Letter sent to Parents - Help at Region

Parents,
We are coming up on the end of a very successful track season (and a who knows school year!).
For the Region meet next week (Wed/Thurs @ DHills) we have been assigned to work the javelin.  We are looking for any parents/family/friends that could help us with this event.  You don't necessarily need to know anything about the jav, just be willing to help.  If we have enough helpers, we could work out a schedule that would allow you to go watch your own kids in their events.  The ultimate goal would be that the coaches don't have to all be there running the event so we can actually go coach the kids.
Thanks for all your help this year... It really has been a very successful and fun season.  We look forward to the last couple of meets and seeing the great improvement the kids are ready for.
We are hoping to be able to have a little more of an end-of-the-year get together this year than we have in the past.  It is a very busy time of year and it makes it hard to have a larger banquet; so we are thinking an ice cream social where we could give out some awards and recognize kids would be fun.  More info will be coming out about that soon.

Week of April 18-23

I am too late posting for the Hurricane JV meet.  All went well there, so I won't stress.
This weekend, the varsity will be heading over to the Dixie Invite.  On Friday, the bus will leave the HS at 1:45 (out at 1:35) and then we will get the MS around 1:50 (out at 1:45).  On Saturday, the bus will leave the HS at 7:50, be there by 7:40.

DH Multi and Distance Carnie, DH Invite, and Hurricane JV Meets

More meets and more Herriman and State Qualifiers from PV Track and Field!
DH Multi and Distance Carnival: Cierra Costa and Brianna Loya both participated in the heptathlon at the DH Multi.  And both put in very strong performances.  Cierra won multiple events and almost medaled despite NH on the High Jump.  Keaton Jorgenson and Colin Tudor both did great in the decathlon (minus pole vault).  In the distance section of the meet we got a few more Herriman Qualifiers and set new school records in both the boys and girls 4x800's - congrats to everyone on those teams: Logan Hall, Skylar Abel, Paul Gaona, and Nick Hill; Jacey Finch, Alli Peterson, Rylee Holt and Caroline Clements!  New to this meet this year was an inclusion of a few other events which turned out great for Brian Johnson as he hit a State Qualifier in the discus!

DH Invite: 18 more Herriman Qualifiers and 5 new or improved State Qualifiers at DH this past weekend.  Cierra improved on her 300h mark, Neitana went to 3-0 in invites with a new jav PR, Jacey went 5:17 in her 1600, and Kawika broke off a couple big jumps to go over 20' in the long jump.  And the performance of the meet was the boys' medley team that set a new school record of 3:35.48 (despite some controversy!) - congrats to Kawika Santiago, Sampson Doyle, Paul Gaona, and Nick Hill on taking down the 15 year old record!

Hurricane JV: Some great times and marks from yesterday's JV meet at Hurricane.  We saw wins from Sylvia Brown and Julien Canales (Herriman Q) in the 1600, Seanne Smith and Evan Boyer in the 800, Logan Hall in the 3200, Jake McArthur in the 300h, and a Herriman Q from Jacob Mpungi in the 100.

Athletes of the Week -
DH Multi:
Girls Sprints: Teuila Leung Choi - Sophomore, Teuila has continued to see strong improvement in her 100 times throughout the season.
Boys Sprints: Kyson Certonio - Freshman, Kyson hit his Herriman Q in the 100, breaking into the 11's for the first time this season.
Girls Distance: Josie Bushar - Junior, Josie ran a big 7 second PR in the 1600 narrowly missing a State Q.
Boys Distance: Alex Hill - Sophomore, Alex ran a great open 800, dipping under 2:05 for a new PR.
Girls Field: Cierra Costa - Senior, new territory for Cierra to get be in a field event, but in her hep jav, Cierra threw a Herriman Q and team leading 93 feet.
Boys Field: Brian Johnson - Senior, Triple B's State Qualifying 131' throw moves him into the top four in 3A.

DH Invite/Hurricane JV:
Girls Sprints: Naith Justo Barrios - Freshman, Naith has been a great example of hard work and commitment all season.
Boys Sprints: Jacob Mpungi - Sophomore, Jacob is rounding into for with his first sub 12 100m and Herriman Q.
Girls Distance: Jacey Finch - Sophomore, Jacey PR'ed and hit a State Q in the 1600 at DH.

Week of April 4-10

A big sigh of relief...
We had a great Pine View Invite last weekend!  And it couldn't have happened without all your help.  Athletes, parents, volunteers - thank you all!
St. George News' PV Invite article

First a run down of what is happening this week and then we'll review last week.

Tuesday is the final Youngsters Meet held at PV.  Everyone make sure you are there to help after practice.  Next Tuesday, April 12th, DHHS will take their turn hosting the Youngsters Meet - still at 4:30.

