May 17-22 Region Recap and STATE this week

Well now's the time... it has been a long year since Covid interupted and shut down everything. We've been very lucky/blessed (however you want to say it) to be back and have a full school year and a full season. It has been great getting to know so many new faces. Our team's future is in great hands, and we are going to do amazing things for many years to come. This week, however, the focus is on the now. After a tremendous Region meet where we accomplished nearly every one of our goals, this is the week of State.

We'd like to invite everone who can to come up at watch us. We will only have a very few limited spots on the bus to travel and stay with the team (priorities of those will be decided upon by the coaches and people informed Monday at practice). So, we know it may be tough for everyone to get up to Davis HS on Friday and Saturday on your own, but if you can... WE WANT YOU THERE; WE NEED YOU THERE; AND WE HOPE YOU CAN COME CELEBRATE A GREAT SEASON WITH THE WHOLE TEAM.

Info for tickets to State for family and non-competing athletes can be found on the post below. Tickets go on sale Tuesday and MUST be prepurchased.

Athletes of the Week: Congrats to all our Athletes of the Week from last week. I'm writing this from home and left the list at school, so sorry (again) for not getting you're names on here - but we all know you're awesome. Keep nominating teammates from each discipline: Sprint, Field, and Distance. Nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. This recognition will come solely from your nominations, so we need them. Athlete of the Week form. Or text coach on our Remind with your nominees.

PV Track & Field communications: If you aren't receiving our track text messages, text the code @trackprs2 to 81010 to be added to our list.

Race Recaps:
Region - One of our most successful Region meets in years. We set a goal of getting qualifications; and we did! In the 1-4A divisions, we have the 3rd most participants at State (with 30 - DH 32, Santsbury 31; and only 2 teams in 5-6A have more), and we also have the 2nd most events (again just behind DH). We had some holes left in our team as athletes graduated last year, and many of you have stepped up big time to fill those spots. The Region meet started with Katie earning a spot at state in the 3200 by taking 7th and Jenna scored a point by taking 8th. In the boys' race, we had our lone Region individual champ as Scottie pulled away from the field on a very hot day to take the win. Bryan ran a huge PR (21 secs) to claim fourth and qualify for State as he broke our Freshman 3200 record. In the 110h, Heinrich made the finals (but was a late scratch due to illness). The girls' 100 heats, saw Rachel run a blazing fast time of 12.81 to hit a SQ and take 4th (scratch in finals). The boys' 100 also went very well: Kemp qualified 3rd with a SQ time of 11.25, so we scratched him in finals to guarantee our other three finalists - Nic, Maxx, and Doug - a spot at State, which they did with 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishes. In the girls' 400, Mackenzie qualified 3rd with a new PR (in teh 4x200 a huge blister opened up on her foot, but she really toughed out the 400 finals the next day to earn 7th and a SQ). Jason and Turner went into the 400 finals ranked 3rd and 7th and finished up 4th and 6th to earn SQs. Braxton ran the surprise race of the meet, taking 5th in the 300h prelims with a big PR. He carried the momentum into the finals and took 7th to earn a SQ. In the 200, Arden, Brynlee, and Rachel all made finals where Arden (3rd) and Brynlee (5th) finished in the top 7 to earn SQ marks. For the guys, Tyson and Maxx qualified for finals. Maxx earned his SQ by finishing 6th, but unfortuantely Tyson was hampered by a sprained ankle from the 4x200 and just missed his SQ placement. The girls 4x800 of Kyanne, Pyper, Adri, and Alli ran a stellar time of 9:41.33 (4th overall in the state this year) to take the Region title while setting a new school and 4A State Record. The boys ran their best time of the year to take 3rd. Both 4x200 teams earned Region titles! The girls' team of Arden, Brynlee, Mackenzie, and Rachel ran a new School Record time of 1:45.32 (2nd in 4A this year). The boys' team consisted of Nic, Dom, Tyson, and Kemp. In the girls' 1600 Adri took 3rd to earn a spot on the podium and a SQ and Kate used a killer kick to run a nice PR and take 7th to earn a SQ. In the 4x100, the girls' team of Maddy, Brynlee, Arden, and Rachel ran their best time of the year to take 2nd. For the boys, the team of Nic, Kemp, Maxx, and Doug took home a Region title with a 1st place finish. In the 800, Kyanne ran a PR to take 5th. Joining her with a SQ (her 3rd individual of the season) was Adri with a 6th place finish. In the boys' 800, Boston used a strong finishing move to slide through the pack to take 4th and earn a SQ. Our final race of the meet was the 4x400 where the girls finished a strong 3rd and the boys' team consisting of Dom, Eli, Turner, and Kemp just missed a school and region record in taking the win. For the field events, we saw many more top finishes and State Qualifiers. In the long jump, Lucca took 2nd to earn a SQ by place and mark. Kemp took 7th earning his SQ (his 3rd individual). In the disc, TJ finished off a great freshman season by making finals, but just missing out on a SQ. The boys' high jump saw some excitement as Lucca and Carter both cleared PR and SQ heights at 6-00 while taking 2nd and 6th. Maddy placed 7th in the long jump. Emma made finals in the disc and was inches from a SQ place. In the jav, Bice and Doug punched a ticket to State with 5th and 6th place throws. Peter also made it to State as he hit the SQ in the shot and took 3rd.
Overall a very succesful Region meet. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported - JV teammates, parents, family, and friends. And thanks to the athletes who set the team and teammates above themselves to sit out a meet or event to help other get qualified.
In the point totals, the girls ended up 6th in another close battle between all the region teams. The boys moved into 2nd on the final event and proved they have a very real shot at a State Title next week.

Thought of the Week: "I was in tears before the Olympic final. But when I got in to the blocks, I had to switch my mind back into the race... I decided to give it my all."
-Wayde Van Niekerk (Olympic champ and 400m world record holder)
I've used this quote before (I think), but I thought this week would be a very appropriate time to use it again. So often, when we are preparing for a big event, we are nervous, distracted, scared, pressured and on and on. And all these feelings take away from our ability to perform like we have trained, to preform like we deserve. In Van Niekerk's situation, he was saddened by the death of his coach and overwhelemed by the pressure to perform for her on the Olympic stage. For us, this week, it is probably anxiety about performing on one of our biggest stages - the State meet - where we want to perform our best, and help our team (or not let them down), and do our very best after years of hard work. It's important to recognize that these are real feelings and that everyone has them (this recognition alone can help you be resilient and cope with the feelings). These anxious and nervous feelings can make you feel inadequate, like you don't deserve to be at State, thus causing you to underperform. Two things on this: first, like I just mentioned, everyone feels this way. Do you really think that you are the only one nervous and unsure about yourself? I promis you, everyone in that event is feeling the same way, even the top seed! Second, you do deserve to be there. You earned your spot. They don't just randomly pick people to participate at State... you earned it, so be proud of it and act like it.
Once we start to get a little handle on the nerves, the next thing to do is refocus on what we are there to do. Van Niekerk says he switched his "mind back into the race... (and) decided to give it my all". This refocusing is very important. Refocus on what you're there to do. Refocus on how you want to do it. Remember that you can't control your competitors, but you can control yourself. So what do you decided to do?... hopefully, give it your all.
When Van Niekerk pulled himself back together, he was able to not only win an Olympic title, but he also set the 400m World Record... all out of lane 8! You don't have to go win or set a State Record, but you'll be amazed at what you can do when you come to peace with your nerves and refocus on the effort that you want to give.
Let's go give it our best Panthers! We are all so proud of you!
