You’ll also need to pay your $85 participation fee before you can come out to official practice which will begin Feb. 18th (or when your season is done for winter sports).

Grades – Your 2nd quarter grades determine your eligibility for the 1st

few weeks of the season… so make sure they are good!

Winter Practice – will start up when we get back from break on Jan 6th.  The goal

of winter practice is to get you in shape for the season.  It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you be there.  Those in a winter sport, we’ll see you when your season is over… good luck in bball, wrestling, whatever.

Schedule - Winter Practice starts Jan 6th at 3:00p at PVHS

DISTANCE RUNNERSJan: everyday (if you haven’t starting running yet, do!)

You will be running 30-50 mins/day for the first few weeks starting Dec. 20th.  Check the track blog for each day (feel free to move the runs to fit your schedule).  Make sure you are running, since you will have a 6 min test when we get back from break.

Indoor Track – there are a few indoor meets up north in Jan/Feb.

If you would like to go to any, let Holt know and he’ll get you registered.  You’ll just need to get yourself there and have a place to stay.  Check out the track blog for a schedule.

OFFICIAL TRACK PRACTICE – Officially, we will start up on Tues, Feb

22nd.  We will practice each afternoon from 3:00-5:00 (some people may have morning practice).

Spring Track Schedule – will be posted on the track blog.

Gear – You will need to pre-order your gear.  Everyone must have a

singlet will be around $40 - it is the new maroon tops some people got last year; you also need one of the team shorts (prices will vary on design $20-$40) - These items will be purchased through the school.  An order will be going out in February.

May 17-22 Region Recap and STATE this week

Well now's the time... it has been a long year since Covid interupted and shut down everything. We've been very lucky/blessed (however you want to say it) to be back and have a full school year and a full season. It has been great getting to know so many new faces. Our team's future is in great hands, and we are going to do amazing things for many years to come. This week, however, the focus is on the now. After a tremendous Region meet where we accomplished nearly every one of our goals, this is the week of State.

We'd like to invite everone who can to come up at watch us. We will only have a very few limited spots on the bus to travel and stay with the team (priorities of those will be decided upon by the coaches and people informed Monday at practice). So, we know it may be tough for everyone to get up to Davis HS on Friday and Saturday on your own, but if you can... WE WANT YOU THERE; WE NEED YOU THERE; AND WE HOPE YOU CAN COME CELEBRATE A GREAT SEASON WITH THE WHOLE TEAM.

Info for tickets to State for family and non-competing athletes can be found on the post below. Tickets go on sale Tuesday and MUST be prepurchased.

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week. I'm writing this from home and left the list at school, so sorry (again) for not getting you're names on here - but we all know you're awesome. Keep nominating teammates from each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance. Nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. This recognition will come solely from your nominations, so we need them. Athlete of the Week form. Or text coach on our Remind with your nominees.

PV Track & Field communications: If you aren't receiving our track text messages, text the code @trackprs2 to 81010 to be added to our list.

Race Recaps:
Region - One of our most successful Region meets in years. We set a goal of getting qualifications; and we did! In the 1-4A divisions, we have the 3rd most participants at State (with 30 - DH 32, Santsbury 31; and only 2 teams in 5-6A have more), and we also have the 2nd most events (again just behind DH). We had some holes left in our team as athletes graduated last year, and many of you have stepped up big time to fill those spots. The Region meet started with Katie earning a spot at state in the 3200 by taking 7th and Jenna scored a point by taking 8th. In the boys' race, we had our lone Region individual champ as Scottie pulled away from the field on a very hot day to take the win. Bryan ran a huge PR (21 secs) to claim fourth and qualify for State as he broke our Freshman 3200 record. In the 110h, Heinrich made the finals (but was a late scratch due to illness). The girls' 100 heats, saw Rachel run a blazing fast time of 12.81 to hit a SQ and take 4th (scratch in finals). The boys' 100 also went very well: Kemp qualified 3rd with a SQ time of 11.25, so we scratched him in finals to guarantee our other three finalists - Nic, Maxx, and Doug - a spot at State, which they did with 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishes. In the girls' 400, Mackenzie qualified 3rd with a new PR (in teh 4x200 a huge blister opened up on her foot, but she really toughed out the 400 finals the next day to earn 7th and a SQ). Jason and Turner went into the 400 finals ranked 3rd and 7th and finished up 4th and 6th to earn SQs. Braxton ran the surprise race of the meet, taking 5th in the 300h prelims with a big PR. He carried the momentum into the finals and took 7th to earn a SQ. In the 200, Arden, Brynlee, and Rachel all made finals where Arden (3rd) and Brynlee (5th) finished in the top 7 to earn SQ marks. For the guys, Tyson and Maxx qualified for finals. Maxx earned his SQ by finishing 6th, but unfortuantely Tyson was hampered by a sprained ankle from the 4x200 and just missed his SQ placement. The girls 4x800 of Kyanne, Pyper, Adri, and Alli ran a stellar time of 9:41.33 (4th overall in the state this year) to take the Region title while setting a new school and 4A State Record. The boys ran their best time of the year to take 3rd. Both 4x200 teams earned Region titles! The girls' team of Arden, Brynlee, Mackenzie, and Rachel ran a new School Record time of 1:45.32 (2nd in 4A this year). The boys' team consisted of Nic, Dom, Tyson, and Kemp. In the girls' 1600 Adri took 3rd to earn a spot on the podium and a SQ and Kate used a killer kick to run a nice PR and take 7th to earn a SQ. In the 4x100, the girls' team of Maddy, Brynlee, Arden, and Rachel ran their best time of the year to take 2nd. For the boys, the team of Nic, Kemp, Maxx, and Doug took home a Region title with a 1st place finish. In the 800, Kyanne ran a PR to take 5th. Joining her with a SQ (her 3rd individual of the season) was Adri with a 6th place finish. In the boys' 800, Boston used a strong finishing move to slide through the pack to take 4th and earn a SQ. Our final race of the meet was the 4x400 where the girls finished a strong 3rd and the boys' team consisting of Dom, Eli, Turner, and Kemp just missed a school and region record in taking the win. For the field events, we saw many more top finishes and State Qualifiers. In the long jump, Lucca took 2nd to earn a SQ by place and mark. Kemp took 7th earning his SQ (his 3rd individual). In the disc, TJ finished off a great freshman season by making finals, but just missing out on a SQ. The boys' high jump saw some excitement as Lucca and Carter both cleared PR and SQ heights at 6-00 while taking 2nd and 6th. Maddy placed 7th in the long jump. Emma made finals in the disc and was inches from a SQ place. In the jav, Bice and Doug punched a ticket to State with 5th and 6th place throws. Peter also made it to State as he hit the SQ in the shot and took 3rd.
Overall a very succesful Region meet. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported - JV teammates, parents, family, and friends. And thanks to the athletes who set the team and teammates above themselves to sit out a meet or event to help other get qualified.
In the point totals, the girls ended up 6th in another close battle between all the region teams. The boys moved into 2nd on the final event and proved they have a very real shot at a State Title next week.

