Mar. 22-27 Panther Relays & SC Invite Recaps and PV Invite this week

Great to get our first competitions in this past week. Now we head into PV Invite week. We'll need lots of help with everything this week.

Athletes of the Week: Thanks to those who nominated teammates from the preseason (we will recognize them Monday). Now we need some nominees from this past week. Sprint, Field, and Distance; nominate your teammates who best exemplify our philosophy of hard work, commitment, and those who did great things this week. This recognition will come solely from your nominations, so we need them. Athlete of the Week form.

I guess one more week of these announcements, plus a few new things:
  • Those who haven't done the parent-athlete meeting (parents and athletes) need to please check out our Parent-Athlete Meeting slides. (This takes place of our having an in-person meeting, so please do it.) One of the slides includes a place for parents to help with the PV Invite; we need a lot of help, so please consider signing up!
  • Check out the spring schedule if you haven't yet.
  • PV Track & Field communications: If you aren't receiving our track text messages, text the code @trackprs2 to 81010 to be added to our list.
  • Spirit Pack - open again for one day only! This will close Monday night. It usually takes 3-4 weeks for the gear to get in (which is why we ordered early), but many weren't on the team. So take advantage and order any gear you want. Nothing in the spirit pack is required. Order at pvtrack21.itemorder.com
  • Drinks for PV Invite - guys and Senior and Junior girls we are asking that you get some gatorade/powerade for the meet. We need to get the 20oz size - an 8 pack at like Walmart is usually around $5. Freshman and Sophomore girls could you please bring in a pack of 16.9oz waters. Please bring these in by Thursday. Thanks!

Race Recaps:
Panther Relays - We had a great turnout on a cold opening meet. Some great races, throws, and jumps were recorded by our Panthers. And it was excellent to get the season going.

Snow Canyon Invite - A very solid start to the invite season. The boys placed 3rd overall and were the top 4A and Region 9 team. The girls placed a solid 7th. Scorers for the meet were Alli 3rd in the 1600 (and a State Q) and Adri in 5th. Boston hit a State Q in the 1600. Dom and Marcus hit a State Q in the 100 and went 1st and 2nd while Dom broke the school record and Marcus ran a would-be State record of 10.55w. Alli qualified for finals in the 400 - but was pulled to run her 800 which she won with another State Qualifying effort. Dom and Marcus also went 1st and 2nd in the 200 with State Qs. The girls 4x800 team of Kennis, Laney, Kate and Katie took 6th. The boys 4x800 of Ben, Gary, Grant and Allen took 5th. Brooklyn took 3rd in the 3200 and State Qed. Adri took 6th in the 3200. The boys 4x100 of Kemp, Marcus, Nick and Dom took 1st and earned a State Qualifier. The girls 4x200 took 7th. Boston took 3rd in the 800. Brylee placed 5th in the 200. And the girls and boys 4x400s took 5th. Maddie D. took 4th in the Long Jump. And finally, Josh took 3rd in the Javelin. Great job everyone... some great Personal Records (PRs), and some excellent efforts for the first meet of the season (or ever for many of you). It is fun to see where we stand at the beginning of the season and now set goals and a team and individually about where we want to get to.

Thought of the Week: This one is more of a meme that I saw. There was a picture with a sharpened pencil and a dull pencil next to each other and the caption said something like, "It's easy to look sharp when you don't do much."
That may be a little bit how we feel after our first race week. Despite having some great performances, I don't think we are anywhere near where we are going to be in a couple months. And some other competitors/teams may have looked very sharp. Well good for them. We don't know what they are doing. Maybe they have been doing a ton of work and are just awesome (we can't control that) or maybe they are feeling fresh and sharp because they have chilled a little (again, good for them... we can't control that). But one thing I know for sure is that we are working very hard and may be a bit like that dull pencil. We've been pushing in practice, working hard, maybe ran a full schedule of races, or whatever that has kind of worn us down. But we are getting the work done. And when the time comes later in the season, we'll be able to do great things because we have been putting in the work right now.

Alumni Update: We had one Panther compete this past week. Jessica Hill ran her first collegiate race, and her first race at all in a year, and she took 10th place in the 5000 for Weber State down at UNLV.