DHHS Multi's and Distance Carnie:  This meet will be held at DHHS on Thurs and Fri.  There will be a bus leaving PVHS right at the end of school (out at 2:30, leaving at 2:40); we will then go pick up the Middle Schoolers (who won't need to be released early).  Same bus schedule for both days.  Athletes may drive themselves and any siblings (but not with anyone else) with a signed release form - simply because we will be having a lot of athletes traveling to this meet.  We will make sure our races are set on Wednesday, so be at practice.

The Milford Invite on Sat. that we were planning on going to earlier in the year has been called off for us.  So we will have no meet on Saturday.

Look for a possible team party on Saturday afternoon at the park - we need to eat all the extra food from the Invite!

recap of last week:

The PV Invite was a huge success.  The smaller number of schools made the meet very manageable and everything went very smoothly (even with the weird throwing locations).  We had many more Herriman Qualifiers, and got State Qualifiers from Nick (2nd Place) and Rylee (4th) in the 1600, Mitch, Preston, Jacey (4th), and Meskerem in the 3200.  Cierra in the 300h (3rd), Paul in the 800, Kaytlin (3rd) in the disc.  And Neitana improved his state qualifying throw in the jav for the win.  Other finalist/placers were Keaton in the 110h, Alli in the 800, the boys 4x800 team that took 3rd, and the girls medley that took 3rd.  And a huge shout out to the Girls 4x800 of Jacey, Rylee, Caroline and Meskerem that set a new school record with a time of 10:00.46!

Athletes of the Week

  • Sprint Boys: Sampson Doyle - Sophomore, Herriman qualified and PR'ed in the 100 with at time of 11.75
  • Sprint Girls: Cierra Costa - The Senior earns the recognition again after taking third in the 300h and State Qualifying.
  • Distance Boys: Nick Hill - The Senior XC State Champ had a great finish to secure 2nd in the 1600 with a State Qualifying (and narrow PR) of 4:25.33
  • Distance Girls: Jacey Finch - Sophomore, Had a great 3200 taking 4th and setting a 12 second PR to qualify for State.  Also ran the lead leg on the record setting 4x800 team.
  • Field Boys: Cole Jones - The first year Junior jav thrower set a PR in the event.
  • Field Girls: Kaytlin Dowdell - Another Senior earning the recognition for the second time this year after State Qualifying in the disc.

Also...
Athletes of the Week from the previous week

  • Sprint Boys: Maysen Fielding - Freshman, strong multi-event athlete has a great future in track.
  • Sprint Girls: Teuila Leung Choi - Sophomore, consistent hard worker who is seeing strong PR's in every event this year.
  • Distance Boys: Mikey Abegglen - Freshman, good runs at SC and a great 1600 at PV, breaking 5:00 for the first time with a 4:46.
  • Distance Girls: Addi Baker - Freshman, ran a great 3200 in the wind at SC and followed it up with a near State Qualifying time at PV.
  • Field Boys: Daniel Judd - Sophomore, first year thrower who has been putting more time and effort than anyone.  Great effort and even better attitude.
  • Field Girls: Anna Baker - Junior, has had multiple strong shot throws to start off the season.

And Finally...
Athletes of the Month of March

  • Girls - Rylee Holt.  Just a Freshman, Rylee has already made a big mark on our track team.  In her first three track races she has taken 2nd in the 3200 at Hurricane Invite and State Qualified (and is at this point in time the 3A State leader in the event), taken 4th at the PV Invite in the 1600, again State Qualifying (ranked 3rd in the State).  And ran the 2nd leg on the school record 4x800 team!  Great job Rylee.

  • Boys - Neitana Leung Choi.  In the two invites so far this year, Neitana has come home with gold and State Qualifying marks in the jav.  His current PR of 163' is currently 2nd in 3A.

Week of March 28 - April 2

A lot of important stuff this week...
Tuesday is our first Youngster Meet.  Practice will be held as usual (at 3:05 at PVHS).  After, athletes will need to stick around and help with the Youngsters Meet.  It starts at 4:30 and will last about 2 hours.  We need help with timing, field events, putting athletes in heats, hurdles, and all the other stuff that happen at track meets (this will be good practice for our Invite on Fri/Sat).  We are only hosting 2 Youngster Meets this year (with DH hosting two others); so you need to be to at least 1 to help you earn your Track Letter.  Our next Youngsters Meet will be next Tues.

Fri/Sat is the PV Invite.  Although our numbers might be down a little this year, our Invite is historically one of the largest high school hosted meets in Utah.  EVERYONE MUST BE AT THE MEET THIS WEEKEND!  You will be assigned a job(s) from hurdle crew, timing, field event help, finish line help, concession, announcing, etc...  Even those who are running will be helping with the meet when they don't need to be prepping for their event.  Please be at practice each day this week to get your assignment.  We still could use more help from parents (especially from anyone who is involved in field events).  Also, remember your contribution to the concessions - Boys: 20oz Gatorade/PowerAde; Girls: 16.9oz water.  Bring as many as you can.

Here's the St. George News article previewing the season, sorry if you got left off... it looks like they just looked at Hurricane Invite results and picked a few of our better performers to mention.

