April 11-16

Another great week. It is a lot of fun to see the improvement so many of you are making. Hard work, commitment, and consistency always pay off. This week, we have no meets and with the break for Easter, it is a great time to get some good workouts in and for those that are injured to get feeling better and back stronger than ever.

BYU Invite Info:
Here is the qualifying info for BYU Invite - BYU INFO. This year we are going to BYU instead of Sentinel so we can get on the track/facility that will be hosting State (very few of you have ever run there). To qualify for this meet, you must hit the required mark. However, another requirement is that we only have 25 entries. This means that even if you hit a mark, you are not guaranteed a spot at the meet. We will try our best to get everyone in a race who qualifies, but to ensure your spot keep pushing for improvements.

In the 200, Brynlee took 3rd and got her SQ, Arden and Jade took 6th and 7th. Abe took 4th in the boys race. Adri, Brook, and Katie took 3rd-5th in the 1600. The guys 4x400 took 1st to earn a SQ (Marcus, Diego, Trey, Turner). Tori and Rachel cleared 4'10" to place 4th and 6th in the hj. The throwers went big with Sawyer winning the jav; Peter, Galu, Payton, and TJ going 1, 2, 3, 7 in the shot; Galu, TJ, Payton, and Peter going 2, 4, 6, 7 in the disc; and Tea taking 4th in the shot. Rachel hit a nice PR in the lj to take 5th. Both teams ended the meet in 2nd place.

If you'd like to see how these performances stack up against various events and the last few years, take a look at the PV Performance Chart that uses a scale to rate performances across the different disciplines against each other.

Athletes of the Week:
Sprint -
Brianna (Sophomore) has worked her way back from a broken wrist suffered at the beginning of the season. During this whole time, she continued to come out and support her teammates by cheering at races and being at practice. It's great to have her back practicing and racing.
Nic (Senior) has been working very hard in his workouts and doing what he needs to help the team be the best it can. This week, Nic ran a PR 100 and helped the 4x100 SQ.
Field -
Chloe (Sophomore) is a tremendous teammate. She is always supporting and cheering on her team - especially her throws crew - while continuing to improve her own marks.
Payton (Senior) has really hit some great marks this week. He threw PRs in both his shot and disc. He is also always willing to step in and help coach up his teammates in positive ways.
Distance -
Talmage (Sophomore) ran a strong 800 PR and then came back just an hour later to run a 1600 without complaint. Although he was really worn out, he still pushed himself and tried his best.
Kate (Sophomore) ran a very strong 800 at Crimson. She is a super teammate who holds herself and others to the high standard it takes to be on the best girls distance crew in the state.

Thought of the Week: "When we lose, we experience a rise in cortisol leaving us apprehensive, anxious, and more likely to avoid instead of approaching the problem. The best performers move on quickly - learn from the loss, then refocus on the problem. They don't let it linger."
-Steve Magness
Not that there was a particular moment that brought this thought to mind, but all of us have experiences (races, tests, relationships) that don't go as well as we would like. The key to making yourself a better person is recognizing why there was a struggle, learn from it, and then refocus on doing better. When we dwell on the negative or just avoid it, we never truly move on and we never give ourselves a chance to improve and grow.

Check out the spring schedule if you haven't yet.

Youth Club Info: Our MS Developmental Track and Field Clinic is going strong. This group meets Monday and Thursday at 3:00a-4:15('ish) and is open to all PV students in 6th-8th grades. We will focus on each different track and field event and give athletes an opportunity to work with the coaches of each specialty to see what our middle school athletes may want to pursue. We will meet throughout the spring and participate and host multiple track meets. (meet schedule can be found by clicking schedule link in the above paragraph and scrolling through to the Youth schedule.)