Thought of the Week: "I was in tears before the Olympic final. But when I got in to the blocks, I had to switch my mind back into the race... I decided to give it my all."
-Wayde Van Niekerk (Olympic champ and 400m world record holder)
I've used this quote before (I think), but I thought this week would be a very appropriate time to use it again. So often, when we are preparing for a big event, we are nervous, distracted, scared, pressured and on and on. And all these feelings take away from our ability to perform like we have trained, to preform like we deserve. In Van Niekerk's situation, he was saddened by the death of his coach and overwhelemed by the pressure to perform for her on the Olympic stage. For us, this week, it is probably anxiety about performing on one of our biggest stages - the State meet - where we want to perform our best, and help our team (or not let them down), and do our very best after years of hard work. It's important to recognize that these are real feelings and that everyone has them (this recognition alone can help you be resilient and cope with the feelings). These anxious and nervous feelings can make you feel inadequate, like you don't deserve to be at State, thus causing you to underperform. Two things on this: first, like I just mentioned, everyone feels this way. Do you really think that you are the only one nervous and unsure about yourself? I promis you, everyone in that event is feeling the same way, even the top seed! Second, you do deserve to be there. You earned your spot. They don't just randomly pick people to participate at State... you earned it, so be proud of it and act like it.
Once we start to get a little handle on the nerves, the next thing to do is refocus on what we are there to do. Van Niekerk says he switched his "mind back into the race... (and) decided to give it my all". This refocusing is very important. Refocus on what you're there to do. Refocus on how you want to do it. Remember that you can't control your competitors, but you can control yourself. So what do you decided to do?... hopefully, give it your all.
When Van Niekerk pulled himself back together, he was able to not only win an Olympic title, but he also set the 400m World Record... all out of lane 8! You don't have to go win or set a State Record, but you'll be amazed at what you can do when you come to peace with your nerves and refocus on the effort that you want to give.
Let's go give it our best Panthers! We are all so proud of you!

May 10 - 15 COVID TESTING and JV Region, Sentinel & BYU Invite Recaps

It's been a great journey this year. As some of you have finished up your racing this year, we want to thank you for all the hard work you've put in and for playing an imporant role on the team as teammates and examples. And for those of you who still have a little to go with Region and (hopefully) State, let's keep pushing hard and not rest on the great things we've done so far. Let's go finish it off in a way that brings us joy.

Region plans (and State plans) are coming together, but aren't finalized yet. As coaches, we still have a few things we want to move around. So feel free to check on runnercard about who is participating in what, but know that some of that may/will change. Monday at practice, we will finalize it all in our team meeting after Covid testing; so please be there. Those JV runners who won't be competing, we invite you to keep comeing out for the next two weeks, and we really invite you to come out to watch and cheer at Region!

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week. I'm sure you are all awesome, I just forgot to write it down (sorry!) . This recognition will come solely from your nominations, so we need them. Athlete of the Week form. Or text coach on our Remind with your nominees.

