KNOW WHETHER HE/SHE CAN ATTEND WHICH MEETS (for the entire season, but especially this weekend) FOR OUR TEAM MEETING ON MONDAY.  This will allow the coaches to put each athlete into the correct meets and events.
Virgin Valley Invite - Friday, March 9, Virgin Valley HS, Mesquite, NV.  Throwing events start at 2:30p and running events at 3:00p NV time.  Those attending this meet will be excused from the HS at 1:35 (after 4th period) and the MS at 1:45.  The bus will come to the MS to pick up the MS'ers.
Snow Canyon Invite - Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, Snow Canyon HS.  I just got word this meet will start at 4:00p on Friday (not 3:00 as originally planned), so we may try and move our bus back.  But for now, the schedule will be HS out at 1:35 and MS at 1:45.  On Saturday, the bus will leave from the HS at 7:45a (no pick up at the MS on Saturday).
Other Bus Info:  For both meets, you MUST ride the bus to the meet to participate.  If you are leaving with your parent(s), you may after the meet after signing out with the coach.  You may NOT leave with someone else's parents, friends, or anyone other than your guardian.  In more extreme circumstances, you may leave before the completion of the meet, but this must be approved with the coaches before the meet.
Spring Break Schedule: Each event group will have its own schedule of practice over Spring Break.  Please check with your event coaches for your practice schedule.  If you are out of town, please do you best to keep to the practice schedule.

Again, we are very excited to have each of you out with our team.  This is our best turn out in years!  It is very exciting to think what we can accomplish as a team with so many of you coming out and wanting to do great things.

Beginning of the Season Info

We are really excited for the beginning of the season.  We've had a great winter of conditioning, but it is time to get real track and field started!  We will be holding practices M-F at 3:00p each day (including the short day on Monday and ACT day on Tuesday).
Here's the flyer sent home for the beginning of the season... Please take a look at the whole thing.

Welcome to the 2018 Pine View Track and Field season

Here are a few things we would like all of you (parents and athletes) to know as we head into the season:

Coaches – At PV we have always taken pride in the quality of our coaches. It is no different this year.
Our assistants have great knowledge of their respective disciplines and will coach you to do the best
you can (when YOU put the effort in). As a member of this team, you are fully expected to follow the
coaches’ schedules and workouts and act appropriately toward each one of them.

Practice – practice is what makes you good. If you aren’t there or are late, you are hurting yourself and
this team. As a result, you run the risk of discipline or even being dismissed from the team. There are
also practices on Friday. I know that sometimes we want to get out of here earlier for the weekend, but
it is very important to not miss any day of practice, especially right before the weekend. So be there.
Practice will always be held at 3:00p at PVHS (even on short days), unless specifically told otherwise.

Youth Development Camp -- We will be holding practice for 6-8 graders on Mondays and Thursdays
at 3:00.), so spread the word on that.  A meet schedule for Youngsters can be found on the same link
as our team schedule.

Meets and rides – your attendance at meets is required! So please plan on being at them. Because
this is a team sport and we are trying to reach team goals, we as coaches ask that you please plan
on staying throughout the whole track meet to support everyone. Those who would like to ride home
with their parents (no one else’s) can do so by signing out with the coaches releasing you at the
END OF THE MEET. You MUST RIDE THE BUS TO MEETS or you will be ineligible for the meet.

Bad Weather – It’s Spring, there will be days with bad weather. If so, we will still have some sort of
practice. Also, plan on bad weather at meets – it always happens!

School – It’s important, so do well. At no time should your education slip because of track or any other
thing. However, a dedicated athlete will make sure that he/she is doing what is necessary to do well in
school before it becomes a problem. If you miss days (and you will with meets) get the work and get it
made up. If you fall behind, arrange to talk with teachers and get things straightened out. Please realize
that you are still expected to be at practice and shouldn’t miss (talk with your teachers, take tests, get
homework, etc… before school or at lunch if at all possible).

