March 28 - April 2

Just another huge thanks to everyone in pulling all the everything together for the Invite: Parents and family - your help with concession, the coaches' dinner (which was a huge hit!), those who helped at the timing both, and those who ran events; Athletes - your work at the field events, helping with the hurdles, moving blocks, doing the finish shoot, clean up, announcing,, bringing gatorades, timing; and all the other stuff that was needed was great. Although the meet was huge (1496 athletes and nearly 3000 participations) we pulled it off with only a few hiccups and with many, many compliments. Now on to the next order of business... continuing to develop our team and our own selves to be the best we can be this year and beyond.

Thought of the Week: "What keeps your daily runs from bein monotonous? How do you keep from getting too down during injuries? How can I hold myself responsible during tough workouts? Who is there to make me feel like what I'm doing is worthwhile? TEAMMATES. 100% TEAMMATES."
-@hansonsrun
Why do we do anything we do? We enjoy being around others who are also doing it and they help us be our best selves. Teammates are what it is all about. Keep doing the things that make you a great teammate and work to cut out those things that distract you from being a great teammate. For each of us those are different things - some might be great at getting to practice, others at getting out and cheering teammates on. Yet others may struggle at those very same things. Together we can accentuate the good and work toward eliminating the struggles. Then, together, we can achieve what we never thought possible.

Check out the spring schedule if you haven't yet.

Youth Club Info: Our MS Developmental Track and Field Clinic is going strong. This group meets Monday and Thursday at 3:00a-4:15('ish) and is open to all PV students in 6th-8th grades. We will focus on each different track and field event and give athletes an opportunity to work with the coaches of each specialty to see what our middle school athletes may want to pursue. We will meet throughout the spring and participate and host multiple track meets. Thought of the Week: "I used to go into races with 'something to prove' and I realized that, for me, it was a big insecurity issue. Now I go into races believing what I know I can be and that I can allow everyone else to shine with me."
-Nico Montanez
This is a pretty cool idea... I think often we are so worried about being the best and proving that we are so good or whatever, that those thoughts end up being a block to us doing our best. When we are able to let that type of thinking go and just focus on being our best self, trusting the hard work and training that we've done, and realizing that it's great if others do well because that helps push us even more... when we are able to have a mindset shift, we can really become better athletes and people.

March 14-19

What a great start to the season! The Panther Relays were a lot of fun, and then we had a great meet at SC. This is a pretty big week now as we head into what could be called "Commitment Week". Most of the team has gotten into a race/event or two and can now start building some individual goals and our team has had the opportunity to see what we can do if we work hard, support each other, and all strive to really be a part of this track thing. So as we enter Spring Break, we look to each of you to be committed to what you want to become this season and what we want our team to become. If you are in town, let's be to practice. If you are out of town, do your very best to get your workouts in (even if it just some sort of practice - a run, work in a weight room, sprints up and down the street or the beach, whatever... something that will help you and the team keep pushing to be our best).

Schedule for the Week:
  • Distance Crew: PM - Mon-Fri - 8:00a at PVHS, Sat - TBA / this week's workouts
  • Sprint Crews and Jumpers: Mon-Fri - 9:00a at PVHS
  • Throwers: Mon-Fri - 9:00a at PVHS
Upcoming Events:

Pine View Invite (help):
SPONSORS - We need to get about 10 more sponsors for the Invite to be able to reach our goal of purchasing some massage therapy guns for the team. One last push for sponsors... we can turn them in on Monday, so if you know of any company/family/group that would like to sponsor, get Holt the info NOW!. Sponsorship papers

PARENT HELP - Those that shared they are willing to help, THANK YOU. We will get info and sign ups set up this week. We would like to get all our help lined out this week. Anyone else that can help in the concessions, help with events and implement weigh-ins, and help with the Coaches' meals let Coach know. We will give you any training you might need and nothing will be too strenuous. Please sign up to help. (Sign up info will be sent out soon.)