Race Recaps:
JV Region - Very solid meet for JV Region. We took the approach that pretty much anyone competing in events at Region wouldn't be competing at JV Region. Not all teams took that same approach; as such that bumped us down a little compared to where our JV crew has placed all year. Nonetheless, we had many great performances. Jenna and Kennis took 3rd and 7th in the 1600. Camden took 6th in the 110s. Benson took 7th in the 100. Our girls 4x800 took 1st and the boys took 2nd. The boys 4x100 took 4th. Brianna took 2nd in the 400. Eli also took 2nd in the 400 and was followed by Zack in 4th. In the 800, Macy took 7th and Laney 9th. And Porter went 9th and Elijah 10th for the boys. The girls 4x200 team took 3rd and the boys took 4th. In the 200, Benson took 4th and Payton 10th. The 4x400 had the girls take 1st and the boys take 2nd. Dominic took 3rd in the long jump and Lauren took 8th for the girls. Payton took 9th in the disc. Parker was 6th in the high jump. Hyrum took 4th in the javelin with Seedar 8th and Shan 10th. Braedon took 4th and Payton 10th in the shot. Overall, this placed the girls 6th and the boys 4th in the standings. We just want to say thanks, again, to our amazing JV athletes. Some of you are graduating and moving on - you've meant a lot to this team; thanks for you example - some of you will be coming back next year - keep working hard, and let's build on the great things from this year to have an even better one next year!

Sentinel Twilight Invite - Despite the poor weather, we had a strong meet on both the boys and girls side up at Mt. Ridge. We used this meet as a reward for our top qualifiers - thus leaving home some athletes that could have filled in to spots to round out relays and other places that could have helped our score even more. Despite this, the girls took 7th (just 9 points behind DH) and the boys took 3rd (just 1 point behind DH). Amber made finals in the jav and took 8th. On the boys' side, Bice, Doug, and Sawyer all made finals. They finished 8th, 6th, and 2nd respectively, with Saywer's big throw setting a PR and earning a State Qualifier. In the high jump, Lucca took 7th. Marcus and Dom went 1, 2 in the long jump and Dom earned his State Qualifier. Brynlee and Rachel went 3rd and 5th in the 200. Boston ran a strong 800 to take 2nd. And Adri took 8th in the girls' 800. In the 400 Jason took 6th and Alli took 2nd in their respective races. The boys' 4x100 took 5th and the girls took 2nd. Brooklyn and Kate placed 6th and 7th in the 1600. In the 4x200, the boys ran a new all divisions State Record with a time of 1:26.80. Marcus and Dom went 1, 2 in the 100 into the big wind that was blowing all day. And Arden and Brynlee battled that same wind to take 7th and 8th. In the 110s, Josh placed 6th.  And in the 4x400, the boys ran well (place and results not upload yet?), and the girls ran to a strong 2nd place finish.

BYU Invite - A few members of the team stayed up to race at BYU on Saturday. Kate and Adri ran well in the 1600. Brooklyn and Pyper ran PRs in the 800, and Katie ran well also. Alli ran her best 800 of the year and the number 2 time in Utah this year to take 2nd. And Dom had two very good 200s. In the prelims, he became the first Utah HSer to ever break 21 seconds - with a 20.96 - breaking his own State Record. Then in the finals, Dom ran a spectacular 20.73w (with a +3.6 wind) to take the win over some great competition.

Thought of the Week: "Team culture is built on faith, love and trust. But the foundation must always be gratitude. Gratitude should always be the entry point to all we do in life."
-Diljeet Taylor (BYU coach)
We've talked a lot about building a team this year... and we've done a pretty good job of it. It has been a very fun experience seeing so many of you buy into the program and buy into helping each other (and us) do great things. As coaches, we really are grateful for all of your hard work, your time commitment, you desire to improve and achieve. We're grateful that you care - so the days that aren't so great, you get upset about; and the days that are great, you are so happy about. We're grateful that you are part of this experience and that we are part of it as well. Whatever the next couple weeks bring, nothing will change the wonderful experiences we've all had. So as we approach this championship time of the season, set aside your worries and fears, and remember that none of us - coaches, teammates, parents - will love you any more or any less because of good or bumma results. We all love you because we are grateful that we've experienced part of this journey with you.

May 3 - 8 and JV @ Crimson & Dixie Invite Recaps

Another great week. We put a challenge out on Monday to go find some points and many of you stepped up and had great performances this past week. Watching a team come together is an amazing thing from a coaching perspective - it's not anything that can be forced; it's something that comes from shared experiences (the good and the bad), caring about each other, and wanting to help those around you do your best. In the past few weeks, we've really been watching this happen.

