Week of April 30 - May 5 and Cedar Invite & Tiger Trials

We want to thank all of you (athletes and parents) for all that you have each done to make this such a great year.  It really has been one of the most memorable we have ever had.  Great kids, great attitudes, great effort, great performances, and on and on.  Thanks again.  This week will see the end of our JV season (except those competing at Varsity Region), our final Youth meet, as well as our trip to Herriman.

Here's a little recap of the last week:
Cedar Invite: About 1/2 the team headed to Cedar this weekend for the Cedar Invite.  PR's were tough to come by in the very windy conditions.  Some highlights were Brizbin's PR in the Shot and SB in the disc; Cooper and Tanner PR'ing in the 3200; Josh H., Preston, Teuila and Maddy PR'ing and Kobe's SB in the LJ; Boston's PR in the 400; Doug's and Makana's PR's in the jav;  Carter's PR in the 1600; and Sarah's PR in the 100.  Also, Gracie, Jenna, Pyper and Jenessa all placed in the top 8 in the 3200.

Orem Invite: The other 1/2 of the team went up north to Orem for the Tiger Trials.  For a smaller squad, we had a great showing.  Alli started us off with a 5th place finish in the 1600.  Jake State Qualified breaking 16 for the first time in his 110's and took 2nd in the 300's.  Dylan set a new PR for a 2nd place finish in the jav.  Celeste also set a big new PR in the jav for the win.  The girls medley relay of NeNe, Kathya, Alli, and Jacey won and got the State Qualifier.  Raymond put a great shot and took 5th.  Nick had a tremendous PR in the disc to take 2nd and State Qualify. And the boys 4x400 fought the wind to get a State Qualifier.

Athletes of the Week: Get your nominations in (via text or email).

Schedule for the Week:
Monday - regular practice schedule with a team meeting in the PVHS lecture hall.  (Distance runners check your schedule, it is a little different)
Tuesday - JV Region at CVHS.  HS out at 1:00 and MS out at 1:10.  Everyone needs to see the important info below, but for those not competing at Varsity Region or Herriman, this is your final meet of the season.  Let's get out there and end the season on a fantastic note! Schedule of events.
Wednesday - regular practice and our final Youth Meet (please plan on staying and helping).
Thursday  - regular practice schedule.
Friday & Saturday - Herriman Invite at HHS.  Here is a link to the schedule.  (Note the entry for for spectators.)  This is a Varsity meet where we will only take invited qualifiers.  Bus/Release Schedule: Everyone traveling with the team will be excused all Friday.  We will leave from the HS at 8:15a.  The meet is on Friday and then we will stay overnight and head home Saturday morning.  A full itinerary will be sent home with the athletes who are invited to make the trip early in the week.

NOTE TO ALL ATHLETES AND PARENTS: As your season comes to an end (either with JV Region or Herriman) we still need all of your help.  First, we need your help at the Youth Meet on Wednesday.  Secondly, AND SO IMPORTANT, we need your help at Region on May 9th and 10th.  All PV Track and Field athletes are expected to attend and help at the Region Championships.  We would love you to continue to practice with the team until then if you would like, or not.  But we need you to attend Region and help staff the meet (The staffing assignments will be made at next week's Monday afternoon team meeting - everyone please plan on attending).  Thirdly, we will have a team ice cream party and awards night after Region and want everyone to attend.  More info will be coming out about that.

Thought of the Week: "Beginning well is a momentary thing; finishing well is a lifelong thing." - Ravi Zacharias
You know... everyone can start something.  It takes a very special person to actually finish it.  Let's finish this season well, and let's all take the lessons we have learned from this season and put them into our lives and keep striving to be the very best person each of us can be.

A little XC Info - For those interested in XC next fall, we will have a MANDATORY PARENT/ATHLETE MEETING Thursday, May 3rd, at 7:00pm in the Lecture Hall at PVHS.  It is very important that a parent and the athlete attend.  We will discuss many important things for the upcoming season.  This is for all incoming 9th-12th graders.  Please spread the word. (We will also be looking for XC athletes who can go down to the middle school to help recruit on Tuesday? morning, so check your schedule).