Race Reports:
Panther Relays - This was a great first meet of the year. It was a bit cold, but a fun opportunity to get out and participate in a few events against other teams in a low-stress environment. Thanks everyone that showed up.

Snow Canyon Invite - The team did very well at the SC Invite this weekend. Although we were missing a few key people on both the girls and guys teams, we still had a lot of finalists and State Qualifiers (SQ). And, of course, we had a lot of PRs (Personal Records). The meet started out with Adri's strong run in the 1600 taking 8th place. In the boys' 1600, Trey earned a SQ with a great time of 4:24.50. Bridger also had a great race and was the 3rd fastest Freshman in the meet. In the girls 100, our sprint crew ran very solid - Jade earned a SQ in her first race and made it to finals where she placed 8th. Brynlee J. and Rachel A. also had strong runs. Marcus looked excellent in his first race and earned a SQ and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD in the prelims, but then topped that time with a 10.58 in winning the finals on Saturday. Turner, Maxx, and Jacob ran well, also. Brynlee J. qualified 4th in the 400 and improved up to 3rd in the finals in a SQ level performance. Claire, Rachel M., and Adri also had great runs. Turner took 3rd in the prelims and finals of the 400 and is setting himself up as the top 400 guy in 4A. in the 300h, Tori just missed out on finals with a tremendous improvement in the first week of racing. Brynlee S. and Lauren had good runs as well. Braxton ran a good starting 300h for the guys. In the 200, Brynlee J. missed out on finals by just one spot. The rest of the girls (Rachel A., Jade, Rachel M., Tori, and Claire) all really ran well, too. Marcus again took the top spot in the 200 prelims and finals and earned another SQ. Jacob and Turner weren't too far off finals spots either. In the 3200, Brook ran a good race as our sole representative to take 10th. Trey once again wowed with a NEW SCHOOL RECORD in a time of 9:27.41 in earning a SQ. Our girls 800 crew ran well with Adri taking 4th, Katie 8th, and Kyanne in 12th. Zack put up a good time in the guys' race to be our top finisher. Our young boys high jump crew saw good results from Spencer B. and Cayson. The girls did great with Rachel M. and Tori clearing 5-00 to earn SQs. Isi wasn't far off at 4-8, and Brynlee S. cleared 4-6. Robin hit a nice PR in the LJ to be our top finisher at over 14 feet. In the discus, June had a good start to the season with the 3rd furthest throw in our Region. June also led the team in javelin. In the girls' shot put, Tea had our top mark and the top Freshman mark in the entire meet. The boys' shot had a strong Panther presence as Peter and TJ both SQed in taking 3rd and 5th. TJ also recorded our top long jump mark on the guys' team. Not to take it easy, TJ then followed up with some massive throws in the disc to earn a SQ and place 3rd. Galu was right behind in earning his own SQ and taking 5th. To round out our throwing dominance, Sawyer had a great javelin to take 5th and collect another Panther SQ. Overall the girls placed 14th out of 30 scoring teams (this is a placement that will without a doubt be improved on a ton throughout the year... we are a very good team!) and the guys ended up 2nd (so, not to shabby!). This was a tremendous start to the season. With out top performers and strong solid depth to support the team, we are going to be able to do a lot of great things this year.

Thought of the Week: "Commitment is an act, not a word."
-Jean-Paul Sartre
A lot of people like to talk about how good they could be and how they could set records or do this or that. But the reality is that very few actually will do the work needed to accomplish those things. Working hard is... well hard. It is sometimes painful. It is sometimes scary to think you might not actually be as good as you hope. It requires dedication. It requires humility to realize you have room to grow. And because of this, way more people talk than act. And because of this, very few people actually become improve and become great at something. We call this week "Commitment Week" because a lot of you are gone. And since school is out, it is easy to just miss practice. It is easy to stay up late. It is easy to sleep in. It is easy to just say you want to do good. But are you ready to act? We'll see this week.