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week: Dom, Marcus, Porter, Galu, Eli, Maddy, Laney, and Lauren . Keep nominating teammates from each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance. Nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. Race Recaps:
JV @ Crimson - Another stellar meet for our JV crew! It all started with Jenna's win in the 1600 and ended with a full heat of Panthers in the 200. In between, a ton of great stuff happened. In that same 1600, Kennis took 6th and we had PRs from Sadie, Allison, and Laney. In the boys' race, Allen took 6th while breaking 5:00 for the first time. And PRs for Talmage and Porter. Camden placed 2nd in the 110h. And our girls sprint crew continues to improve with strong races from Paris, Brynlee S., Crystal, and Robin in the 100 as well as a 6th place finish in the 4x100. In the boys' 100 Maxx matched his PR to take 2nd. He was followed by Tyson in 3rd, then Dayton, Payton M., Benson, and Braxton went 9-12. In the 400 Macy took 7th. Eli and Hardman went 1-2 in the boys' 400 with very strong times. In the 300 hurdles, Robin and Makenna recorded two of our best times this year. And on the guys side, Dominic took 2nd, Camden 8th, and Parker 10th. Jenna followed up her 1600 with a 4th in the 800 and Macy and Laney took 7th and 8th. For the guys, Allen took 6th and Elijah 7th. Our boys 4x200 took the win. And Grant and Carson went 1-2 in the 3200. In the boys' 200 Tyson ended up 2nd overall; he was followed by Maxx in 3rd, Hardman 4th, Payton M. 5th, Braxton 6th, Dominic 9th, Eli 10th, Lucca 11th, and Benson 12th. Caden also had his best race of the season finishing 16th. In the girls' high jump Brynlee S. hit a PR at 4-06, and Parker took 4th with a 5-00 jump and Talmage 8th. Hannah hit a PR in the LJ and Braxton, Hardman, and Eli went 6-8th on the boys' side. In the disc, TJ took 4th followed by Nomee in 5th; Brayden hit a PR to take 11th. For the girls' Emma took 2nd with a strong throw. In the jav, Scottie's big debut was overshadowed by Shan and Isaac's 4th and 5th place finish. Solid shot throws from Nomee, Payton C. and TJ placed them 3-5th. In the overall standing, the girls took 7th but only a few points off 5th. The boys ended up winning by 48 points. Great job JV crew... the future is very bright for PV Track & Field.

Dixie Invite - A big prep meet for us. Many athletes were in multiple events and carried a heavy load this week. Like we said earlier, Monday we put out a call to go grab a few points, and many of you really stepped up. A few of the great things that happened this week: The field events continue to progress. Galu took 8th in the disc, while TJ hit a nice PR and just missed out on finals. Maddy took 6th in the long jump. Carter took 7th in the high jump with another PR. Peter took 6th in the shot with a PR. The boys jav crew went 6th, 7th and 8th with Doug and Sawyer both PRing and Bice just behind them. In the girls disc, Emma continues to improve and work her way up the region standings. Kemp took 5th in the LJ with a PR. And Brynlee S. continues to make improvements in her high jump. Our relays ran very well this weekend. The boys 4x4 took 1st while the girls took 5th. The boys 4x2 took 1st and the girls took 2nd in a season's best effort. Both the 4x1 teams took 1st with the girls getting a State Qualifying mark and the boys just missing out on the school record. And in the 4x8 the girls took 3rd and the boys took 5th. The 1600 saw PRs from Bryan and Ben. The high hurdles saw great efforts from Lauren (nearly breaking 20) and Heinrich (PRed to advance to finals, where he then State Qualified in taking 5th place). Rachel and Arden both advanced to the finals on the 100 with big PRs (Rachel just .02 off State and Arden earning her SQ, in the finals they took 4th and 8th). The depth of our boys sprint crew was on display again as Kemp took the top seed into the finals with a nice PR and Douglas narrowly beat out Maxx for the 8th spot (by thousandths) where they took 3rd and 6th. Tyson also PRed and Nic got back on the track for the first time in over a month. Alli, Brynlee J., and MacKenzie all made the finals in the 400 where Brynlee PRed taking 3rd and Alli nearly broke a school record while hitting her own PR and taking 1st. Kyanne also had a great run in the prelims and narrowly missed out on finals. In the boys' 400, Dom and Marcus ran their first open 400 of the year and State Qualified and went 1-2. Jason and Turner also ran strong races to advance to finals where they took 4th and 5th. In the 300h both Dominic and Lauren continue to push their times down. In the 200 Rachel, Arden, Brynlee all ran well taking 7-9th in the prelims with Arden and Rachel going 6th and 7th in the finals. Tyson made finals in the 200 (taking 7th), and we had strong times from Heinrich and Turner. In the 3200, Adri and Kate earned a State Qualifier with great runs. Alli won the 800 and Jenna and Laney ran PRs. For the boys Ben ran a nice PR and Zack earned a SB.