Week of April 23 - 28 and Hurricane JV & Dixie Invite Recap

We are getting near the end... can you believe it?  The progress we have seen from most of you has been a lot of fun to be a part of.  Let's make these last few weeks great.  This week we will split our squad between the Cedar Invite on Fri-Sat and the Orem Invite on Sat. (info below).

Hurricane JV: We had a very strong showing at the JV meet in Hurricane this past week.  Both the boys and girls teams placed 2nd with many scoring finishers and new PR's (in fact we had over 70 new PR's set at Hurricane!).  We had so many, it would take pages to mention them all... so take a look at the full results here and find a teammate to congratulate on a great meet.

Dixie Invite: Great job to all those who participated at the Dixie Invite.  Full results are here.  We had many great performances.  Celeste won the jav with a new PR and the #2 mark in Utah this year at 124'.  Samson made finals in 3 events culminating in a new PR in the 400.  Jessica hit a State Qualifier in the 3200.  We had 3 guys in the finals of the LJ (Michael, Colin, and Dallin).  And we got to watch Alli set two new school records with a 5:06 in the 1600 and 2:15 in the 800!  And mixed in there were many other PR's and finals performances.  It was a great weekend of track and field for PV.

Athletes of the Week: Get your nominations in (via text or email).  We will present them at the team meeting on Monday.  Let's get some nominees for the great performances at Hurricane and Dixie and the examples of great attitudes and leadership we see everyday.

Top Performance Chart: Here is the most recent update.  A lot of great marks and improvements on here this week.  Check out Insta or Twitter (@pvxctrack) for our Top 5 performances all-time at PVHS (we've got a few this year getting close).

Schedule for the Week:
Monday - regular practice schedule with a team meeting in the PVHS lecture hall.  (Distance runners remember your long run at 5:30a - wear white/bright)
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday  - regular practice schedule.
Friday & Saturday -
(CEDAR INVITE ATHLETES): Cedar Invite at CHS.  Here is a link to the schedule.  This is a Varsity meet with 6 athletes allowed per event.  We will get as many athletes in as possible.  Bus/Release Schedule: On Friday, HS'ers will be out at 1:00 and MS'ers will be out at 1:10.  The meet starts at 3:00.  On Saturday, the bus will leave from the HS at 7:15.  All athletes must ride the bus to the meet to compete.
(OREM INVITE ATHLETES):  Friday we will be leaving the HS after lunch (MS students will be released at 11:45).  We will then travel to Orem where will practice and stay overnight.  The meet is all on Saturday.  Here is the meet schedule.  A full itinerary will be sent home with the athletes who are selected to make the trip to Orem early in the week.

Thought of the Week: "Comparison is the thief of joy." - Teddy Roosevelt
What an awesome thought.  We see so many of you progressing and doing great things; yet, sometimes there isn't as much joy as there should be.  The biggest reason... you've compared yourself to someone else, yourself at a different time, who you think you should be, etc.  It is important to let all that go and just do your best... and HAVE FUN DOING IT!

And a little side thought: Get your grades up... There are a lot grades that need to be improved out there... get yours taken care of.

A little XC Info - High Altitude Camp will be held our usual dates during the last week of July-first week of August (July 30-Aug 2) and we will be going to Pine Lake (up near Bryce Canyon).  We will also have a preseason parent and athlete meeting during the first part of May - an announcement will be made for everyone interested to be in attendance.