Athletes of the Week:
Sprint -
Marcus (Senior) set a new school record in the 100m in prelims and then broke it in finals on his way to a 100 championship at the SC Invite. He also won the 200m.
Jade (Freshman) earned a state qualifier in her 100m prelims at took 8th place in the finals in her first track meet.
Field -
Rachel M. (Junior) earned a state qualifier in her high jump with a mark of 5-00.
Tori (Freshman) also earned a state qualifier in her high jump with a mark of 5-00.
TJ (Sophomore) had a tremendous meet at SC with two state qualifiers and top five finishes in the discus and javelin while also recording our top team mark in the long jump.
Distance -
Trey (Junior) had our top distance meet in years with a 1600m state qualifier and a 3200 state qualifier and a new school record all in his first track meet ever.
Adri (Junior) record two top 8 finishes with a 8th in the 1600 and a 4th in the 800.

Check out the spring schedule if you haven't yet. A couple start times changed in the last few days.

Youth Club Info: Our MS Developmental Track and Field Clinic is going strong. This group meets Monday and Thursday at 3:00a-4:15('ish) and is open to all PV students in 6th-8th grades. Things get pretty busy from here on out, so make sure you are doing your best to plan and schedule everything. And let's put a big focus on being at practice each day. We have a very good team on both the girls and guys side. Ultimately, we'll be as good as the work you put in right now.

Thought of the Week: "The journey is the reward."
-Tao expression
"Like is a journey, travel it well."
-unknown
A couple thoughts about journeys. We are all starting this journey of a track and field season together and it's an exciting time. Sometimes, though, we forget about the journey and only focus on the end result. Maybe it's to run a certain time or throw a certain distance. Maybe the goal is to win a title or something else like that. And those are all great goals and awesome things to strive for. But we must all remember that no only is the journey the thing that will get us there, but enjoying that journey is where true joy comes from. So let's have a great week; and at practice each day and at our meets, lets have some fun, meet new people, put in our best efforts, and enjoy what we are doing.

PV Track & Field communications: You already know about this blog since you are here. Info will be posted on here every week through the season (usually updated Sunday afternoon). If you aren't receiving our track text messages, text the code @trackprs2 to 81010 to be added to our list.
PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO WITH ANYONE/EVERYONE THAT YOU THINK MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN TRACK - especially Freshmen. Even if you think they are on the texts or might look at this blog, share with them the link so they for sure know that things are starting up.

Check out the spring schedule if you haven't yet. A couple start times changed in the last few days.

Uniform Info

We've got meets coming up... We better get uniforms out!

So for those new to track and field, what we do here at PV is purchase our uniforms. That way you have them throughout your years here, and we don't have to check them in and get someone else's used one every year.

TOPS:
For those that have been on the team in the past, our uniform is the same - we will be using the maroon top that we have used the last few years. For those that need to purchase one, the cost is $35 paid to the PVHS finance office. This is the top that ALL VARSITY RUNNERS MUST HAVE. Those who will be competing in JV meets are also encouraged to get this top.
JV athletes (and all Field Event Athletes) have the option of a variety of other tops as well. The grey tops are a great option for a little cheaper price. The grey tops cost $10 paid to the PVHS finance office. Some field athletes are more comfortable in a t-shirt style top and we have options for that also (but it must be a PV Track and Field shirt), just come and talk to Holt.

SHORTS:
The most important thing about our shorts is that they are ALL BLACK. Boys runners and Girl runners have the option of a spandex short or a runners short (OUR TEAM SHORT MUST BE WORN ON TOP of any other spandex or short). Field Event Athletes may purchase our team spandex/short or may go buy their own short, but it must be all black (no stripes, no logos other than a small brand logo, no other sports - like PV football - can be written on them).
Cost - Spandex (Boys or Girls) $25 / runners short (Boys or Girls)
$20 (updated)

MISC:
We also have a bargain bin of a few old (but new) things (including shirts and shorts) that runners can purchase by coming to Holt's room.