Hurricane Invite and Snow Canyon JV

We had a great start to the season the past two weeks with the Hurricane Invitational and Snow Canyon JV meet.
Hurricane Invite: Our top performances at Hurricane included _ State Qualifiers and numerous qualifiers for Herriman.  Setting the pace with our top performance of the meet was Rylee Holt in the 3200.  Placing 2nd in a State Qualifying time of 11:29, Rylee led 3 Panthers who qualified in the event (including Caroline Clements, 4th at 11:38; and Josie Bushar 5th at 11:43) and 6 who placed in the top 10.  Two of our 3200 boys also qualified for State including Nick Hill placing 4th with a 9:49 and Carson Horspool taking 5th in 9:52.  Mitch Price narrowly missed out on the State Q by just 1.5 seconds.  Other notable performance on the distance side included Skylar Abel and Addi Baker both placing 7th in the 1600 (at 4:40 and 5:33, respectfully) and Julien Canales destroying the Freshman Sub-5:00 coming in at 4:53.  Logan Hall also hit a huge PR in his first sub effort at 4:48.  In the sprints, Keaton Jorgenson made finals and took 7th in the 110 hurdles, and Samson Doyle led the way with his 10th place in the 200 and Cierra Costa ended up 6th in 200 for a strong start to the season.  Field events also showed well with a win and a State Qualifier from Neitana Leung Choi with a jav throw of 159'.  Kaytlin Dowdell led the way on the girls' side with a strong 2nd place finish in the discus.  We also had strong jumps from Amelia Goebel who State Qualified in the high jump, clearing 4'10" in her first meet as a Panther.  And Brandon Yates and Jacob McArthur both hit Herriman marks in the high jump on the boys' side.  Finally, Kawika Santiago made finals in the long jump with a solid mark just .5" shy of 19'.
St. George News article

Our athletes of the week from the Hurricane Invite were:
  • Boys' Distance: Carson Horspool - a Sophomore, Carson State Qualified in his very first attempt at  the 3200.  Huge season for him on the way.
  • Girls' Distance: Rylee Holt - a Freshman, Rylee led much of the way in the 3200 and State Qualified in her very first high school track meet.
  • Boys' Field: Neitana Leung Choi - the Senior Throws Captain, won the meet with his big throw of 159' in the jav.  Nate set a new PR, and State Qualified.
  • Girls' Field: Amelia Goebel - a Sophomore in her first meet at PV, Amelia cleared 4'10" to take 4th in the high jump and State Qualify.
  • Boys' Sprint: Keaton Jorgenson - a Senior Sprint Captain, Keaton made finals with a strong prelims in the 110 hurdles and took 7th place overall.
  • Girls' Sprint: Cierra Costa - a Senior Sprint Captain, Cierra was able to make the 200 because of the delays in timing and made the best of it by placing 6th with a strong Herriman Qualifying time.

Snow Canyon JV Meet: Although most of our JV runners also competed at Hurricane, this first JV meet of the season gave many athletes to compete against other runners at their level.  And PV took full advantage of it.  As usual, our distance squad showed up strong.  We placed many in the top 10 in all three distance events.  Some of the best races came from Alex Hill and Logan Hall battling for a relay spot in an 800 showdown, Addi Baker in a strong 3200 effort in the big wind.  PV also placed well in many of the field events led by Anna Baker on the girls' side and Dillan Roberson (getting his first meet of the season in) on the guys' side.

Our athletes of the week from the Snow Canyon JV meet will be announced Tuesday at practice.

Spring Break and Panther Relays

Next week we hit Spring Break!  Awesome... but you've got to keep running/working out.  Distance runners will meet together on Monday and Wednesday at 8:00a at the high school.  Others who want to come then (throwers/jumpers) and get in a workout are welcome.  Sprinters schedule will be announce.
Getting back from Spring Break we run into our first meet - the Panther Relays.  They will be held Tuesday, March 15th at PVHS.  This is a great meet to start of the season with.  No stress, just fun relays to get the race legs under you a little.  Relay teams will get set on the Monday before the meet, so make sure you are at practice.
Later that week (Friday and Saturday, March 18/19) will be our first big meet of the year - the Hurricane Invite.  Look for more info about it after we get back from break.

Suicidal Tendencies

Some of the distance crew hit the trails on Presidents' Day.
We headed out to Santa Clara River Reserve and ran Suicidal Tendencies.

Mr. PVHS Fundraiser - Root Beer Mile

Another awesome fundraiser put on by PVXC.  This year Pine View HS is raising money for Jaden Gibby a boy with spina bifida.  Preston Warby, our Mr. PVHS candidate, organized our Root Beer Mile which saw surprises, upsets, new records, a large crowd, and a lot of money raised.  For the first time ever, we ran the race in front of the entire student body at a fire drill (a few even stuck around).  Josie Bushar became a two-time champ on the girls side and Mitch Price upset two-time defending champ Jason Hall to set a new record at 6:39.