Week of April 16 - 20 & Panther Relays and Desert Hills Recap

Another week, another huge leap for PV Track and Field!  To say we are excited about all that is happening is an understatement.  This past week, we had dozens of PR's and SB's, we grabbed more Herriman Qualifiers and State Qualifiers and even saw two school records fall!  And we even hosted a viral video...
A great time was had by all at the Panther Relays.  We were able to relax a little and have some fun, while getting a great workout in.  We did push for two school records at meet.  The boys 4x800 came up just a little short; however the girls of Alli Baker, Jada Chepkwurui, Rylee Holt, and Jacey Finch posted a 9:51 setting the record by 5 seconds.
At the DH Invite, we fought through windy conditions on Friday to get many people to finals and finished well enough on Saturday to have the boys place 3rd and the girls place 4th.  We'll list out some top finishers and marks, but we must say, our favorite part of the meet was seeing the team rally around teammates - especially as we cheered on Claire in the HJ and all gathered to watch Dylan and Jakobe in the jar finals!  The meet started with Alex posting a SB in the 1600 and placing 3rd.  The girls medley team just missed on a SQ, but hit a top 10 time in the state to take 2nd.  The girls 3200 was a very strong event for us as Ellie PR'ed and placed 8th, Jessica took 6th, Rylee got a State Qualifier (5th), and so did Alli as she placed 3rd and set a new SCHOOL RECORD with an 11:07.36!  (We want to take a second and interrupt to just mention the unique awesomeness we are seeing right now - Alli is ranked in the top 3 for Utah Freshman in the 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 - she is the only girl ranked that high in three events let alone four... she is the best Freshman track athlete in the state of Utah without a doubt!).  In the boys 3200, we had numerous PR's including Mikey's 8th place and Logan's 6th place finishes.  The 110 hurdles had Jake placing 4th.  Samson placed 6th in the 100.  The boys 4x100 took 8th.  Jada made finals in the 400, however she was pulled to focus on her 800.  In the guys 400, Macen placed 6th and Samson took home the win.  Brianna took 7th in the 300h.  And on the boys side, Jake placed another excellent time in placing 2nd.  In a very competitive 800, Jada took 5th and Jacey narrowly missed her SQ in taking 3rd.  Alex was also just off the SQ in his 2nd place finish in the boys 800; Evan had a PR race and placed 7th.  We had two girls 4x400 teams battling it out, one sneaked in the 8th position.  While the boys 4x4 pushed to a 2nd place finish.  In a thrilling boys Jav final, Jakobe place 5th with a nice PR and Dylan hit his SQ and took 3rd with a PR.  Colin was able to take 7th in the LJ on a very busy weekend for him.  And Gina placed 8th in the Shot.  And finally, in her first High Jump ever, Claire not only took 2nd, but State Qualified!  Great job everyone.  Full results here.

Hey, guess what?... we have a busy week coming up!  We will have the Hurricane JV Meet on Tuesday, host a Youth meet on Wednesday, and go to the Dixie Invite on Friday and Saturday.  Here's the schedule for the week:
Monday - regular practice schedule (including most distance runners with an early morning long run).  Team meeting at 3:10 (after warm ups!) in the lecture hall.
Tuesday - JV Meet at Hurricane: start time has switched to 3:00.  MS'ers will be out at 1:30, and HS'ers will be out at 1:35.  Be thinking about what events you would like to compete in at this meet; entries are due Monday.  Meet Schedule (remember, start time has been moved to 3:00)
Wednesday - Youth Meet (K-8th) 3:50 - 6:00.  Please plan on being there to help with the meet after a short practice.  (Some distance runners will have an earlier practice to get their workout in - look at distance schedule.)
Thursday - regular practice schedule.
Friday and Saturday - Dixie Invite at DHS.  Unless there are changes (watch for texts for adjustments), HS will be out at 1:35 and MS out at 1:45 on Friday (the bus will come to both schools).  And on Saturday, we will leave from the HS at 7:45. Meet Schedule (go to the link and click "schedule" on the upper middle of the page.

As usual, athletes must ride the bus to participate and we highly encourage you to stay around and support the team even if you are being signed out by a parent.  Like we already said, one of the best things this past week, was having a big group out supporting our teammates as the meet was coming to an end.  No matter what some people say, TRACK IS A TEAM SPORT!  And those that understand that are feeling the energy of their teammates and understand that this is a special year we are having... let's keep that energy growing.