Coaches will be doing grade checks throughout the season, and you will be asked to show your grades
every couple weeks. If there are academic problems (as defined by the coach) you may be asked to take
time off from the team to fix the problems.

and finally, YOU – Although this is a team sport, it is comprised of many individuals on whom we all rely.
As you are one of those, it is expected that as a member of this team you give an all-out effort in every
way. That means at practice, at school, and in every other aspect of your life (foods and drink you put into
your body, the amount of sleep you get, your attitude, and more…) – so surround yourself with good friends
who will support you and help you reach your individual goals and our team goals.

Paperwork and Physicals - are at registermyathlete.com.  This must be complete (including physical and
fees paid) by March 5th or you will not be allowed to practice/compete with the team.

Fees- School activity fees are $85. This is set by the District and covers transportation costs. This needs to
be paid by March 5. Take the money to the High School finance office and then show Coach the receipt.
IF YOU ARE PAYING YOUR FEE THROUGH YOUR FUNDRAISER, DO NOT TELL THE FINANCE OFFICE
THIS.  JUST PAY THE FUNDRAISER, BRING THE RECEIPT TO COACH HOLT, LET HIM KNOW THE PLAN
AND IT WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF.  Other fees explained below:

Uniforms - Uniforms will be purchased through the school.  Please wait for more information to be released
about uniform purchases (we are waiting on a few things with these).  Fundraiser money MAY be used to
purchase uniforms.  Again, if that is what you would like to do with your fundraiser money, JUST PAY THE
FUNDRAISER TO THE PVHS FINANCE OFFICE, BRING THE RECEIPT TO HOLT AND LET HIM KNOW
WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THE MONEY.

Hotel Fee - $25 hotel fee x2 (every athlete who travels to Orem and/or Herriman is required to pay this fee –
for each meet - not everyone will travel to these meets). And again, if this is what you would like to do with
your fundraiser money, JUST PAY THE FUNDRAISER TO THE PVHS FINANCE OFFICE, BRING THE
RECEIPT TO HOLT AND LET HIM KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH THE MONEY.

Fundraiser- To help cover the cost of all sorts of things, we are asking each athlete to participate in our
fundraisers. Stuff fundraiser $ can go toward: $25 hotel fee x2, uniform (see important note above),
$85 participation fee (see important note above).

May 15-20 and Region Recap

What a great Region Meet for the Panthers!  Although not everything went perfect, we had many athletes go above the projections and as a team, we really stepped forward.  Day 1 saw three new qualifiers in the 1600.  In the girls' race, Caroline set a quick pace and led herself and Jessica to a 4th and 3rd place finish (qualifying by time and place).  On the guys' side, Alex also set out a quick pace and pushed to a 4th place qualifying time and place.  The boys' medley ran a very solid race taking 2nd and putting up the 3rd fastest 3A time this season.  The rest of the day saw many athletes making finals and setting personal bests.  Day 2 brought a few more qualifiers and many placers in the finals.  Josie went went our theme and went out hard in the girls' 800 and held on to a qualifying time.  Dillan threw the shot to a 2nd place finish.  Jacob State Q'ed in the 100 and had the performance of the day as he won the LJ in his first attempt at the event with a jump just short of 22'.  The boys' 4x400 ran their best race of the season and placed 2nd and made State by time and place.  Jake ran a PR in the 300's and placed 3rd.  Carson ran a strong race and placed 3rd in the 3200.  Even many of those who didn't qualify had great performances.  Kobe joined Colin and Jacob in the LJ finals.  Raymond made finals in the shot.  Dillan, Dylan, and Jakobe all made finals in the jav. Amelia scored well in both jumps.  Celeste placed in the jav.  Many of our distance runners scored in the top 8.  Jada ran an excellent 800 (moving her to #3 freshman in the state).  And the list could go on and on!
We are super proud of all our athletes.  Thanks for all your hard work.  And thanks for pulling together as a team.  Remember what we talked about at the end of the meet... evaluate your season and what you can to do continue to grow; figure out who you can bring to the team next year to help us grow and continue to improve; and continue to push yourself and those around you to be your best.