Thought of the Week: "Great players are willing to give up their own personal achievement for the achievement of the whole group."
-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
I think this guy knows what he is talking about... 3 NCAA titles (back when you couldn't compete as a Freshman or he probably would have had 4, including a 88-2 record over that time) and 6 NBA titles. He was so good and so dominant, that the NCAA changed the rules (banning the dunk) for over 10 years because no one could stop him. He was also a 19 time All-Star and 6 time MVP. So even though he is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, he fully bought in to TEAM game. He learned at a young age - most likely under legendary coach John Wooden - that putting the TEAM first will always will bring about great results. Why? Probably more than anything else is because it creates a culture of caring. When we care about others, we want to do great things for them. The result? Great TEAM success. A secondary result is usually huge improvements and success for the individual as well (look at how great Kareem was even while putting his TEAM first). So what does this mean for us? Think about how willing you are to put the TEAM first. Are you getting to practice everyday because the TEAM needs you? Are you getting good sleep, eating and hydrating well because the TEAM needs you? Do you set aside some of your own wants, entertainment, and so on because the TEAM needs you? Are you taking care of all your school stuff because the TEAM needs you? If you are struggling in any of these areas, see if there's some way to improve (better yet, see if there is some way that TEAMmates can help you improve as you share with them some of your weakness and look for their strengths to help you out).

April 26 - May 1 and JV @ SC, Tiger Trials & Cedar Invite Recaps, and COVID TESTING MONDAY

I've left this past week with just a lot of positive vibes... are you feeling it too? The team is blending, people are improving, our goals are coming into sight. It's been a very fun season so far. Not to say things are going perfect. We're dealing with some key injuries right now, sometimes a performances doesn't match our effort, and its often hard to balance out practice, homework, and all the other demands of life. But we'll mention those downs (and the ups that accompany them) later with our thought. Parents, we want to say thanks for all your support - not only for your athlete, but for the team. As a parent myself, I know its easy to develop a tunnel-vision and think only of what your son/daughter is doing and kind of forget that they are part of a bigger TEAM vision that we are working on. So thanks for looking to support not only your athlete, but also the support of the TEAM you show when you are all-in to your kid being involved and at practice and at meets helping the whole TEAM accomplish our goals. And athletes, the same thing to you. It is so cool to see so many of you set aside yourself to work for our TEAM goals. Not to say that you aren't pushing yourself, but rather, you are pushing yourself keeping in mind how important each and everyone of you are to what we are continually working to build at Pine View Track and Field. Let's have another great week coming up!

Athletes of the Week: We had a ton of great nominees last week. Keep nominating teammates from each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance. Nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. A few (very few) athletes will stay up and run at BYU on Saturday. Sorry we don't have a solid idea on who's competing at BYU; we are waiting for them to finalize their schedule.

Race Recaps:
JV @ SC - Have we mentioned that our JV crew is really good?! Another great meet as we develop our younger athletes and show off our depth. In the 1600 Madeline broke 6:00 for the first time and took 3rd. Jenna took 7th and Allison 10th. Allen continues to show great improvement and took 5th followed by Gaige and Talmage in 8th and 9th. Braxton continues to show he's one of the top freshmen hurdlers in the region with a 2nd place in the 110s. Maxx took the win in the 100s in a close finish over Doug running his first timed race. Benson was our 3rd Panther in the top 10 with an 8th place finish. In the 4x800 both the guys and girls took 2nd. The ladies in the 4x100 took 7th and the guys ran well and took 1st. Macy placed 7th in the 400 and the girls' side and Zack J. did the same for the boys with a big PR. Dom H. ran a strong 3rd in his first 300h. In the 800 our top finisher was Laney with an 8th place finish. While Eli and Porter took 6th and 9th with nice PRs for the boys. Our boys 4x200 took home the win. And Carson and Coleman went 2-3 in the 3200. Benson had a very strong 200 to take 2nd and was followed in the top 10 by Doug in 5th, Payton in 7th, and Eli in 10th. Dom H. took home another W in the LJ. In the jav, Daytona and Amber took 4th and 8th, and Sawyer had a great first meet to take first with a throw of over 146'. The trio of Brodie, TJ and Franklin all threw within 3" of each other to take 4th-6th. The rest of the throws crew keeps improving as well. The boys shot had TJ place 2nd and Nomee 4th. Nomee looked even better in the disc with a first place finish and a throw over 100'. Barlow had a good throw as well to take 6th. Lali placed 10th in the shot and 12th in the disc. Talmage cleared 5' in the HJ for the first time to take 9th. Hannah had a 10th place jump in the LJ. Other strong performances included Emma and Makenna's continued improvement in the 300h and Paris' strong races in the 100 and 200. Overall, the boys depth led them to another JV win scoring 159 points to Hurricane's (2nd) 102. The girls were 6th among the region teams.

Orem Tiger Trial - We split our Varsity squad between two meets this weekend. Some of the top athletes headed to the Orem Tiger Trials while the rest of team went to Cedar. Rachel had a PR in the 100 and 200. Madi and Arden also ran well. Marcus and Dom went 1st and 2nd in the 100 with wind legal 10.63 and 10.69 times. Adri ran the fastest time of our girls 1600 crew placing 15th and Boston led our boys team. Alli had a top 10 finish in the 400 and Jason recorded our best boys' time. Alli ran a patient race in a fiesty 800 to take the win. Speaking of fiesty 800s, Zack survived his wicked wipe out so that was good. Our girls 4x800 team of Kyanne, Pyper, Adri, and Alli took 4th while setting a new school record. And the girls 4x100 team of Maddy, Rachel, MacKenzie, and Arden took 6th. In the LJ, Marcus took 2nd with the 2nd best performance in PV history recording 5 jumps over 22' including a 22-06. Kemp also went over 20' for the first time. Maddy earned her State Q with a 4th place jump of 16-08. The highlight of the day was the boys' 200. Kemp earned his SQ with a 23.04 and Dom and Marcus ran the two fastest times in Utah history with wind legal 21.01 and 21.10 times! In running the current #2 and #4 times in the nation, Dom and Marcus both went under the previous all-time Utah record of 21.12.