Thought for the week: "Great things... are never done by one person.  They're done by a team of people."  - Steve Jobs

A quick thought on this... Brooks has put together some formula to measure the "Best Team" in the nation.  By this they mean top athletes, JV athletes, the improvement athletes are having throughout the season, etc... It is a true measure of a full TRACK TEAM... Everyone on a team.  And right now, the boys are ranked #3 in Utah and the girls are ranked #2!  This is exactly what it is all about.  We are a team where everyone can contribute and be a part of something much bigger than self.  Thank you, all of you, for everything you do for each other.  Let's recognize some of these great contributors/supporters by getting your Athlete of the Week nominees in.  You can look at these rankings on our athletic.net page.

Week of April 9 - 14 & Hurricane Invite Recap

Another great week for the Panthers! We encourage all of you to take a minute and think about the progress you've made this season so far... think about how far you have come and how far the team has come.  We hope you are as excited as us to see this growth!  Those that are putting effort in are seeing great improvements and the team is really starting to come together.

Hurricane Invite: One of our best meets in years.  Many of you really stepped up and were hitting SB's (season bests), PR's, scoring points, and even State Qualifying.  We saw some big strides from the distance crew as they grabbed points in every event, including some big sweeps.  The girls 1600 went 1-3 with Jacey, Jessica, and Rylee.  Logan (3rd), Alex (5th), and Julien (7th) picked up points in the boys 1600.  Alli State Qualified in the prelims of the 400 and went in as the 2nd seed (although she was pulled from the final to focus on her 800). The boys and girls 3200's swept the top 4 spots (Jessica 1st, Jacey 2nd, Alli 3rd, Elli 4th and Alex 1st, Logan 2nd, Julien 3rd, Mikey 4th and also Nathan 7th).  Jake's PR took 3rd in the 110h's. He also State Qualified (really!) with the win in the 300h's.  Samson PR'ed to take 2nd in the 400, and his wind legal final in the 200 State Qualified and placed 3rd.  Jada hit a SB to take 5th in the 800.  And Alli State Qualified and won her first 800 of the year.  And on the boys' side of the 800, Evan PR'ed and took 6th.  And many of our relay teams came together to place well and score points.  In the field events, Dylan placed 5th in the jav coming off of injury... and we also saw a big PR from Freshman Josh Bice.  Raymond placed 5th in the shot.  Celeste took 4th in first disc final of the season.  She also threw well in the jav and took 1st.  Also in the jav, Brynlee took 6th with a big PR.  Claire made finals in the shot for the first time this year and placed 7th.  Nick's 20 foot PR in the first throw of the disc final moved him all the way up to 5th.  Both Colin and Michael jumped just shy of the 20' mark to place 4th and 7th.  And in the team standings, the boys pulled out a 10 point victory over CV for our 2nd team win of the season, and the girls finished a very strong 2nd, 11.5 points off of Hurricane.
Overall, this was not one of our best meets of the year, it was one of our best in years.  Great things are happening at PV.  Check out the full Hurricane Invite results here.

Athletes of the Week: Get your nominations in (via text or email).  We will present them at the team meeting on Monday.  Let's get some nominees for the great performances at Hurricane (State Q's, top placers, big SB's and PR's) and the examples of great attitudes, leadership, and comaraderie that are taking this team to new levels.

Schedule for the Week:
Monday - regular practice schedule with a team meeting in the PVHS lecture hall.  (Distance runners remember your long run at 5:30a - wear white/bright)
Tuesday - PANTHER RELAYS: starts at 4:00, but come out at usual practice time to get set up (and throwers to get regular practice in).  All runners need to start considering which races you will be running (some will be suggested by the coaches, others you may choose; this meet is intended to be a hard practice, so everyone will run multiple events).
Wednesday & Thursday - regular practice schedule
Friday & Saturday -  Desert Hills Invite at DHHS.  Here is a link to the schedule (click "schedule" at the top of the page).  This is a Varsity meet with 6 athletes allowed per event.  We will get as many athletes in as possible.  Bus/Release Schedule: On Friday, HS'ers will be out at 1:35 and MS'ers will be out at 1:45.  The meet starts at 3:00.  On Saturday, the bus will leave from the HS at 7:45.  All athletes must ride the bus over to the meet to compete.
As a team, we really appreciate the effort that was put in to having athletes stay at the meet and cheer/support each other.  Let's continue to grow this commitment to each other.  So, we'll keep this announcement here for a little longer:
This next announcement is for the parents... please read... To leave the meet with a parent, athletes MUST be signed out with his/her parent.  Also, we are really trying to build our team atmosphere by having athletes stay until the end of the meet and cheer on their teammates.  If parents want to leave before the end of the meet, athletes should stay and ride the bus home with the team.  Also, athletes missing practice (unexcused, before the missed practice) will not be competing at the meet.