As we move into State week, here's our plan for the week:

Monday: Distance runners have AM practice at 6:30 this week.  Team meeting at 3:00 in the lecture hall.

Tuesday & Wednesday: practice as usual.

Thursday: leaving to Provo at 12:30 from PVHS (MS'ers will get a ride up to the HS).  An itinerary will be sent out early in the week.

Friday and Saturday: State Track Meet at BYU!

JUST A REMINDER FOR A FEW OF THE DISTANCE RUNNERS... some received an article to read; get that article read and get your parents to read it BEFORE OUR XC BOB FIRMAN MEETING ON TUESDAY AT 5:00p!  And please be to the meeting with a parent.

May 8-13 & JV Region and Herriman Recap

It's championship season!  Congrats everyone on a great season... it's not over for everyone, but we want to thank everyone who came out this year and saw great success through the hard work and dedication that this lifestyle requires.

At our JV Championships, we saw a lot of good racing and PR's.  Kobe finished up his season with a PR in the 100, 200, and LJ. James PR'ed in the 200. Parker and Jaron PR'ed in the 400 and took home top 8 finishes.  Tavin and Landon PR'ed in the 1600. Julian, Colben and Jaron PR'ed in the jav.  The boys also saw Landon PR'ing in the LJ and Dallin PR'ing in both jumps!  On the girls' side, we got PR's from Yrene in the 100, 200, and 400; Seanne and Kathya in the 400; Po and Teuila in the jav; and Teuila also PR'ed in the LJ.

Although a few JV athletes qualified to finish up their seasons at Herriman, most finished up the year with this meet.  We just want to let all of them know that they are the heart of this program!  Again, thanks for coming out this season, and we look forward to you coming out again next year (and bringing a few more friends now that you have seen how fun track is!)  Take a few minutes and think about your season, what you did well, what you can do better with; and then, keep up those things you are doing great at and work on your weaknesses and turn them into strengths for the future.  All those who aren't competing anymore, should be heading into your breaks.  Use this time to recover from the long season.  Heal up a bit if you've been injured.  Go out and do a few other active things: swim, bike, hike, keep lifting, yoga, etc... Those who are headed into XC, take the time you need off, then start building back up with easy 10-25 minute runs and be ready for the official start of XC on June 5th.

At the Herriman Twilight Meet, we were able to continue to add to our list of State Qualifiers.  In the first race of the day, our girls medley ran a season best and easily qualified.  It was a great run by Kaylani, Josie, Jada, and Jacey (who had to jump out of the suburban and get to the line with no warm up after a long day of AP testing!).  Our next qualifiers were the 4x100 boys.  In only their second attempt this season, the team of Colin, Jacob, Michael, and Samson ran a great race to hit their StateQ.  Our final StateQ was a sub 2:00 first for Alex in the 800!
Great job everyone.  Now we turn out attention to the Region 9 Championships at Cedar HS on Wednesday and Thursday.  The goal of the meet will be to pull in as many State Qualifiers as possible.  So get physically and mentally ready for the big push it takes to achieve such an elite status.

Info for Region: I'm not going to post the bus time yet, until I know for sure that the bus time won't be changed!  But we will be leaving toward the end of the school day on Wednesday and Thursday and heading up to Cedar HS.  The meet starts at 4:00p both days.  We would really ask that all our Varsity athletes plan on staying throughout the whole meet.  Stay and cheer on your teammates!  We may invite a few JV athletes to come up with the team for support and spirit.

Schedule for the week:
Monday - distance runners have their workout at 6:00a.  Team meeting after school to cover key info for the week and get us ready to roll into Region.

Tuesday - usual practice schedule.

Wednesday - Region Championships!

Thursday - Region Championships!

Friday - usual practice schedule for those who are going to State.