Cedar Invite - Meanwhile in a very windy Cedar, fast times were hard to come by, but we still had some great performances. The performance of the day was earned by Nalu with his State Qualifying 138'04" throw and 2nd place finish in the disc! Other noteable performances were Allison's 10th place finish in the open 1600 and Ben's 4th place in the boys event; Eli took 5th and Tyson 9th in the open 400; Tyson ran a strong 2nd in the open 200 (into an insane 10.3 headwind - over 23 mph); Kennis battled the wind for 2 miles to place 5th and Bentley did the same for a 10th place finish; Our girls 4x800 team placed 4th; the boys 4x100 took 6th. Dom H. took 4th in the open LJ; Nalu hit a big PR in the shot to take 2nd in the open; Payton earned a 7th place in the open disc with his 100+' throw; and Emma and Daytona took 8th and 10th in the open jav; and Carter's HJ tied for 5th.

Alumni Update: Julien got back on the track with his first mile race ever for DSU.

Thought of the Week: "Sometimes the running gods smile on us and sometimes they abandon us in our time of need! But we rise the next morning regardless... lace up our shoes and get out the door. The only certainty is that consistency will lead to eventual excellence."
-Ed Eyestone (BYU track and XC coach, multiple Olympian, and former national record holder)
Don't get caught up on the idea of "the running gods" (especially with a BYU guy saying it!)... what he is saying is that sometimes things work out and we perform awesome and sometimes we don't. No matter - the key thing is to keep on pushing. Because in reality the thing that you can control is how hard you are working. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THAT HARD WORK IS *CONSISTENCY*. Many people can work hard for a day, a week, or even a month. But are you going to keep working hard for a full season, multiple seasons, in the off-season, even when injuries seem to be giving you huge setbacks or you feel like you just aren't making any progress and everyone else is? That's where the true champions are born. No one achieved any greatness (in anything) who didn't have to overcome and learn from some adversity first. So the question for you is... are you going to get up tomorrow and be ready to work, are you going to work all week, for the next month until Region and State, beyond? If the answer is "yes" to all of those questions, I promise (and so does Coach Eyestone) it "will lead to eventual excellence".

Apr. 19-24 DH Invite Recap

What a great week. We started with a ton of celebrations for PRs, Athletes of the Week, and State Qualifiers and then ended the week with our best meet of the season. In between, we had an excellent youth meet - thanks for all your help crew! - and some very productive practices. Let's all work to keep this momentum going as we head into our final month of the season. Remember our list of "things that will help the team" from last week and do your best to work on a few of those areas this week as we prepare for a JV meet at SC and splitting our squad between two invites this weekend - Tiger Trials in Orem on Fri/Sat and Cedar on Saturday. We will not be able to finalize who is traveling to Orem and Cedar until Wednesday (I know this is a pain, sorry) because both meets are limiting the number of athletes who attend by taking the top qualifiers - so our participants depend on who else is registering from other schools. Please know for sure on Monday (at the team meeting right after school) if there may be limits on your participations this week (if we sign you up for events and you get into them, you must participate).

Drink water, sleep, stay on top of school work... Keep the body healthy and the mind healthy.