Thought of the Week: "A successful team is a group of many hands but of one mind." - annonymous
In so many ways, this team is coming together as one mind and one set of goals.  Each of you continue all the positive things you are doing to contribute to this, and reevaluate those things that detract from this and set your sights on where you want to help lead the team.

Week of April 2 - 7 and Cedar JV Recap

We hope you have all had a great weekend and are ready for a big push to the end of the year.  Thanks for making last week such a great one.  The JV meet was good and the Youth Meet went very well thanks to all your help.
Let's give a quick recap of a cold and windy Cedar JV Meet from last Tuesday.  Although the meet was shortened due to the cold and the length, we still had many great performances.  The distance crew started us well with Pyper and Addi going 1, 2 in the 1600.  We also a big PR from Kylee in her 1600 to take 7th!  Jose, Tavin, and Tyler all scored in the top 8 for the boys.  James looked good taking the win in the boys 110h.  In the girls 100, Brynlee recorded our fastest time of the season. The girls 400 saw Jada, Kathya, and Caroline all in the top 8.  And in the boys 400, Jaron and Josh both took top 8 honors.  Claire took 5th in her first 300h ever, and James placed 2nd in the guys race. In the 800 Pyper placed 2nd leading 5 Panthers in the top 8 including Sylvia, Gracie, Caroline, and Jenessa. Tavin, Tyler, Scottie placed in the top 8 for the boys.  In the field events, Brianna placed 7th in the LJ, Brynlee 5th in the Jav, Gina 2nd in the Shot, Dallin 3rd in the HJ, Mitch 2nd in the LJ (with a very solid PV debut of 17-10), followed by Kobe and Dallin in 5th and 6th, Colben placed 2nd and Jaron 6th in the Jav, and finally Nick set a new PR of 107 in the Disc to place 2nd.  Both teams placed solid 3rd's.

Athletes of the Week: Get your nominations in (via text or email).  We will present them before practice on Tuesday.  For those of you who weren't at the meet, maybe take a look through the results on runnercard or at athletic.net and nominate a teammate who is notable.

Schedule for the Week:
Monday - practice at 8:00a at PVHS unless noted otherwise by your event coach.  PLEASE BE THERE! Now is the time of the season when each of us can really start to see big improvements if we are putting the work in.
Tuesday - Thursday - regular practice schedule
Friday & Saturday -  Hurricane Invite at HHS.  Here is a link to the schedule (click "schedule" at the top of the page).  This is a Varsity meet with 6 athletes allowed per event.  We will get as many athletes in as possible - next week we will have the Panther Relays on Tuesday (April 10) where every athlete will get to compete). This next announcement is for the parents... please read... To leave the meet with a parent, athletes MUST be signed out with his/her parent.  Also, we are really trying to build our team atmosphere by having athletes stay until the end of the meet and cheer on their teammates.  If parents want to leave before the end of the meet, athletes should stay and ride the bus home with the teamAlso, athletes missing practice (unexcused, before the missed practice) will not be competing at the meet.

Thought of the Week: You may have caught this retweeted by @pvxctrack... "Constantly asking yourself, 'How am I feeling?' as if that is the most important question is a slippery slope because you end up focusing solely on those ineffective feeling.  Instead, decide who you want to be, then do what it takes to be that person, regardless of how you feel." - Justin Su'a