Athletes of the Week: Let's keep nominating teammates from each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance. Nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. Race Recaps:
DHells Invite - Hopefully a season develops just like our is... where we put a lot of hard work in early in the season and by now we start seeing the times drop and the marks grow. And in the next few weeks we are going to continue to see great progress. It really was an impressive meet for the Panthers, and even though we didn't go all-in with every event (pulling some people to qualify relays and getting some of our JV runners some Varsity experience) the team still placed very well. Both the 4x200s got us started off in spectacular fashion by setting STATE RECORDS! The girls team of Rachel, Brynlee, Arden and Alli ran a time of 1:49.13 and narrowly beat DH despite the officals not allowing our 3rd runner to cut in and forcing us to run an extra 200 in lane 5. The boys team of Maxx, Marcus, Kemp and Dom ran a state leading time and record time of 1:29.26. In the boys 3200 Scottie took 5th. It was great to get Heinrich back and have him have a great meet; his best performance was a big PR and 7th place finish in the 110h. In the 100, Brynlee took 5th and got her State Qualifier! We also saw big PRs from Arden and Madi. In the boys 100, Kemp continue to have a great season with his 4th place finish. Brianna had a big PR in her 400. On the boys side Turner had his best race of the season and took 4th. Boston also had a solid first 400 of the season. We also saw strong races from Eli, Dominic and Hardman. Our boys 4x800 team took 2nd with Hyrum, Allen, Gianno and Carson. Our boys 4x100 Freshman crew ran a strong race to place 6th. In the 800, Adri ran a great race and placed 3rd and leading the whole squad to PRs or SBs: Kyanne 6th (PR), Pyper 8th (SB), Jenna (SB), Macy (PR), Laney (PR). The boys 800 crew also ran very well with Jason PRing in 4th, Boston 6th, Ben (PR), Zack (SB), Elijah (PR), and Porter (PR). Arden had a strong 200 and MacKenzie ran a big PR. Maybe Heinrich's best performance was actually his 200 where he place 5th. The girls distance crew continued to be a strength with a solid showing in the 1600: Brooklyn 3rd, Kate 4th (one of the top Freshman times in the entire state), and Brinley 7th. Bryan, likewise, ran a very good Freshman time (breaking 4:50 for the first time) to take 8th. Our final track event was another big success as both 4x400 teams race very good State Qualifying times! The girls team of Alli, MacKenzie, Adri and Brynlee ran a 4:06 for the victory. And the boys team of Marcus, Dom, Turner and Jason ran a 3:26 also for the win. We also saw a lot of growth in the field events this week. Marcus and Dom hit the LJ for the first time and did very well. Dom just missed a SQ and placed 7th. Marcus not only got his State Qualifier, but he also won the event with a 21+ foot jump. Kemp continued to PR and took 8th while just missing a SQ mark. Heinrich and Lucca also had nice jumps. Madi, also, just missed a SQ but hit a new PR to take 2nd in the LJ. For the first time this season, we had a girl in the disc at an invite and Emma threw well. Our guys disc crew of Nalu, TJ and Nomee continue to move up the region rankings. Doug placed 7th in the jav, and Emma and Amber had solid 90+ foot throws. In the high jump, Carter hit a PR to place 6th. Overall, this helped the boys take 2nd and the girls to take a close 4th place finish in the final results.

Alumni Update: Jessica Hill competed at the ISU Invite in the 5000 and set a personal best this past weekend! Great job Jess.

Thought of the Week: "The mind is the athlete."
-Bryce Courtenay, The Power of One
First off, this is a good show (watch it if you've never seen it). For us, though, this quote ties into something we are seeing over and over again. So many of you are really putting in great work (maybe we could do a little better at not missing practice here and there) and are physically ready to get great marks and times. Besides the physical, the other very important step to accomplishing great things is to figure out the mind. In fact, I might argue that the mind is even more important than the body in being our very best because if we are not able to unlock the mind, we can never unlock the body. But sometimes we are overthinking things or getting in our own ways as we try to do our best. The place to train the mind is at practice. Train yourself to push through the pain. Train yourself to now the correct movements and body positions. Train yourself to know that you can do more than you thought possible. Then in the meets, the time is to get out of our own way - don't overthink things and just let it all go and flow.

On the girls side we had a lot of great marks as well. Robin PRed in the 100. Macy hit a Season's Best (SB) in the 800. Jacee with a PR in the disc. Lali with a PR in the disc and shot (broken at Hurr). Laney in the 800. Morgan PRed in the 200. Jessica in the 200. Brynlee in the 100. Sadie for the 1600. Paris in both the 100 and 200. Makenna in the 100 and 300h. And Emma in the 300h (broken at Hurr).
A lot of great performances and personal records and season's best. The boys came out of the meet with a big team victory.

Hurricane Invite - The Hurricane Invite saw many more strong performances for our Varsity crew. Adri took 5th in the 1600 with a new personal record. Boston took 3rd in the 1600. Marcus K. advanced to the 100 final where he placed 3rd. Alli took the top time into the 400 finals with a State Qualifying mark and finshed 2nd overall. The girls 4x800 crew took 5th and the boys took 7th. Rachel placed 6th in the 200. And Marcus K. continued his exceptional meet by taking 3rd in the 200 and narrowly missing a State time. We had two girls scoring in the 3200 with Brooklyn taking 6th and Kate running a monster PR to take 8th. Bryan also ran a PR in his 5th place finish in the boys 3200. Our boys 4x100 placed 5th as well as the boys 4x200. Alli won the 800 and Adri placed 5th. The girls ran a strong 4x400 to take 2nd and the boys also ran well taking 4th. We had some solid long jumping on both sides with Marcus K. advancing to the final and Luca and Dominic barely missing out. And on the girls side both Madi (6th) and MacKenzie (9th) made the final. Bice and Doug went a strong 4th and 5th place in the jav. And in the shot, TJ made the finals (taking 8th) and earned the 2nd furthest shot put by a freshman in Utah as of now. Luca tied for 8th in the high jump. Nalu took 7th in the disc. And Dayton took 8th in the jav with a big PR. Overall the boys took 6th and the girls placed 4th despite both not placing full events and full teams with a few people out with injuries and things.

Through both meets, we continue to see big improvements. Keep pushing yourself and keep encouraging your teammates to be at practice and push themselves. It is a lot of fun to see so many of you accomplishing great things.

Alumni Update: Alex Hill competed unattached in the 800 at the USU Aggie Invite this weekend. In his first race in three years, Alex won the slow heat to take 4th overall with a great time of 1:57.

Thought of the Week: A list of ideas presented by Jon Gordon -
7 Things that will hurt your team:
  1. Energy Vampires
  2. Complaining
  3. Ego
  4. Selfishness
  5. Jealousy
  6. Resentment
  7. Pessimism
7 Things that will help your team:
  1. Love
  2. Encouragment
  3. Vulnerability
  4. Selflessness
  5. Unity
  6. Communication
  7. Optimism

This is a great list of ideas. How are you doing with these traits? Are there any characteristics on the "hurt" column that you could work to lessen and remove from your attitude? And on the "help side", are there some areas that you are strong at and have been a good example, or even things that you could try and improve a little bit at to help us all reach our team and individual goals?

Apr. 5-10 Hurricane JV Recap

It has definitely been a busy few weeks. Between our invite, JV meets, days off of school for Spring Break and Easter, and Covid testing, a lot has been going on and the season has been moving right along. This week, we'll have another JV meet and an invite, so things will continue to be just as busy. And like we've tried to emphasize at practice, the key is for each of you to be at practice each day and working hard. Already we've seen a lot of growth and improvement from many of you and from our team. As we keep pushing, remember the team aspect of track (which sometimes gets lost as we are out doing our own thing with our own discipline groups each day). Our quote this week will focus on this idea, so make sure you take a look at it.

Athletes of the Week: This would be a great week to get a few of our JV athletes some recognition as we had the JV meet at Hurricane. So for each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance, nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. This recognition will come solely from your nominations, so we need them. Athlete of the Week form. Or text coach on our Remind with your nominees.

Race Recaps:
Hurricane JV - It was great to get our first full JV meet in - although the wind was really blowing and it was plenty cold! Kennis and Madeline started us our with a 4th and 5th place finish in the girls 1600. Other girls and guys distance runners put in great efforts in the very windy conditions. Camden ran a strong 110h for a 6th place finish and Aiden took 9th. We had some good times in the girls 100. And in the boys race, 4 Panthers placed in the top 10 with Maxx 2nd, Dayton 7th, Braxton 9th and Benson 10th. Our sprint girls put together a solid effort in the 4x100 to take 5th, and our Freshmen boys looked strong taking first in their 4x100. In the 400, Macy pushed through the wind to a 4th place finish, and on the boys side, Eli ran a good race to take 3rd. The 300h saw Emma taking 9th and Parker and Camden taking 8th and 9th for the boys. Madeline had a strong 800 and placed 4th while Laney took 10th. In the 3200, Kate, Katie, and Kennis ran as a good pack for parts of the race and took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. In the boys race, Zak B. battled for the lead throughout and ended up 2nd with Gaige 5th and Carson 7th. In the boys 200 Maxx placed 5th and Braxton 9th. In the field events, Brynlee S. had a good start to the season in her high jump placing 4th with a mark of 4-4. Franklin had another good outing in the jav and took 2nd with Brodie hitting an excellent 4th. On the girls side, Morgan placed 10th in the jav. In the shot, Peter, Vai, and Braedon got their first meet in for the season and took 1st, 6th, and 7th while Brodie placed 10th. In the girls shot, Lali got a good PR to take 7th. Our freshmen throwers did well in the disc as well as TJ led our team with a 3rd place throw. He was followed by Vai and Peter in 7th and 10th. Overall the boys place 4th in a very close competion for the team title and the girls placed 5th.

Alumni Update: Jessica competed for Weber St. again in the 5000 this past weekend and broke 19:00 at the UVU meet. She's doing a great job as she adjusts to the rigours of collegiate distance running.

Thought of the Week: "100% of myself is nothing compared to one percent of the whole team."
-Conner Mantz
Some of you know I am huge fanboy of Conner. He is a distance runner runner from Logan who ran at Sky View and now runs at BYU where just a couple weeks ago won the NCAA Cross Country individual national championship (and was the top runner on their mens national championship team last year). This weekend, he ran the 5000 at the newly renovated and historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon (basically the center of American distance running). Anyway... although he took second in the race, being passed in the final lap, he talked about how important it was to have teammates their to help him as he reached his goal of running an Olympic Trials qualifying mark in the race. Like I mentioned earlier, it is so easy to see track and field as an individual sport - we train with our own groups, often we are compteting on our own, and many times we don't even have people cheering us on in our events. However, those who really know, understand that track and field is absolutely a team sport. We rely on our teammates to help us get better in practice. We need a team to score good points in a meet. We need the competition of teammates to push us to do our best. We find the best in ourselves when we know teammates are counting on us (I often tell the story about how I hate getting up in the morning, but I've never missed a morning practice because I know the team is going to be there and I don't want to let them down). Everything in this life is meant to made better by "teammates" and when we truly understand that others make us better and we make all those around us better, we can all accomplish greater things together.
